Over the last few years, the state of Wisconsin has been churning out new American folk acts at an unprecedented rate. Field Report is the latest concoction from the Badger state. The band is the project of Chris Porterfield, formerly of Justin Vernon/Megafaun's band DeYarmond Edison. When the band broke up, Porterfield stayed in Wisconsin and began writing his own songs. We mentioned that Field Report was one of our favorite new discoveries at SXSW this year. Christopher Porterfield ended his previous Milwaukee-based band, Conrad Plymouth, and emerged with a new one called Field Report, seemingly overnight. They recorded an album at Justin Vernon's studio in December of last year and more recently, they've been touring in support of Megafaun (a perfect pairing). Field Report is the project of Chris Porterfield, a former member of DeYarmond Edison. If you remember DeYarmond Edison, then you probably know that its other members went on to form other successful projects -- Bon Iver and Megafaun ring a bell? Before Justin Vernon took Bon Iver into the next stratosphere, he was in a North Carolina by way of Wisconsin band called DeYarmond Edison. After putting out two full lengths and an EP, DeYarmond Edison split with Vernon forming Bon Iver, and three of the other members forming the "freak folk" band Megafaun. Now, a third faction from DeYarmond Edison has formed, with former member Chris Porterfield forming the new outfit Field Report.
