Five years ago today, I started Fong Songs. I had moved to Vancouver for a two month stint taking a two month course in 2D animation and after happily reading other mp3 blogs figured "Hey, I can do that!" (isn't that how all blogs inevitably start). Now, full circle, I'm living in Vancouver semi-permanently and in less than a month I'll be going back to school for my master's degree. So yeah, the blog end is near, I face the final curtain, yada yada yada. I've done it my way, more or less. [...]
.......so how do I give up the fight after spending my life chasing my poetic schemes........... Max Vernon played an awesome new song "Walls" at his Joe's Pub debut in April. It was the only self-reflecting song of the night but one that has universal qualities for those that have dreams. There are two more lively videos of "Psycho Bitch" a song about a person whose music dreams are unobtainable for unforgettable reasons and "Girlfriend" and a gay twist on the love triangle. [...]

It was a night of firsts for musicians Max Vernon and Dan Fishback who are about a decade apart sharing the bill for their Joe's Pub debut. They have different music styles but both are clever songsters and have the Charm factor sewn up. Max Vernon rolled out a more poppy set then usual playing solo on the piano, guitar or keys and featuring the band in groupings or as a whole. It [...]

It's been a few months since we last checked in with Max Vernon. Here are two from his upcoming Silent Sirens EP and you'll notice musically he's going with a more electronic vibe, yet it's still unmistakably Max Vernon. I love his willingness to dabble in different genres and you gotta kinda hate that he's so über-talented that he pulls it off with no apparent effort! Not to mention he does his own surreal album art... Dig these: Max Vernon - Silent Sirens Max Vernon - Bound [...]

Enjoy this week's stellar performance of 'Psycho Bitch' in the feature below. MP3: Max Vernon - Wait & See

It's really too soon to call this song a guilty pleasure. Also, I don't love the song. I just kinda like it. I heard this song, and I liked it. Another reason it doesn't get a long salutation and discussion the way my guilty pleasures usually do is because I just haven't heard enough takes on the tune. Anyway, it is a pretty crappy pop song. And I do like it. So I am guilty. Three covers, individually and zipped, follow. Dig the covers? Know about others? Dig [...]
I thought I'd bring in the New Year with Glitter and Glam from the talented and stylish Max Vernon . This video selection is one of several songs from Max's set at the New York Antifolk Festival. I chose "All I Need" because I want you to see Vernon's yodeling finale. It is awesome! It is not often that bands/musicians get such quality footage. So wonderful that Alex Erde decided [...]

It's been almost a year since I interviewed NY musician Max Vernon, a first and last for Fong Songs, ha ha. I get really stressed out over things like that and it makes my blogging feel like work when it shouldn't. In spite of all the PR e-mails in my inbox, the simple fact is I don't even really want to interview most artists, but Max was a rare exception and when the opportunity came up I jumped at it. Anyway, you can go back and read it here . Since then, my enthusiasm for [...]

We've written about Max Vernon a bit before here and here on The Stu Reid Experiment. Recently, we got a chance to catch up with him about his past success, his upcoming projects, and what he counts among his influences. Check it out! You burst onto the scene with a synthy cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl' that got a lot of press in the blogosphere – was the success you had with that track completely unexpected? Pretty much! I [...]

Early on in this here Experiment, I posted up a cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl," that ubiquitous Summer 2k8 tune. Hard to believe that it's been over a year since that all went down. Yeesh. Anywho, the cover was by a dude named Max Vernon - he threw some synths in, focused on piano, and turned the questionable lyrics into a gender-bending romp. I still dig it. But it was easy to dismiss Vernon as a one-trick pony. "I Kissed A Girl" was begging for a cover of that ilk. [...]
