Olafur Arnalds' new series, Living Room Songs , is an accessible listen to classical that holds no pretence. Positively moving, the songs take ambient music to another scale. This is music that encourages deeper listening from its pure beauty. [...]

Max Richter — Horizon Variations From The Blue Notebooks ( FatCat ; 2004) "Listen to 'Horizon Variations' and you'll know there's a reason why scientists spend their lifetimes trying to understand a black hole" — Evan Goldfried's review of The Blue Notebooks for Cokemachineglow

German composer Max Richter is a firm Sunday favourite here at the Labs. From his work with FSOL to "The Blue Notebooks" and "Infra" , two pretty much flawless modern classical albums that show the genre at it's very best. He's also known for his soundtrack work and has kindly uploaded a smattering to his Soundcloud to provide some perfect Sunday listening. Enjoy.

As I'm sure you're all aware, tomorrow marks the dawning of the Rapture (6 P.M. Eastern Standard Time), in which believers will be whisked off to eternal salvation while the earth's tainted masses (see: atheists, mimes, music bloggers) will be sentenced to 5 months of pestilence, famine, and other vaguely unfavorable things. Because you'll need a kickin' rad soundtrack to spin while the locusts devour you whole, we've assembled Repent! , a mix of 17 songs steeped in that sweet End Times Flavor™. Enjoy, and pick up a t-shirt while you're at it. [...]
Fat Cat Records' classical imprint 130701 has been one of the premier outlets for contemporary composers over its decade-long history – an achievement marked by this Brighton Festival event. And for a label that has dedicated itself with an almost religious devotion to the modern-classical cause, where better to showcase their three current flagship artists than a church? Opening was US artist Dustin O'Halloran, whose string-laden piano tinkering has a certain starry sway but washes over all too easily. Performing cuts from his Lumiere album, he did enough to convey that he is [...]

Max Richter- The Haunted Ocean 5 (Solo Version) Max Richter-Vladamir's Blues I understand that this music seems a little unusual for apfos, but what's the harm in broadening our horizons? This piece of music is from the film 'Waltz With Bashir' , the film is equally as compelling as this music and I highly recommend it. There are 5 [...]

I can't quite remember how I first discovered Max Richter's work, but the first album I heard of his was "The Blue Notebooks" and despite listening to it repeatedly again and again over the past few years, it never fails to lose an ounce of it's magic. It's a truly beautiful piece of modern classical and if you don't own this then I highly recommend you head on over to Boomkat asap and pick up a copy. Last year saw a new album from Richter in "Infra" and at points it almost [...]

Yesterday, I found myself looking out my 9th floor work window, completely lost in the patterns of falling snow against the suddenly beautiful Lego-like building across the street. My mind discreetly checked into a room soundtracked by today's song, which belongs in the "sorta-but-not-quite-classical /swear-you-heard-it-in-a-film" files. Or in a planetarium. Or in a celestial waiting room. Max Richter - Iconography

![[Listen/Download] – New Mixtape By Memoryhouse – "Death To Our Friends"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3083438_lg.jpg)
I am a huge fan of this new practice by indie/rock artists of posting mixtapes for their fans to download. It provides a welcome insight into the tastes of artists that we typically only know via their own songs or, at most, via twitter feeds and myspace pages. In a sense, it personalizes the artists, revealing that, at heart, they are as much 'fans' as we are. The most recent mixtape to pique my interest came as a New Year's present from Memoryhouse , a band that had a very productive and underrated 2010. The name [...]

Max Richter - Infra As soon as everybody watched 'Inception', Hans Zimmer's accompanying soundtrack - so perfectly shaped for the visuals that met it halfway - was hailed as a triumph by many who hadn't even considered championing an instrumental, ambient collection of melodies before. And yet in amongst the many normal albums released over the year, there was a "soundtrack", if you will, that seemed to pass everybody by. Composer Max Richter initially constructed the pieces of 'infra' and 'journey' with the intention of applying the material to a [...]

This would have to be my favourite Max Richter release, straight off the bat you are treated to short, fleeting beauty in his focused classical flourishes and subtle electronic shortscapes. I love how every track is short, the longest being just 2:51 long. Each track gives you enough to hold on to but constantly lets you go, transporting you to the next wonderous moment this record has to offer.

50. Sonny and the Sunsets – Tomorrow is Alright 2010 was a good year for straight forward beach rock that drifted with carefree lyrics and concepts. Tomorrow is Alright took the genre into a more humorous and psychedelic direction and the results were quite rewarding. Just try listening to Planet of Women and not smiling, it's not possible. No, I'm not talking about Chopin or Beethoven, I'm talking about Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds , Peter Broderick, and Hauschka. Instead of old guys with wigs rocking out on a grand piano, these contemporary auteurs are known for pushing the beauty of contemporary classical into the current [...]
