After showing a picture of the "missus" to the camera, Davecat comments that "[he does not] see why that is strange because other people carry pictures of their loved ones in their wallet". In any other circumstance this statement would go unnoticed, however it is hard not to raise an eyebrow when you see who the love of his life is. Davecat is a self-proclaimed "idolator", which means that he is infatuated with life-like dolls. The "missus" in the photo is none other than his RealDoll named Sidore. While RealDolls are commonly associated with sexual [...]

Baltimore - Honestly. If I were in Toronto, you lot would be reading reviews to kingdom-come in the coming week. Alas I am not. Still, driven by an insatiable thirst for movies/documentaries, I will tell you what caught my eyes in this year's listing at Hotdocs while sitting miles (oops, I mean kilometers) away from Toronto. You probably knew what Hotdocs (Canadian International Documentary Festival) is - but did you know that Hotdocs.ca lags behind an automated document generating company in Utah when it comes to Google search? I have noticed this for a few years now... perhaps we should [...]

It was inevitable, I suppose. When we started this blog way back in 2007, Rihanna was just another rising star in the pop world, a Barbadian teenage beauty queen with a sweet backstory and her first multichart number one single just starting to get coverage. But ignoring the 23 year old superstar gets harder every year. Her continued work as a performer of hits, and as a collaborator with other rap and pop stars of no small stature, is readily admired by fans for its power, and for the confidence she brings [...]

Now we live in the ages of the Internet, it is not uncommon to become completely bored by experimental and ambient indie pop from singer-songwriters. Many are busy rattling through their computer software to make the eeriest of tones and its becoming to feel a little soulless. Read more..

Transgressive A mere couple of weeks after the success of a Bon Iver cover died down, a youngster with a piano who calls herself Birdy is moving on to take on another indie-credible band, this time The xx. Perhaps it wasn't her decision. Most likely, the record company doesn't trust her to write her own songs and is desperate to build on the ground already made, as quick as possible. Fortunately, someone, somewhere, trusted Lauren Doss to do her own thing. Some of us will remember her initial spell of success, emerging [...]

'Friday Films' ( noun ): a freaking fantastic weekly blog post containing videos of London acts that SOIWT likes And this is poised to be the womens-lib edition: Kyla La Grange - Been Better Here's the second single from ever-more-hotly-tipped-act (is-that-some-kind-of-hyphenat ion-record-?) Kyla. Much more sultry and subdued than Walk Through Walls, it still comes with a bouncy beat, and thus demands more tapping from that poor, beleaguered toe of yours. Details of some Kyla live dates in my Spectator Arts blog . [There is [...]

It's been quite a few months since I last saw Smoke Fairies so I notice not so much a difference as a transformation. Now that they have a band backing them, the fuller sound suits their songs. In 'Strange Moon Rising' not only are their guitars resonating eerily in the foreground but the band are creating hazy soundscapes in which haints are almost visibly appearing. They've always written a spooky sort of pop but now the cello's sepulcral drones evoke real tension, in the same way that Bernard Herrmann's arrangements underline the danger in [...]

Lauren Doss is Mechanical Bride and with her debut album, 'Living with Ants', she may well step up to a new level of singer/songwriter status. But such an elevation is more to do with the easy meander offered by her record – rather than it being necessarily an indispensable piece of work. The slow, lilting songs – which are predominantly led by the deep, sombre piano – have subtle melodies and warm arrangements – perfect for those seeking a cool new piece of background music. Her quirky kooky nature heard in tracks like the playful, 'Walk into the Forest', might even [...]

25-year-old self-taught he-singer-writer the MECHANICAL BRIDE unleashes his pretty haunting new COLOUR OF FIRE video. wotyougot
Colour Of Fire' is off Mechanical Bride's debut album, Living With Ants , available this June. http://www.mechanical-bride.co m/

Birdland Return!! "Everybody's Dreaming" – Birdland. It seems Birdland are back!! In the late eighties Birdland burst on to the scene looking somewhat like a ' Midwitch Cuckoo' version of the Ramones or The Stooges replete with a frenzied, amphetamine fuelled sound. They were quickly called the next big thing by the music press, alas timing is everything and the decision to delay their debut album meant that they failed to take advantage of [...]

Mechanical Bride has released the video for her new single 'Colour of Fire' which is the first track to be taken from her debut album
Mechanical Bride is Lauren Doss, and 'Colour of Fire' is the lead single off her forthcoming debut 'Living with Ants' (on Transgressive) - due out in June. The haunting imagery pieced together in the video were shot in Berlin including the same building Polanski used for his film 'The Pianist'.

She seems innocently youthful, fresh-faced...'sweet' even, upon first impression. But pretty soon Lauren Doss (aka Mechanical Bride ) is talking of her passions and travels in a way that exudes a nonchalant cool. We meet in a quaint Mediterranean cafe; outside, the sun is slowly descending and the early evening heat gets a little cooler – if it wasn't for the view of the Gherkin down the road, I could almost pretend we weren't in London. Lauren is about to play in Dalston Boys' Club, a venue she assures me holds a hell [...]

Mechanical Bride , AKA 25 year old songwriter and self-taught musician Lauren Doss, made quiet but confident waves back in 2008 with her debut release, a collection of beautiful songs called Part II: EPs . She's gained her critical acclaim as an exciting and talented new British songwriter, being offered comparisons to the likes of PJ Harvey, Bat For Lashes and Laura Marling. Now back with the release of her debut album Living With Ants , Doss is set for big things. [...]

We've been handed a pair of tickets for Mechanical Bride's upcoming show at Dalston Boy's Club on April the 19th and have to find them a home by Friday!

As much as I don't like doing these kind of generic posts there is a lot of stuff I want to get out there, so just for once this seems to be the simplest way of covering all bases. I have just got word that Benjamin Francis Leftwich is set to release his first single proper on the 6th June entitled 'Box Of Stones'. It will precede the debut album slated for later in the month Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm , both dropping on the indie [...]
