Here's one of my favorite tracks by Common entitled The Food , featuring Kanye West. The track consists of two samples from two tracks that if it wasn't for this song, would never come up in the same sentence. The first is a 1962 love ballad by Sam Cooke called Nothing Can Change This Love . You can hear the sampled piano notes on both Common's track and Cooke's track throughout pretty much the whole song, from start to end. The second sample is actually not really a sample by definition because it wasn't actually [...]

Download covers by cult rapper Buck 65 of Leonard Cohen, Kraftwerk, Tom Waits, Bronski Beat, Roxy Music, and MC Shan!

I was feeling nostalgic for some old school battle raps when I woke up this morning and have been listening to diss records for the last few hours now. There have been so many legendary songs birthed from feuding MCs, and even though battle rapping is one of the key elements to the essence of hip-hop, artists now a days have shied away from stepping to each other and the battle rap seems to be a dead practice. Some will argue that Lil Wayne's recent jab at Jay-Z may prompt a squabble between the two, but to me, it just [...]

Biz Markie - Just a Friend Yo so my second post which is kind of running with a theme from the first is obviously Biz Markie. Legendary rapper, beatboxer, DJ and at times TV personality. Biz Markie's career began in Long Island, New York in the early 1980s, where he established his reputation for beat-boxing and rapping. MC Shan and Roxanne Shante were part of Marley Marl's Cold Chillin' Records, and Biz beatboxed on Shante's underground hit "Def Fresh Crew" (1986). This lent credibility to his recording career and put Cold Chillin' on the map. In [...]

Juice Crew - The Symphony Well to kick off my first post running drop on a classic I racked my brains trying to think of what mind blowing bits of sampling greatness should I put forward, this proved to be hard as i was just over thinking the whole thing . So I've just gone with tracks that I love to listen to when I'm kickin old skool and I hope you will enjoying learning about as the 'Drop on a Classic' journey continues. So the Juice Crew brain child of legendary producer Marley Marl and [...]

Thanks to Buck 652s Twitter , it came to my attention that it was Marley Marl's birthday last week. Buck went on to opine that Shan's Born To Be Wild was Marley's best work, and he posted a link to I Pioneered This to back up his opinion. I wouldn't dispute that too much, as I've always liked Shan, and his first two albums are pretty awesome, but I've always been amazed that Marley isn't recognized more for producing LL's Mama Said Knock You Out , which literally resurrected Uncle L's [...]

"Painting pictures on my wall/every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic , Marly Marl." Everyone knows that classic line from Biggie's "Juicy" and if the late great Notorious B.I.G. looked up to him, he had to be special. The hip-hop world is mourning the passing of one of its early trendsetters and pioneers, DJ Mr. Magic , who succumbed early today from a heart attack, according to All HipHop. The New York native, born John Rivas, was not only an early fixture on New York City radio, but also helped to found one of the culture's most [...]

What's up? I've been away for like a minute-more like two months. I was knocked out of commission for a while taking care of some business. And damn, did I miss a lot of music this summer. Like Rock the Bells and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival. As well as Rock the Bells and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival. I spent the last few days cleaning up the blog, chopping weeds and kicking out the homeless, Giuliani style! But I'm back, and I'm bringing it back with the dude who'????s trying to bring hip-hop back. Back from what, I'????m not sure. [...]
The second in our weekly series about old skool hip hop. Shane's away, so I am taking credit for 50% of this post, but hopefully he'd be ok with my choice of Special Ed. mp3:: MC Shan - Kill That Noise Considering I posted a BDP song in last week's inaugural edition of Old School Mondays, and I wrote a long-winded review of KRS & Marley Marl's new album, there's been a lot of KRS talk on the hill recently. And there certainly should be, Ack and I both enjoy KRS, [...]
