The latest record from Velapene Screen (Chris Ghiraldi) is an LP that doesn't disappoint. Velapene keeps his sound as rad as ever, staying true to his charming, catchy melodies and exquisitely programmed beats. Not only do you get lots of gifts from Ghiraldi throughout, there are a number of remixes by artists including Meat Beat Manifesto, Kero, Duran Duran Duran and Sense. Three personal favorites by Velapene on the release include "Big Sand," "Fins and Legs" and "What If They Can't Trust You." Favorite remix on the record goes to Sense's "Breathe Again (Sense's In, [...]
The Official Lost Turntable Guide to Ripping Vinyl is coming! It might be a few weeks though, whenever I get going on it I find myself rambling for a bit before I focus. Look for it next week I hope. But you know what you can look for right now? My new blog! I've been doing this blog for about six years now (holy shit!) and while I'm going to keep doing it for as long as I can, I find its format rather limiting sometimes. Recently, I've become fascinated with bands so obscure that I [...]

MUSIC REVIEW: Ambient music for movies about ghosts and televisions that could eat you. Lowland's The Void samples some tv, has some meandering guitar and low beats. I picture a pretty desolated cityscape with dim lights and nobody on the streets then the people are there suddenly; translucently floating by you. They are really just people's left over auras from years gone by. Impressions in your imagination from the back of your eye socket. Then they are gone again like a blip or a blue screen of death (oh the bitter irony in this statement) [...]

Some uncompromising dance music from Jack Dangers. Originally from the UK, he re-located to the West Coast USA in the mid-90s. Weatherall remix ahoy! Their name a grotesque reference to masturbation, London, England's Meat Beat Manifesto are a post-industrial dance music outfit comprising multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jack Dangers and programmer Jonny Stephens, aided by non-musical contributors Marcus Adams (dancer and choreographer) and Craig Morrison (stage and costume design). Taking their theme as the modern information/consumer society, the band combines samples drawn from television and commercials with hip-hop beats [...]

Globo were oddball UK dance act on Hydrogen Dukebox. Both band and label could be hit and miss but when they got it right, they got it very right. Sampling a police interview for a single isn't the mark of the faint-hearted. The sampladelic act Globo released their debut album, This Time It's Globo..., on Hydrogen Dukebox in May 2000, though not before a questionably-sourced police interview sample on their 1995 single, "13," attracted a lawsuit and delayed its release. Globo used parts of an interrogation for white label releases of [...]

In this birthday week, two more Weatherall mixes from 1990 - West India Company and Meat Beat Manifesto. West India Company was a curious mix of diverse characters containing as it did Asha Bhosle (famous Indian singer), Neil Arthur (ex-Blancmange), Pandit Dinesh, Peter Culshaw, Stephen Luscombe (ex-Blancmange) and Vince Clarke (Erasure). Having already incorporated Indian music with Blancmange's new wave pop, keyboardist Stephen Luscombe delved into it further with the West India Company. As with Blancmange, the West India Company combined keyboard-heavy club rhythms with Indian instrumentation. The biggest difference were [...]
Even Music Non-Stop robots like us, who seemingly never tire, have to unplug and recharge ye olde batteries from tyme to tyme. There's only so much dance-orientated music one can handle before the need to slow the BPMs down becomes apparent. True, it's great listening to bangers while you race to and from work or when you're out on the town, but you can't keep up the pace indefinitely. Sometimes it's necessary to just CTFD. Luckily, a co-conspirator from across the pond has provided just such the antidote for decompressing from some of the stress of modern life. [...]
An important notice I'm suddenly very popular. I know this because I got my first legal notice today. The offending post has been removed by Blogger and I'm worried now that more might face their wrath. Because of this my blog will moving to greener pastures very soon. I don't know exactly where yet, I'm probably just going to finally bite the bullet and set up LostTurntable.com since I do own the domain name. Should my blog vanish without a trace I would head there for updates. More information (including who the [...]
Today at work I listened to one of my all time favorite electronic music albums, Subliminal Sandwich by Meat Beat Manifesto. A double disc set released in 1996 - the heat of the "electronica" moment - it is big and sprawling. Dub bass lines and reggae toasting rub against gritty electro beats and nightmarish sonic sample mash ups. Big rumbling break beats clatter around post-apocalyptic

ANDREW WEATHERALL DELIVERS 2 EXCLUSIVE DJ MIXES Andrew Weatherall gave us these two exclusive DJ mixes as a gift, k? There are for you only! We will throw the most insane party on February 12th in Berlin at Tresor Club - where it ALL started! to me this is important as Andrew's mix of guitar music and beats back then in the early 90ties created RAVE in Manchester. Who knows where we all would have been without his mixes for Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, That Petrol Emotion, Jah Wobble, James, The Grid, New [...]
Here are some videos I shot at the Brainwaves Festival. Strategy - Awesome Piano II ( unreleased ) There's a couple of seconds that got clipped from the end, but you get the general idea. Meat Beat Manifesto - Return To Bass (from Autoimmune )
I always seem to have absolutely no ability to manage my time effectively. It's 2:35am and here I am just beginning this post. I'm not going to waste any time with words. This is going to be short and to the point. Oh but one last thing. I'm feeling 90% better than I felt last week. It's all good in da hood. Song: Miss Misery Artist: Elliot Smith Album: Soundtrack to Good Will Hunting Comments: Man could this dude whine. Listening to him makes me think that I wouldn't have been friends with him. Consolidated were an industrial band, highly politicised who were influenced in the early 1990s by the sounds coming from Europe. They worked with Jack Dangers (Meat Beat Manifesto) who moved to the US from the UK in that period and added his crunchy beats to their guitars. Consolidated were Adam Sherburne, Mark Pistel and Philip Steir. But they didn't sell terribly well and ended up being better received in the UK and Europe, probably the politics was too much for a US audience. Consolidated was formed in 1988 and was best known in the early [...]

The Unabombers are releasing the third volume of their 'Electric Chair - Saved My Life' compilation series in mid October. Celebrating 13 years of their now legendary defunct club in Manchester, the 'Electric Chair R.I.P EP.' gathers together three eclectic tunes which defined the sound at The Chair. Tracks include the Paradise Garage anthem ' Stand on the Word' by the Joubert Singers . 'Black Men United' by Shut Up And Dance and my personal favourite ' Like Some Dream (I Can't Stop Dreaming)' by Daniel Wang [...]
