Hi kids. Sorry if you're getting the sense I'm not putting much effort in this week. I'm trying to move and it's proved a tad bit difficult without the proper…um…large vehicle that can drive a mile up the street while holding large pieces of furniture. So I'm taking baby steps to bring all my little [...]

Tweet It can be a noisy, crowded place here on the cutting edge of music (yes, this is the cutting edge - thanks for asking). All these young dudes and debauched débutantes clamouring for attention, filled with youthful vigour and shrink-wrapped in impossibly skinny jeans. Their cups o'erfloweth with drive and ambition and a burning desperation to be the Next Big Thing. It can all get a bit overwhelming - a little like my prose. There is, though, a rare breed of new bands who have [...]
Our dreampop collective Still Corners has officially released there visual for the first single "Cuckoo." Debut Lp " Creatures Of An Hour " will see daylight on October 10th. Enjoy the video above.
Mazzy Star's 1990 track 'Blue Flower' gets made over by Brooklyn indie rock legend Frankie Rose.

I'm a little envious of the august arrival. Not only do they live in Canada (and really, who doesn't want to hail from the same country as the Kids in the Hall gang?), but they still have full-time jobs, families, children, and time on the side to be in a band. Seriously, just think of the random conversations you could have with strangers: Stranger : Hey, so, what do you like to do for fun? You : Oh, you know, the usual. Since having my son/daughter, he/she really takes up a lot [...]

Frankie Rose & The Outs - Blue Flower [Mazzy Star] | zs

I was just speaking the merits of Mazzy Star's Black Sessions the other day and here comes along Widowspeak to recapitulate that golden voice of the 90s. Pigeonholing the band is not my intention though, as their songwriting ability is clearly evident in the A-side of their newest 7-inch, Gunshy . The band solidifies the song of the same name with strolling guitar influenced by Link Wray and many-a-Ennio Morocone soundtracked movie. Get lost in this song and stay cool. Currently the band has an LP and a single out on Captured Tracks . [...]

Lanterns On The Lake [...]

EMA isn't the only female fronted artist of low fidelity making waves in 2011. The Dum Dum Girls will be releasing a sophomore effort, Only In Dreams, in September of this year. Self described by front lady Dee Dee Penny (Kristen Grunded) as a slow burn, the first track is a heart on the sleeve confession booth covered in ringing guitars reminiscent of Mazzy Star . The closest they will get to WNY is a short trip down the QEW to Lee's Palace in Toronto, [...]

Here we are... I am thirty years old. A few days after the fact but still celebrating. I can't really believe it, where did the last 15 years go? I remember learning how to drive, my dad taking me to the CSULB empty parking lot. When I hit a parking space line he would say, "You just hit a car!" I would laugh. I think these life milestones can really fuck with one's head. I NEVER thought I would still be finishing school, unmarried, no kids and in career I never took any college classes for, [...]

It's official, 2011 seems to be the year to return to Mazzy Star . Following suit is the first track, "Coming Down" from the Dum Dum Girls upcoming release Only In Dreams -a swelling song about heartbreak. After their phenomenal EP released earlier this year, the girls maintain the filled out production, while Dee Dee's vocals continue to reach new levels of beauty. Perhaps everything I want to say about the track, Dee Dee says best herself- "I won't lie; it's heart on sleeve. [...]
Ceremony, Burning Hearts, and Memory Tapes are three different artists with very different sounds. Their influences certainly intersect though, allowing the material to sound like creative odes rather than blend replications of genres and movements that are now in the past. They encompass a wide range of styles - from glam-inspired post-punk to flamboyant dance-pop - and remain interesting in the process.
The Dum Dum Girls just dropped this cover of "Fade Into You" this morning and we're loving it. Seriously, "Coming Down" is great and a big step up for the band. The section just after the midpoint of the song, where the instrumental comes up out of the second chorus, is really moving. Nice work, ladies! Dum Dum Girls - Coming Down Dum Dum Girls ( Official ) ( Twitter ) Rating 8.4

Mazzy Star only saw brief success, but their sophomore album So Tonight That I Might See solidified them in pop music thanks to the out of nowhere hit song "Fade Into You." Led by guitarist David Roback and vocalist Hope Sandoval, the album's opener became their quintessential song, trapping listeners in a dense atmosphere with ear piercing slide guitar and melancholy lyrics. If you're feeling lazy and dreading the work week restarting tomorrow, get lost in this comma-inducing masterpiece. With every listen, a beautiful dream begins.

Tweet Talk about serendipity - actual serendipity, not the stain on John Cusack's career. Having just been talking with Frank about The Veils , and how awesome they are, and how more people should like them, I discovered that one half of new band Straylings is ex-Veils guitarist Oli Drake. Which is to say, it's not surprising that they're great. The other half is Bahraini/Austrian Dana Zeera. She moved to the UK a couple of years ago, having grown up listening to the [...]
Pittsburgh-based duo Ennui tout the shimmering guitar riffs, glossy reverb, and meekly pastoral vocals of many dream-pop acts, but labeling them singularly as a dream-pop group isn't fully conclusive. Elements of alternative-rock, specifically the ambitious electronic-minded sort that emerged in the late '90s, are as equally prevalent in their music. Some of their efforts, like [...]

"Black Eye" By Love Inks. In many ways Texan trio Love Inks' debut album ' ESP' is the complete antithesis of much of today's fast food, battery farmed pop. Unlike those hyperactive, homogeneous big label 'stars' who rely on heavy handed high tech production trickery to obfuscate their glaringly obvious lack of talent, Love Inks have no truck with such deceit. They have stripped down their music to its most elemental, thereby ensuring the emotional purity of their work is preserved and not lost in a hellish vortex of [...]
You know that really shitty weather we've been experiencing in Columbus for the last couple of months? True Widow's self-described stonegaze is the perfect soundtrack; dark, grey, gloomy, like the rain-filled clouds that have been perpetually hanging low in the Ohio skies. That's not to say True Widow's latest (a friggin' mouthful!), As High As the Highest Heavens and From the Center to the Circumference of the Earth , is shitty like the weather. No, my plodding doom metal friends, this album is far from it and is one of the most haunting [...]
