This may be a little preemptive, but I'm sure we all know the world is due to end in 2012. Saturday night may very well be the last New Year's Eve any of us celebrate. With that in mind, I'd thought we'd all enjoy a good party song, with an appropriate title for the occasion: Medeski, Martin, and Wood's "End of the World Party" of their 2004 End of the World Party (Just In Case). I briefly mentioned MMW in my entry on Jimmy Smith. While Jimmy Smith's influence on any Hammond B3 player cannot be underestimated, John [...]

It's Friday! We hate Rebecca Black for ruining that phrase for us.

Going to a concert can often seem like an event to dress up for, or be seen at, but sometimes the right show can just be that simple excuse you need to nod your head, shake your hips, and hear musicians play instruments live, loud and fast. Jam bands are the perfect answer to this kind of equation, as there are often many instruments and beats to get you groovin'. Antibalas is one such band, boasting twelve members and all of the horns, drums, bass, guitar and funkiness you can handle. After they properly fired up [...]

Just the facts, man // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… On September 13, quirky funk-rock act Primus will release Green Naugahyde , their first album of new material since 1999 via ATO Records and Prawn Songs. Featuring the band's 1988 lineup of Les Claypool (bass/vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums), the album was produced and engineered by Claypool himself at his Rancho Relaxo studio. This fall the band will head out for a month-long tour [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , All About Jazz Liz Penta Jazz bands have their own kind of dynamic. Usually there is a band leader who writes all or most of the tunes, and the group size is listed after the name, hence the Miles Davis Quintet or the Bill Evans Trio. It's jazz shorthand that tells fans more or less what to expect when they are scanning live listings, record bins and [...]
Fact: Medeski Martin & Wood are cooler than you think. I mean, they have to be, right? There's no way they could get away with half the stuff they do otherwise. A case in point is their 2008 album Let's Go Everywhere . It's music for children. For years, kids' music has been uniformly dreadful, all cloying simplistic singalong stuff. It's as if someone decided that every line must end with a perfect cadence, forever, and nobody got around to challenging this. Not until MMW, anyway, who offered an alternative agenda: [...]
At last year's SXSW music fest, John McCauley of Deer Tick, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes and Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit debuted their new roots-rock supergroup, which at the time was dubbed MG&V after their collective last names. After a busy 2010 for the members' full time bands, and a name change to Middle Brother , the act has announced that not only will their long awaited self-titled debut finally come out on March 1, but that they will hit the road for a 13-date March tour that will also include select dates where both [...]

In the pantheon of gut wrenching, emotionally charged break up albums none may top the sheer heartbreak found throughout Bob Dylan's 1975 release Blood On The Tracks . The album has been mined for its share of covers over the years, but it's the first time we are actually featuring a track from what is arguably one of Dylan's best LPs. While there may be a few more obvious choices, we're going with the moody album's melancholy closing track, Buckets Of Rain . The [...]

Day Four – I cool breeze swept the Bonnaroo my campground early Sunday morning. This would be the biggest tease considering the Weather Channel was calling for a high of 104 degrees today. This was also the first day I would be able to take shower while camping at Bonnaroo. For every 10 campgrounds there is a shower station. So obviously as the day goes on, the line gets longer. The shower stations are nothing special, probably something you'd expect at any other campground. It's how you feel once you step outside and the air hits your clean skin that [...]

On June 8 and 9, Medeski, Martin and Wood will play host to a special two-night webcast event that will take place at the Nevessa Soundstage near Woodstock, NY, which will see the band playing a two-set show and sharing insights on the art of improvisation through an interactive Master Class. While a limited number of tickets are available for $100 for one night, and $160 for both - with access to the webcast running you $24.95, we're giving away a pair of tickets to both nights of the intimate event, as [...]

A few weeks back, I caught one of my favorite Medeski, Martin & Wood shows I've seen to date. These guys seem to be a point in their career where they can do no wrong, and the show I saw definitely did not disappoint. So I thought I'd ask a friendly taper if we could use his source of the show for our next podcast and he happily complied with the ask, so hopefully this little podcast mix will help you groove your way through your Sunday. I threw the tracks together using my new [...]
Despite the fact that Thom Yorke's solo album, The Eraser, came out all the way back in 2006, the enigmatic Radiohead front man has finally deemed it time to do some full band shows in support. Last year, Yorke assembled an ad-hoc band that consisted of RHCP's bassist Flea, producer Nigel Godrich, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco for a string of shows in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theater. Yorke will now bring these very same folks [...]

Photo © Pete Merrimen Last night was the third time I've gotten to see Medeski, Martin & Wood since I've relocated myself to the Bay Area, and my friends and I left the venue in awe of an unbelievable confident band that seems to get tighter and tighter every day they continue to play together. In the past, I remember I actually thinking that these guys were boring at times and couldn't get their act together to find a groove, but those past few shows have been nothing but concise and directed. [...]
