02 This summer, one of my favorite local bands, Churchill , released a set of covers they'd done of different Denver bands. I love that this city can do something so wonderful in a self-contained fashion. Their cover of Meese 's "Standards" was my favorite of the bunch. Bethany's delicate vocals capture the vulnerability of the original. Churchill - Standards And as always, the original: Meese - Standards

Cat Food Never Decays Remember American college rock from the '90s? Superchunk, Sebadoh and Pavement appear to be huge influences on Auckland band Meese and their press release confirms it, also name-checking Modest Mouse and Built To Spill. This video for their single 'Waiting For A Holiday' is built upon a retro '90s vibe, in the spirit of reckless DIY grunge videos and VCR-style technology. The three band members (Alex Angrignon, Sophie van der Linden and Sam Harper) build up an image of a psychedelic wonderland, playing in [...]

New news from the Centennial kids! Those of you unfortunate to make it to the Hi-Dive last week are in luck. The group had initially given their new EP, "Second Spring", as a free souvenir for being lucky attendees, but the trio are now giving the EP away for free. If you like, and feel inclined to do so, you may also contribute to their cause as well. You can download and contribute here and in even better news, they've announced a new show. December 18th will see the trio play w/Nathaniel Rateliff as [...]
Like Lazarus, the Brothers Meese have risen from the ashes to create new group, the Centennial . The Centennial welcomes Patrick Meese's wife, Tiffany, to round out the trio. The male/female harmonies aesthetic brings a welcomed change to a different direction being carved out by the new outfit. The lead single "19883 (see below) is gorgeously wispy with a soft melody that has me anxiously awaiting to listen to the rest of the EP or possible full length headed our way. The Centennial is slated to have their EP release, "Second Spring", tonight at [...]

The brothers Meese, crafters of " tight pop " have a new album, Broadcast , that came out yesterday. Could it be that there's a new emerging music scene in.. Denver? Hmm. Meese: Taking The World On.mp3
Meese is releasing their debut album Broadcast, a collection of rock-infused pop songs with a side of avant-garde electronic flair, on June 30th. The first single looks to be the toe-tapping "Next In Line," which frontman Patrick Meese says is his favorite song to play live simply cause it makes him feel like a badass. After giving the album a listen through, there's certainly many catchy bits
Yesterday was the 15th Annual Westword Music Showcase and one of the best turnouts I've seen at this Denver event. A few days ago I posted a Special Edition Snobcast where I wrote an extensive preview about the bands I felt were highlights this year. This wasn't meant to diminish any of the other bands playing, it's just that in most cases I had already seen many of the other bands worth seeing. So now that the showcase is over and done with I'm sure you're wondering to yourself (or maybe even out-loud), "Hey Father Guido! [...]

Here's the first of many captures from yesterday's Westword Music Showcase , a performance by Elin Palmer in the spectacular Curious Theatre . Delays in stage setup resulted in a late start, but a nice sized crowd streamed into the theatre as soon as doors opened. While short, the overall mood and attentive crowd made this my favorite Elin show to-date. In celebration Meese will be doing an in-store performance at Twist and Shout, June 30th @ 6 PM. They will also be playing the Westword Music Showcase next month, alongside, Built to Spill and a Place to Bury Strangers, amongst other notable local acts. The future looks pretty bright for these Cleveland transplants (I won't hold it against them because they're Cavs fans) because they are touring with some [...]

We can't listen to metal all the time, but whatwith the massive amount of CDs and press packs we receive it's hard to find time to get to anything else. Usually if I'm not listening to metal it's '70s soul/r&b/funk with some classic reggae or dub thrown in for the more "festive" occasions, but there [...]
Music is kind of awesome and all, but sometimes the Best Albums of 2008 lists can get to be monotonous in their lack of variety. You liked Bon Iver? Wow. That's a surprise. (Except for Father Guido's list, of course, which is amazing and you can read/hear it here ) Julio from Cause=Time , however, extended the Best of 2008 list to include "whatever," and he also asked all his blogger/writer/DJ/musician friends for input. The end result is a highly entertaining list of top five t-shirts, Facebook statuses, slang expressions, hot couples, idiotic mistakes, best [...]

Because of previous obligations I didn't make it to the festival grounds until about 1:30, meaning I missed both Born in the Flood and Meese, two Denver local bands that are pretty much essentials at this point. I did however get there in time to see State Radio, whom I'd never heard anything by. Born in the Flood - Low Flying Clouds Messe - Letters [...]

Attending a music festival could be my favorite way to spend a weekend. But you always end up seeing fewer shows than you thought, especially when there are five geographically disparate stages. Next time I go to a festival, I am going to hire me a scheduling assistant to do nothing but look at the clock and tell me when to move it along, please, to the next show. And then physically force me to do it (" Get up, Heather. Walk now ."). So I didn't see all the bands I wanted to, but what I saw [...]
