Tomorrow night, Tuesday the 6th of September in London, the winner of the 2011 Mercury Prize will be crowned. I've asked each of our writers to choose which album they think should win this year's honour, as well as which album they think was criminally absent from the 2011 shortlist. And without further adieu... Mary Chang , Editor (hometown/current location: Washington, DC, USA) Who should win: Everything Everything - 'Man Alive' (Geffen). To be honest, I was [...]

This was released MONTHS ago, and I listened to it from the end of school up until this very moment. The reason why it took so long to post is because I lost my laptop for a little bit and it escaped me that I never actually put this review up. If you want a detailed analysis, read on. If you just want to cut to the chase, kicked the shit out of their last one, tied with their first one. For me, I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone was a sign [...]

Maybeshewill are an instrumental band from Leicester, UK formed by guitarists Robin Southby and John Helps while the pair were studying together at university in 2005. Apparently the band have a new album that just released on May 30th, namely "I was here for a moment, then I was gone", but today's featured track "Co-Conspirators" is taken from their last release in late 2009 called "Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony". Maybeshewill have a large upcoming gig at the 2000 Trees Festival of 2011 at the Upcote Farm in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire with Frightened Rabbit, Los Campesinos!, [...]
Even though we're unapologetic fanboys of earthtone9, we'll still admit that it was with some trepidation that we headed down to Highbury to catch the final date of the band's first full tour since we broke the news of their reformation in May last year. It's been a fair few years since earthtone9 were among the [...]

I have tried to write this up twice now, and both times Tumblr crashed when I got around halfway through the review. Tumblr is obviously having trouble handling this album, and I'm not surprised. If any other band had made 'I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone', people would be wondering whether it would be possible for them to better it. With Maybeshewill , however, the question is rather different: 'If they were to make a better album than this, how would they go about it?' You see, the trick is in the approach. [...]

2011 looks set to be the finest year for post-rock in recent memory. Jeniferever first set the bar with 'Silesia'; Vessels then raised it considerably with the astonishing 'Helioscope'. The highly-anticipated third record from Leicester's finest looks set to be just as good, if not better. The wheels have started to turn for its release, and the timing of the appearance of 'Critical Distance' could not be better-timed. A more straight-forward track than we're used to hearing from them, the direct approach works exceptionally well, and the result is their most immediate song yet, one that definitely ranks among [...]
About 2 years ago I introduced instrumental aficionados Maybeshewill . Time has passed but my feelings have stayed the same on the Leicester four piece. The band recently finished recording their new album last week, which is currently being mixed. In the intermin, they've made "Critical Distance" available, which will hopefully be featured on it. If you like Explosions In The Sky , Mogwai or anything remotely resembling those bands, you'll definitely dig this. Share [...]

Remember the best nights you ever had: your first kiss, the night you spent with your mate in his basement with a whole container of mulled cider. This, my friends, is the soundtrack to every night you've spent chilling. Dark Dark Horse is the side project of Maybeshewill's Jamie Ward and singer James Stafford from Kids in Cars. Honestly, this stuff is pretty intense. My friends and I are secret electronic indie pop fans, so when we get our hands on something this good, it doesn't go away for long. What separates this band from many others is [...]

Maybeshewill updated fans today on the newest happenings for the upcoming year. First, they announced a follow-up to 20102s "To The Skies From a Hillside", entitled "Critical Distance". It's projected release is March 7th, 2011, and will feature an acoustic recording of 'I'm In Awe, Amadeus!' Second, Maybeshewill announced that they will be cordially leaving Field Records, which they released 3 albums and 2 splits on, and will join the Function Records team, who's members include Cats and Cats and Cats and Shield Your Eyes. Third, they explained the deal with their 3rd album: [...]

Earlier on this week my friend Callum asked me to compile him a "shoegaze" type mixtape that he could play at a gig that he is hosting. Just something that could act as a noise filler before, between and after the bands have played. I was undecided about whether or not to make it an hour and a half or 2 hours so instead settled for the standard 1 hour and 18 minutes to allow the mix to be transferred to CD if needed. When it came to [...]
![As I Watch You From Afar- The Letters [2010]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3000218_lg.jpg)
I stumbled across this band while reading up on Maybeshewill. They had toured together at one point, so I decided to give their latest EP, The Letters , a listen. So I didn't give an unbalanced view of their work, I listened to their whole discography before I wrote this, so I've been running on AIWYFA for the past couple of hours now. What I can tell you is that their old music is very original, cowbells, stamping, and at what point sounded like Gregorian monk chants. This new EP doesn't seems to dive into anything new, however. Whereas [...]

What do electronic beats, male choirs and the movie Network all have in common? All are featured by arguably one of the best post-rock bands since 2000, Maybeshewill. All the way from the United Kingdom, Maybeshewill created a new post-rock sound all their own. It all began with their first major release in 2008, Not For Want of Trying , which ranged between the heavy riffs in "We Call For An Ambulance But A Fire Engine Came" to a lighter, almost emo-esque "Heartflusters". The most surprising and beautiful sounding piece from this album [...]
I've decided i'm keeping with the Halloween theme until it arrives so for the rest of the week there'll be posts assosciated with Halloween type stuff. It was the Phantoms turn yesterday so today it's time to open up the old "do you believe in them or not?" debate.... I had fun searching through my hard drive for "ghostly" songs. I had a lot more than i thought i would've. I picked a select few and tried to keep the musical styles as varied as possible. [...]

This will be my last post for a few days because as of tomorrow i'm off to Newcastle for the weekend. I'm due back in Glasgow at sometime on the Sunday night and then i'm off to see Maybeshewill play at Stereo this Monday night. So i've got a busy few days ahead. I was due to go see Crocodiles play this Saturday in The Captains Rest. I bought my ticket ages ago, way before the Newcastle trip had been arranged. Obviously i won't be able to make it [...]
From: Leicester Sounds Like: The power of post-hardcore (minus the angst), mixed with a natural talent for songwriting. Remember when bands did that? Website: Maybeshewill.net and Myspace.com/maybeshewont Thrash Hits verdict: More DIY than your local branch of B&Q, the intricacies of Maybeshewill prove that you don't just need Big Fuck-Off Guitar Riffs to make it [...]
