It's been pretty quiet around here for awhile (so quiet that we're pretty sure just our mom's are checking this thing at this point) (hi moms!), but even though we haven't been writing all that much, we promise we've still been listening to loads of good music. So putting this list together has been a good chance for us to finally put down how we feel about some of the great stuff we've heard this year. We just hope it's as fun for you to browse through as it was for us to pull together! Before reading on, [...]

The second part of Given and Taken in Ink's autumn mix is now up on 8tracks: Every time I make a new list, I think it's the best one I've ever done. Sometimes that's actually true. This just may be one of those times. There's the pure pop joy (no pun intended) of "Murderous Joy," the quirky brilliance of Siskiyou, and the weary rasp of Dan Mangan. I love the tranquility of "State / Meant" juxtaposed with the anxiously dreamlike "Curfews." "Ghost Towns" and "My Friends" are highlights of two masterful albums. And I [...]

Pine trees and icicles and carolers - check. But can we please just talk for a moment about how it was -2 degrees the other night in Colorado? TWO BELOW, with howling winds. I like the beer , but man alive that makes for some cold sleeping. All the golden loveliness of autumn is gone, and in its place we have this icy, silent cocoon all around us, luminescent and silvery-blue. Perhaps I just have to survive these next two weeks of school, and maybe go on a little cookie-baking binge, and [...]
Girls ::: photo by Josh Lovseth End of year lists give me the cold sweats. Much like when I was in college and finals were looming, I suddenly forget about everything that sparked in my mind, and all I'm left with is, "I don't know…when did River Deep, Mountain High come out? THAT COUNTS, RIGHT?" 2011 was [...]

Bowerbirds have given a sneak peak at their upcoming album The Clearing with this new single "Tuck the Darkness In." The North Carolina band has come quite a way since they formed in 2006, as evidenced by the fact that this album was recorded in Bon Iver's studios. [...]

Megafaun, "You Are The Light" get it on Megafaun (2011) Things I'm a sucker for that are present in this song: Horn swells. In fact, if I was to start up a band, I'd probably call it Horn Swells. You can use it on your own band, but only if you're really awesome. A hymn feel. This is likely the name of the debut album by Horn Swells. [...]
Megafaun have a great set with World Cafe . Not to be missed. Listen to a new Tennis song at Gorlla Vs. Bear . Conrad Plymouth will be working on a new album next month! We're big fans of Twin Peaks . In fact, we just re-watched the series over the past few months. Aquarium Drunkard points to some great audio from the show. School of Seven Bells Remix Surfer [...]

Cali psych-folk trio Megafaun have been around for a while, having played together in various incarnations since the mid-90s before forming the band in 2007. Since then, they've put out 4 records, including this year's 'Megafaun', an intriguing blend of rock, folk, country and psychedelia, including highlight track 'Kill The Horns'. A quietly powerful ballad, 'Kill The Horns' has a certain star quality that could make it everyone's favourite new track. Megafaun 'Megafaun' 2xLP/CD/DIG out September 20, 2011 on Hometapes.
