April is here and, as of yesterday, spring is fully upon us in here in the Nation's capital. Let's ignore today's depressing rainy weather and pretend like this came out yesterday, when the Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom, the sun was out, and temperatures jumped into the 80s. I broke out the flip flops and shorts to class, and it was that time of year when you beg your professors to let you have class outside, even though they know it will lead to a complete lack of productivity. This time of year triggers a change in [...]

7 songs guaranteed to make you get out of your seat and jiggle a little - if you're me anyway. seriously, if i was djing in the pub at atp in camber sands i'd be playing all of these songs. the room might be empty but i'd be having a brilliant time. ::: fool's gold - nadine ::: guillemots - trains to brazil ::: miracle fortress - whirrs ::: mazarin - chasing the girl ::: vampire weekend - horchata ::: akron/family - [...]
The Twin Atlas - The Ever Present Seriously spacious jam from this New Jersey duo who just know how to take it easy. This is highly pleasant music: smooth and well-played, with a vibe that's part treble-y '70s AM rock, part Yo La Tengo slow jam with Californian vocal harmonies up to HERE. The total obsession at the moment with coating everything in a layer of noise means I'm getting pretty close to total lo-fi fatigue, so it's good to hear The Twin Atlas administering the raggedness sparingly, a la Kurt Vile. Not that [...]
>>We love this song. This performance by The Hold Steady of "Constructive Summer" was shot on a rooftop under a setting sun and presumably in the band's hometown, Brooklyn. The rendition in the clip, posted here to Pitchfork.TV Monday, is a little sleepier than the hard-hitting recording that opens the band's recently issued Stay Positive . But the band seems to enjoy giving "Constructive Summer" a more leisurely workout, and even a lighter pace can't dull how wonderful this track is. >> After Brooklyn-based hardcore foursome Report Suspicious Activity issued its [...]

For those of you not up to date with Beach Boys news, founding members Mike Love [the Wilson brothers' cousin] and Al Jardine [the Brian Wilson's friend] have been involved in a lawsuit for years over who has the right to tour under the name "The Beach Boys." Love argued that he held the license to use the name and wanted the money Jardine made from touring as "The Beach Boys." They settled the lawsuit on Friday but no details were given as to who gets to use [...]

Something in the air ... here or there , we're already there ... road to nowhere . image via wooster collective

I have not posted a mix since July last year, can you believe it? I barely could, even though procrastination is something I am quite skilled at. That is not a good thing, but better late than never. Enjoy the free songs, you slackers. You should try something more productive, like playing chess on a logride. You've probably never even thought about trying that, you were busy slacking so much. British Sea Power - Waving Flags - (MP3, 5.7 MB) This is a damned good song by a band I'd written [...]

W hile we were away for awhile from the Festival City Radio studio, I made a " secret " episode ( 95.5 ) just for you. It's really cool - man, that's a stupid pun. I'm sorry. tracklist: Love and Rockets-Suadade Housemartins-I Smell Winter Mi & L'au-Philosopher The Cure-The Upstairs Room Mazarin-NE Winter The National-Cold Fever Girl [...]
Black Stoltzfus, formerly known as Mazarin, will be opening up for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on a handful of tour dates starting next week. The shows will be in the northeast part of the U.S. so if your in that area you really should check out the show. Black Stoltzfus is the temporary band name for "Mazarin", who released an absolutely killer album titled "We're Already There" back in 2005-2006. Unfortunately an old 70's bar band sued Mazarin for the the rights to the band's name. Rather than spend money on court costs, Quentin Stoltzfus and [...]

Last year, I did quite the birthday post . I was pretty depressed at the time and I found myself thinking a lot about getting older, lost chances, and regret in general. This year I don't find myself quite as down, but at the same time I don't feel inspired to turn my psyche inside out contemplating life, either. Don't get me wrong. I mean, I'm grateful that I'm not nearly as sad as I was a year ago. That's worth writing [...]

I was recently watching the newest Puma spots that are getting serious airtime on multiple stations, and I thought to myself, "where have I heard that song before?", so I did some researching. Then it hit me: All four 15 second commercials feature the catchy, quality track "For Energy Infinite" by Mazarin, who sadly recently called it quits . Then it hit me again: I had seen Mazarin perform the song live when they opened for The Walkmen at 9:30 in DC way back last June. Then it hit me yet again: I had downloaded their 2005 effort, [...]
If you haven't been keeping up , The Reacharound is a fairly new IGIF feature in which we take a look back at some bands from 2006 and beyond that you all totally shouldn't forget about. This week's reacharound takes us back to 2005 (oh so long ago, indeed), when pop-art-rockers Mazarin released their third album entitled We're Already There . It's a surprise that We're Already There didn't latch on to a stronger crowd. Unlike many noteworthy albums that fail to catch on because of failures in [...]

Okay, I'm a bit skitterish about this one, so please bear with me. Back in early December, I went group-by-group, song-by-song through a long list of artists I found at the 2006 South-by-Southwest festival website . I sampled every song I didn't already know and prepared my own list of the ones I liked best, old friends and new. For various reasons totally uninteresting even to myself I've just never posted a big bloc of the songs, some of which are by some of my favorite current artists. Soooooo, I'm simply [...]

Apollo Sunshine has a new record coming out in `07. And no I don't have any songs off of it. However, the guys from Apollo Sunshine ( here ) did help the Philly band Mazarin record their last ever song "Your Advice" (a cover of a Blood Feathers song). I'm not sure who's doing what on this song but clearly Apollo Sunshine has brought some of their Beach Boys meets Big Star charm to the table. Your Advice Bonus Mazarin tunes: [...]
Alex and I guest hosted "The Neighborhood" radio show on Newton's WZBC radio station on Wednesday. We were on with our good friend Dave from 10am-noon, then 1pm-3pm. It was a good time, we helped picked out some music and enjoyed some new tunes as well. I've included a few mp3s of songs we played on the show, but you can check out the whole playlist here and here . MP3: Mazarin - The New American Apathy ( buy ) I first heard this song when Apollo Sunshine covered it at [...]

A few days ago Mazarin, a great indie-pop collective from Philly, were legally bullied into retiring their band name. Apparently an obscure (and stubborn) Long Island group shared the same name and released music before the Philly boys did. The final solution , from the band's site: In short, MAZARIN A and their attorney decided: either cease and desist, or we go to court. Considering MAZARIN B had no disposable income to fight the case, plus information had come to light revealing that one of the members of MAZARIN A was [...]
Well this is certainly sad news. This has already made the rounds in numerous places but I wanted to post about it just because I had just recently started to listen to the band myself. I was introduced to them through Andy when he played one of their tracks on his radio show a couple of weeks ago. It's disheartening to discover something new than find out that they are disbanding due to sad legal developments over a band name dispute. Apparently indie-rock Mazarin , led [...]

Can you guess which Mazarin is known as "those slaves to rock and roll"? So, Dodge posted Tuesday about Mazarin calling it quits, which upset me because I really dug into the group's last LP, We're Already There . Turns out, the band is actually being forced to change its name becaue of a cease and desist order by an attorney hired by another band called Mazarin , "often referred to as 'Long Island musical legends' " (by whom I don't know). This from The Good Mazarin's Web site, wherein [...]
