Maximum Joy were one of the splinter groups of The Pop Group, the 80's Post-Punk-Funk pioneers, and damn do their tunes still have more life than ever. Running similar lines were 23 Skidoo, also of the UK, who were not only working the original Industrial music lines, but incorporating elements of funk through it. This tune was actually 'supposedly' sampled by/inspired The Chemical Brothers in their classic tune 'Block Rockin Beats'. A little deviation from the norm here. Maximum Joy were a short lived group of Bristonians that produced only a handful of EPs and one album between 1979 and 1982. Despite their limited output, the band typified the post-punk sound of the early eighties. Although disbanding before this blogger was even born, their sound is as fresh as ever. Today, I could imagine DFA picking them up in a snap. Enjoy: In The Air Stretch (Disco/Rap)

I'm listening to them practice as I type. Sounding great! MP3 Super [...]
We wanted to include Unlimited (1979-1983) , the collection of rarities by the skronky Pop Group offshoot Maximum Joy, in our Jackin' Pop reissues ballot, but alas--it was put out by the folks at Crippled Dick Hot Wax late last year. A pity, because when we pulled it out of our stacks for our year-end review, it made us move and shake all over again--especially the unbridled ebuillence of "Stretch" and the minimal cool of "Silent Street." Something for the Weekend: The Pop Group "She is Beyond Good and Evil"
Of all the band's to ever announce a reunion, the Pop Group are possibly the last name I ever expected to see on a billing any time soon; however a reunion of sorts is what is happening. Four dates - two in Italy and two in London - have been posted and these will be rare opportunities to Mark Stewart and his gaggle of post-punk / abstract jazz / dub / noise merchants in the flesh. The Pop Group

Maximum Joy - All Wrapped Up!
I've always had a fondness for the jazz/post-punk scene that arose in Bristol at the start of the '80s. Several bands grew from the dissonant ashes of the Glaxo Babies and The Pop Group. Doklands favourites Rip Rig & Panic had some small success, and Pigbag produced the anthemic Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag . Much in the same vein were Maximum Joy. Here's a track from their debut album, the 1982 release Station MXJY , with production from the then-ubiquitous Adrian Sherwood. All Wrapped Up! is a spiky, [...]
