So, Maxïmo Park have been away for a little while, and whilst their third album didn't do huge business, their first two records still stand up as a perfect example of how great some of the indie rock in the mid-'00s actually was. A few weeks ago, myself and the wonderful Chris Scott had the chance to catch up with frontman Paul Smith (the bowler hat guy, not the stripey Nottingham designer), who opened up about the Newcastle music scene, the difficult second album and what the band have been up to following Smith's solo album. [...]
The Eversons are highlights in the fusion of past and present that is art-punk, a genre most recently propelled by names like Art Brut and The Rakes. Both groups debuted in 2005 with a thickly accented, spontaneously wry vocal wit backed by tremolo-heavy riffs and mechanical rhythms in a style akin to bands like Gang [...]

It's the second day of Bingley Music Live '11 , the first of two paying days, but at £35 for the Saturday and Sunday, no one's really complaining. It's a far cry from neighbouring Leeds Festival as the 15,000 descend back on Myrtle Park, Bingley, readying themselves for a day of sunshine and music. Due to the excess amount of people arriving in the area, trains are pushed to their limit on the arrivals front and as such, my first train of two for the day was delayed and I managed [...]

Maximo Park "Signal & Sign"
The Stanley Blacks are a no-gimmicks indie rock band from the UK. Fitting into such a category is presently a tricky maneuver, as many of their counterparts are shrugged off in favor of over-produced, industrial sounds. But the four-piece have stayed true to the purest of music, even if their new album - which is [...]
![[Introducing] – Saints Of Valory](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3551460_lg.jpg)
Tweet Austin based four-piece Saints of Valory are a band with a sound much bigger than their reputation. I don't think it's too bold to say that these guys are just a few savvy PR moves and a hit single away from breakout success. "Cover Girl (acoustic)" , a snappy, hand clap driven number that measures short of 3 minutes, could be that single. The lyrics risk coming off as corny - "My heart's like a target and now she [...]
Five years ago on this date, Grant McLennan died in his sleep from a heart attack at the age of just 48. Along with Robert Forster, he shared songwriting and vocal duties in the brilliant but unappreciated Australian band The Go-Betweens. I've always put the pair up there with popular music's most celebrated writing partnership: [...]

Think of North East music and which artists come to mind? Maximo Park? The Futureheads? Kubichek? All good artists in their own right, yet there's an underlying feeling with all of them, that when it came to jumping the final hurdle and shooting themselves towards the festival headlining slots, they all hit the proverbial stumbling block. After earlier this week meeting up with the new troubadours of North East music, Athletes In Paris, it's clear these guys are determined not to slip up anywhere alone their way to stardom. From their electric live performances, to their rock and roll swagger, [...]

On Further Review : Albums of Note by Nick Parker solo album from Maximo Park's Paul Smith: FROM THE UK - One of the amazing things for me about listening to new music is that feeling of slight bewilderment as you try [...]
Photo: PJ Sykes I was intrigued by Lubec because they recorded their debut EP on a tobacco farm. Now, I don't know about you, but I find that to be pretty freaking awesome. Even more awesome, though, are the tunes found on the EP. Lubec's music is, according to them, what would be considered as "sculpt-rock". I'm not exactly sure what that means, but what I do know is that they are making some awfully catchy and addicting tunes. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, the 4-piece is gearing up to release that EP, "Nothing Is Enough!", on [...]

Who doesn't love Wire? One could make the case that without these guys it would have made for a quite barren indie scene in England the last decade. No blueprint for the likes of Bloc Party, Maximo Park or Franz Ferdinand to take notes from. We would have been left with more open mouth frothing over the White Stripes and the Fillers, to name a couple of time wasters. Wire, you see, were the real deal. From the classic (and I do mean classic) debut record, 1977's Pink Flag to the forthcoming opus Red Barked Tree , [...]

Subject of a recent CoS Where We Live feature, Bush Hall provided an admirable platform for Maximo Park's Paul Smith to air his solo work, encapsulated in the October release of Margins. There is nothing that marginal about tonight however. The snow currently paralysing much of the transport network outside London has reduced a sold-out gig to around three-quarters full, if that. The heavily coated and booted crowd though make up in warmth what they lack in numbers and there seem to be so many people here from North East England that it feels [...]

Shots from the launch party for his solo debut, Margins .

Formed out of the remnants of This Ain't Vegas , Coal Train rise form the ashes as a rock infused indie-pop four piece from Sunderland . Known primarily, or at least in musical terms, as being the city that produced The Futureheads , Coal Train have produced a sound that is entirely, and wonderfully, different from their home town counterparts. ' Building Dens ' saw Coal Train 's first furore into the realm of released music under their new guise, gaining a great deal of attention from many bloggers and [...]
