So we left the MC5, one of the most politically extreme, wild and outrageously loud bands of all time, in mid 1970 (see ABON 0185 ), having been dumped by the label that had released their landmark live debut album, with their manager in jail, being constantly harassed by the police, labelled by the FBI as the most dangerous band ever to roam the Earth, struggling manfully to capture their raw live sound in the studio and consigned by Atlantic, their new label, to record their next album with debutant producer and man who would soon announce that 'I've [...]
The MC5 at their peak were the probably the most genuinely threatening of the American Proto-Punk/Garage bands of the late 60s and early 70s. The Velvet Underground could tell disturbing stories, sometimes even based on real life experiences, but Lou Reed's stories were always that - wonderfully told, detached, stories. The Stooges' main man, Iggy, was an onstage, dangerously out of control, force of nature, but his self-abusive live performances were always more disturbing spectacle than threat to the audience. In fact Iggy's audiences in the early days were often more threatening than what was [...]

is some of these guys. Ladies & gentlemen: THE MC5

...And we want to be free to kick out the jams It used to be that there was nothing more American than beer, bar-b-ques, Air Conditioners, TVs, car washes, and rock music. You could always count on things that were made proudly in the good ole' U.S.A. We know where this went. However, the one thing though that will always remain true is on this very short playlist is american made rock-n-roll until they figure out how to outsource that shit. Ok with the exception of the U2 track you know what I am getting [...]

When it comes to the MC5 I’m always ready to testify about any of their albums. If someone asks me which one is my favorite it takes a lot less than 5 seconds of decision. Kick Out The Jams rules and Back In The USA is great, too but High Time is IT. Always has been, always will. The MC5 are a prime example of what happens when very talented individuals combine forces and record collections in order to break thru the terminal stasis of boredom, classification and mediocrity. This [...]

DOWNLOAD : Hollis Brown - "Doghouse Blues" NYC quartet Hollis Brown has been playing around town for the last three-four years but I've never had an opportunity to hear what they sound like prior to receiving a copy of the band's forthcoming EP "When The Weather's Warm". A number of reviews that I've read over the last few years have compared Hollis Brown to The Black Crowes (which I don't hear at all) but I would suggest a better comparison is the bastard child of John Fogerty and [...]
If ever the world needed a definition for "kick-arse rock 'n' roll", then here it is. Born in mid-60's Michigan, MC5 - along with the Velvet Underground and others - punctured a decade that was slowly descending into slow, soft rock hell. By fusing soul with an uncompromising blues ethic, MC5 beat the shit out of many listeners that happened to be sat within several feet of a large, loud

Here's your morning wake up call. Ugly, ugly people gonna drop the bomb! Play loud and watch the cattle die.

I hate that you can spend so much time listening to music and still miss so many great bands that are out there. The flip side of that is great, though: there's always a new opportunity to find something you love. A group or artist from any era or genre can catch your ear and you're a new fan. And that's nothing to be sad about. I was recently introduced to The Ettes. They've been around since 2006 and, while I was completely oblivious, released three great albums. I'm going back through their catalog now and loving the garage-y [...]

photography by purpleplaid Baby Please Don’t Go is a song that was originally recorded by Big Joe Williams (what a voice man!) way back in 1935. I’ve heard various versions before (oddly not the mainstream ones) and thought it would be great to share some of them. These are just the covers that I think are cool either because I like the sound of it or because of the unique take on it. I’ve also tried to keep it in order of release (more or less). I have about 3 [...]

When Sufjan Stevens's new album Age of Adz hit the web, apart from the auto-tune section in "Impossible Soul", the most talked thing about the album was the multiple F-bomb drops in the song "I Want To Be Well". Rewind a couple months back and Cee-Lo's delightful anthem "F*** You" was making waves for it's incessant usage of the word. So, inspired by the recent upswing of F-bombin', I've made a mix of my favorite songs using the notorious word (with the lyric in question highlighted below). Let me know some of your favorites in the f***ing comments. [...]
