Jake was talking about seeing Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Against Me!, and Future of the Left in Omaha. I'm seeing the same crew in Denver. So Future of the Left gets one to thinking about mclusky (and the other band who gave members to Future of the Left: Jarcrew). mclusky was an epic band of amazing noise rock proportions. First, here is Future of the Left . Good band, excited to see them live. mclusky, they're not. But mclusky is a hard one to touch, in my opinion. If you're looking for a good time, though, read Future [...]

More great indie posts from my old site, these from 2008, so the links are more likely to work. Again, you can see them in their original content here . TULSA-"I Was Submerged" (EP) Tulsa announces their first release with the indie label Park the Van, an all-too-brief (about a half-hour) EP of indie rock and roll for fans of American Analog Set, My Morning Jacket, or Centro-Matic. Highlight, "I Feel Great" has an amazing (and long) instrumental opening that feels somewhat jazzy—kind of like the old, rambling Grateful Dead [...]

When it comes to discovering a new band, there are various ways to separate yourself from the pack and make others take notice. One of the easiest way is to cover a song by a more popular band. But doing so can be kinda tricky. There's already a high level of expectation and if you don't pull it off, you are just deemed lame. When it comes to covering a Mclusky song - it seems nearly an impossibly task. For those that knew and loved the Cardiff band can seen how that could be a pretty [...]

In honour of St. David's Day today, my weekly mix will be strictly Welsh. Those who know me know that I have a fairly bizarre obsession with Wales - I'm not remotely Welsh in origin. I explained my affinity for the Welsh in a blog I wrote last year: Yes, my favourite band is the Manic Street Preachers, who are Welsh and sing about many a thing Welsh, and perhaps they were the ones to raise my awareness of Welsh politics, history and culture, but they raised my awareness of many other more general things. There [...]

Ah where do I start with this one? Okay I'll keep it sort. Last night Fight Like Apes absolutely destroyed Whelans. Taking to the stage dressed up in matching black outfits and ninja headbands, it was obvious that this wasn't gonna be your average gig for them. This was gonna be the gig that would announce to Dublin that the apes have landed. And holy fuck, but they rocked. It was a balls-out scream at the stage affair for a well lubricated audience who knew a disturbing amount of this semi-fledgling band's lyrics. A few thoughts struck me. One, this [...]

Another installment of Essential Records comes from the Welsh band McLusky . This 2004 record produced by mr. Steve Albini finds its place somewhere between Nirvana, Modest Mouse and something much much noisier. I personally love the humor (check out the X wing reference in "Mint") and the sound of this record. Check out some tracks below: McLusky - She Will Only Bring you Happiness (funniest line: "our old singer is a sex criminal") McLusky - Icarus Schmicarus [...]

And on the seventh day, your lord (that's me!) rested. It was a much needed rest, considering the week both began and ended with heavy alcohol consumption. Come to think of it, the flow of booze was fairly consistent this week. And all the while, Sari and Nicci (at least I think...) have not been totally put off by my debauchery yet. Those girls are real troopers! They even laugh at my jokes, sometimes! I think love them. As for Ilya...he's used to me by now. Now here's the music. RULES for uninitiated noobs [...]

New York slayed me in the best possible way. I had only seen a few parts of it before on a trip in 2003 to the Grammy Awards (I saw mostly the tall buildings of the Financial District, the neon Times Square area, and Madison Square Garden) so I missed out on so much of its character before this past weekend. My friend's boyfriend James is a walking New York history book, like even better than those headsets they give you at Alcatraz. Spurred by a childhood interest in Spiderman and other superheroes from NYC, he soaked up just about [...]

Hope Is Noise Genre: Rock / Alternative / Punk From: Cork, Ireland Cork's noise merchants Hope is Noise were originally formed in 2002 as The New Messiahs (which was a great name). However a dose of bad luck in 2005, when they lost their practice room and 7,000 euros worth of equipment in a fire, prompted the name change and they haven't [...]
Song: Beginning from the End Artist: The Bellrays Album: Have a Little Faith Comments: I can't truthfully say that I have been subjected to the rhythmic island sounds I allude to in this post, but I am back from vacation with a hunger for something not Top 40 or derivative of Top 40. I love this song from Lisa and the boys that are the Bellrays. I don't like the jazzy intro, but it kicks into high gear pretty quickly. Great punk tinged rock. I don't [...]
Klasse Idee. The man in the moon.Melancholisch, aufgedreht, abgedreht was weiß ich. Viel Spass damit: Marianne Faithful - The mystery of love mclusky - to hell with good intentions Noir Désir - Des visages des figures [...]
В черно-белом утомительном спокойствии на короткую минуту случается бунт: нервы героя Бениньи сдают и он начинает повторять смешную фразу « I scream-o, you scream-o, we scream-o for ice cream-o! ». Сокамерники подхватывают, и через полминуты уже по всей колонии разносится дружный ор — отличная разрядка для тягучей джармушевой меланхолии. [...]

Beginning today, Idolator will spotlight unjustly ignored B-sides, bonus tracks, and EP cuts for a segment titled "On The Flippty-Flop." Send your suggestions to tips@idolator.com . ARTIST : McLusky SONG: "Undress For Success," 2003 FIRST APPEARANCE: Undress For Success EP WHY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN A-SIDE : Welsh scream-rock trio McLusky only managed three studio albums before flaming out in 2005, but they left behind no shortage of raging sing-alongs. "Undress For Success" is from a stopgap, but [...]
It's friday! Friday = The Rock. Especially because on this friday I have bought tickets for Dinosaur Jr in London. Oh yes. Tonight's mp3 helping is a session from everyone's favourite Welsh rock band of the last 5 years or so, the much much missed Mclusky. Peel had been a big backer of the band, and three of their songs appeared on the annual Festive Fifty from 2002-2004. This was the bands third and last session for Peel, and was recorded on the 6th May 2004. She Come In Pieces is taken from their 2000 [...]

There are a lot of up front protestations to be made before presenting an all-time top whatever list. If the list isn't particularly gender-neutral (mine includes exactly one female vocalist), the writer is required to employ some disclaimer to the effect that s/he likes plenty of female artists, it's just that, you know, the world of rock 'n roll has been historically male dominated, so it's natural for a list to contain so many male acts. If the list doesn't include enough genres (mine features exactly one album that couldn't be called pop or rock), the [...]

*MP3's are up now, so make sure you get 'em while they're hot. * Hell yeah! I finally got my Mcluskyism last week, and I've been listening to it a lot. For those who don't know: It's a three disc-compilation by the band Mclusky from Wales. It includea a-sides, b-sides, c-sides (plus some live-stuff) and it's the better than any compilation ANY band ever could release. Quick rundown on Mclusky (from the little I've heard/can remember): They've always been a [...]
