Quick - clear fifteen minutes to listen to this! "Hey Mami" only about three and a half minutes long, but you're going to want to listen to it at least five times on the immediate. I've had it on repeat all day long. Sylvan Esso is Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and Nick Sanborn of Megafaun who have teamed up to create music that sounds exactly like you'd expect from such a mash-up made in heaven, but even better. Meath provides the striking, silvery vocals backed by [...]
Sylvan Esso is new project from Mountain Man's Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn of Megafaun. Their first single "Hey Mami" is the perfect synthesis of both group's sound - folksy crooning and layered harmonies from Meath and Sanborn's crunchy synths that both bounce and stutter. It's an unexpected sound for a song that ruminates on cat-calling, but the hybrid is enchanting. Check it out below. Read More...
Bon Iver's Justin Vernon has a bug for collaborations, which is evident from his work with artists varying from Peter Gabriel to Kanye West. Now he's gotten together with Brain Moen (Peter Wolf Crier) and Phil Cook (Megafaun) to write some good ol' blues rock as The Shouting Matches . Though the group's debut record, Grownass Man , still features delicate, pretty songs like " I Need A Change " and the Bon-Iverish " Gallup, NM ," it's tracks like the lazily rocking "New Theme" that are the heart of the record. The tune is [...]
Over the course of two full-length studio albums and an EP Bon Iver front man Justin Vernon has enchanted us with his heart-tugging falsetto vocals and lushly arranged folk-rock. If you think you've got him pegged as just the poster child for the beard-rock movement then think again, as Vernon has unleashed a new side with his latest project The Shouting Matches . The three-piece act, that also features Brian Moen (Peter Wolf Crier) and Phil Cooke (Megafaun), originally came together back in 2006, in the wake of the break-up of the much mythologized DeYarmond Edison. The band, [...]

Justin Vernon ( Bon Iver ) has teamed up with friends Phil Cook (formerly DeYarmond Edison with Vernon, currently Megafaun ) and Brian Moen ( Peter Wolf Crier ) to form blues-rock trio, The Shouting Matches . They released Grownass Man on April 9. Fans of the genre will immediately take to this record, yet also note that the record isn’t breaking any new ground. Instead, the trio is proving their capability at putting out gritty, Southern blues with ease. Grownass Man sounds like a side-project for all [...]

I found this album yesterday morning, and since have relentlessly listened to it at least a half dozen times. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I love this album. It's a lof of blues rock, a little Zepplin, smoothly soulful at times, and there are moments where Tom Petty meets Wilco. It's strange and beautiful. I was doing some research yesterday as I have heard of this Justin Vernon project, but honestly hadn't heard them yet. Most are calling this a side project, but in a tweet yesterday , Justin himself corrected that [...]

Field Report's Chris Porterfield performing live BY JORDAN MAINZER The third guy’s a charm. That is, Field Report’s Chris Porterfield is the third and latest spin off from retrospectively super indie supergroup DeYarmond Edison, the early 2000s band that also included Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and the members of Megafaun. Porterfield’s surname-anagram band released their excellent self-titled debut last year and played most of it on the night of March 5th at Evanston SPACE. A six-piece band, Field Report transformed the intimate sounds of their debut to the bourgeois suburban venue [...]
Alright, I know this seems like a cop out. You may already be asking yourself, "Wait, didn't this band break up in 2006?". The answer to that question, my friends, would be yes, they did. These musicians created songs of simple beauty that are often overlooked due to the later successes of each individual artist. This is why I am taking the time to give public appreciation to an unsigned band of the past, a ghost in our musical memories that deserves more than a lingering itch of what could have been. DeYarmond Edison, a [...]

In a period where some artists are looking for the new, the cool and the hype, some others go back to the classics. Matthew E. White has come out of the blue with Big Inner , a psychedelic New Weird America album, that rediscovers the roots of American music. The spiritual and southern vibes of Big Inner can be easily traced back: White was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Christian missionaries. The album, recorded in the [...]

Standing out among this year's breakout acts is Field Report, the new folk project from Minnesota native Chris Porterfield. Formerly a member of the Eau Claire band DeYarmond Edison (which also featured Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and members of Megafaun), Porterfield relocated to Milwaukee where he rekindled his love for music . When its eponymous debut was ... Continue reading

Megafaun Album: Self-titled (Buy) Label: Hometapes Megafaun - Resurrection Tweet
[Photos by acidjack] Megafaun are one of several Triangle-area bands that have gone national recently, and they are also one of our personal favorites. Since being introduced to the band when they opened for fellow Triangle-area band The Mountain Goats, and our own Sharon Van Etten , we have followed their progress to becoming a headliner and national act in their own right with pleasure. But on their home turf, Megafaun aren't just an up-and-coming act from out of town; they are stars in their own right. The Americana-driven band was the centerpiece [...]

Over the last few weeks I've been fairly obsessed with the self-titled debut from Field Report , which will hit stores via Partisan Records on September 11. Hailing from Milwaukee, any story that you're going to read about the band in the coming weeks is going to include the following fact: Chris Porterfield was once a member of DeYarmond Edison , the short-lived and much mythologized act that impressively included not only members of Megafaun, but also Mr. Bon Iver himself - Justin Vernon. When the band decided to move their home-base from from [...]
I may have mentioned it here before, but making mix tapes is one of my favorite hobbies. At some point during high school, which I mostly found unbearable, I distinctly remember thinking that I had all these great sad songs, but they were spread out over too many different albums. Why not combine them into one powerful tape of self-loathing? Seemed a great idea at the time. I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm feeling down, I just can't stand upbeat music. I'd rather play something that echoes my mood; it's always done a much better job of [...]

Field Report (Milwaukee, WI) is the current project of Chris Porterfield - formerly of DeYarmond Edison (with Justin Vernon/Bon Iver and members of Megafaun ). He was also the mastermind behind Conrad Plymouth . We were able to convince Porterfield and his band mates to swing by Stone House Recording the night after opening for Emmylou Harris to lay down these hauntingly beautiful tracks. We just hope the videos do the songs justice. Field Report will release it's self titled debut album on September 11th(Partisan Records). The album was recorded [...]
The Newport Folk Festival has weathered many a storm in its 53 year history. It disappeared in the '70s, nearly went bankrupt in the aughts, and faced a complete dry up of sponsorships. But last year, Newport jewelers Alex and Ani stepped in to became a major backer, the festival returned to non-profit status, and a Board of Advisors (Colin Meloy, Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Jim James, and Ben Knox Miller) was established. Now, the festival has never been stronger, and even some damp evenings couldn’t keep the 2012 edition from being another in a nearly unbroken [...]
