Another late night mix, best to be listened to alone in a dark, void room filled with a stark silence. Five downbeat, meditative instrumental piano pieces. The first two is lingering, airy ambient. German-born composer Max Richter mixed piano and string arrangements to make a piece that deserves to be a movie score, and Craig Armstrong provides one that's already in a critically-acclaimed movie. To end the list is the Grammy-winning instrumental track from songstress Sarah McLachlan's landmark album in 1997. Enjoy. Eluvium - Prelude For Time Feelers (Copia, 2007) [...]

Max Richter: "Harmonium," from the Songs from Before LP (Fat Cat/130701, 2006)

Photo credit: omnia Mt Macedon Cemetery in Victoria, Australia is home to Peter Schipperheyn 's dramatic sculpture "Asleep". It is one of the most intriguing and beautiful contemporary works of art I've come across in recent years. The beautiful contradiction between the young women's vulnerability and the unsettling surroundings of the cemetery. The way her right hand lovingly grips the edge of the tombstone. It simply takes my breath away every time I look at it. The story goes that the artist was commissioned by a woman to make this sculpture [...]

Max Richter The Blue Notebook I played violin all four years of high school. During this time, we learned all about classical music, from the notation and how to play it, to the lives and music of composers themselves. Understandably, I took quite a liking to classical music and this led to my current love for any use of strings in contemporary songs like in Andrew Bird and Final Fantasy's case. I absolutely love it. I don't exactly remember how I stumbled upon Max Richter's The Blue Notebooks , [...]

For some reason, classical music was something that I never found myself particulary involved with. Sure, I don't mind songs from the likes of Beethoven to Tchaikovsky, but I find myself growing impatient with some of the material though I do think the genre will eventually grow like fine wine on me, with several songs already making an impact. Max Richter is considered a German composer, though I do not see his elements streching far from post-rock and electronica, with acts such as World's End Girlfriend or even early DJ Shadow being comparable to several songs. That isn't [...]
