So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]
With a tour kick-off show in hew new hometown, Megan Hamilton & The Volunteer Canola get things started on Saturday, May 8th at the Toucan in Kingston for a free show with Toronto friends Jetset Motel (recently heard on the last 4 episodes of The Republic of Doyle, and a band Megan toured with in [...]

The talented, wicked-smart, beautiful, and otherwise awesome Megan Hamilton , who last fall relocated to Kingston, Ontario, has a central/western Canada tour coming up next month. It starts in Ontario and then she and her band will make there way out to Vancouver and back in a van. I wish them well! Go see them if you can. They are in Toronto on 14 May at the Holy Oak, host to many charming lower-key (but still rocking) shows. Download : Megan Hamilton & the Volunteer Canola , " [...]

As far as my favorite songs go, this seems to be the year for the grand epic. I don't know what it is, but the longer progressive numbers were the ones that seemed to have the biggest impact on me, which you'll notice as you start perusing through the following list. On top of that, if you want to get technical, the entire Decemberists album is basically arranged as one lengthy 55 minute song and should actually be my number one song of the year, but that would just be a little too redundant, what with it already [...]

"See Your Midnight Breath In The Shipyard" starts with a gorgeously soft melody that is reminiscent of mornings I've spent sitting on a porch at a friends cottage with a cup of tea, the lake covered with mist as the sun slowly burns it off. Haunting harmonies sound like they are coming from the bowels of a submarine, yet Hamilton's voice keeps the song from floating away, grounding the song like the pines trees standing beside the cottage. Hamilton's voice is like a mix of Issa (formerly Jane Siberry ), Allison Crowe , Buffy Sainte [...]
The mouthful of a titled See Your Midnight Breath In the Shipyard is the new album from Toronto-based indie singer/songwriter Megan Hamilton. This is the third release Hamilton has done with Gemini Award-winning sound producer Mark Vogelsang. The focal point of the album is undoubtedly Hamilton's songwriting. Each track is well-crafted lyrically, giving the listener a glimpse into the private

Since the backlog of music we have is enough to fill a Super Guppy , we'll keep the comments fairly brief and let the music speak play for itself. Actually, there's so much to get caught up on we may have a second weekend inbox on Sunday. Thanks for your patience to all the nice folks whom have sent music to us, and special thanks to all that take time to visit even with the long breaks between posts due to that four-letter thing called work. No particular order [...]

Megan Hamilton 's album See Your Midnight Breath in the Shipyard or as it is called for short, SYMBitS, came out on 4/7. The boa'd Torontonian, pictured above, recently opened for My Morning Jacket during their Z tour and is now making the rounds all throughout Canada. In this swirling yet soothing cyclone of a song she offers up some advice on the proper disposal of coffee grinds. Survey says that her advice, for the most part , is right: [...]
A quick post to encourage you all to attend Kingston's Home Grown Live Music Festival which is happening at venues all across town on May 9th. By my count there will be 68 bands from all across the spectrum - from folk, jazz, rock, celtic, country, etc. - so chances are there is going to be something that tickles your fancy. Check out the schedule for bands, times, & venues. This event is raising funds to support Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument Lending Library (website is down, but trust me it is [...]

web site For some reason, I still thought of Megan Hamilton as the artist pumping out the quirky, country/folk tracks she delivered on her debut, The Feudal Ladies Club . I actually forgot about her shape shifting EP ( How We Think About Light ) and dramatic change in sound she underwent on some of those six songs. If I had remembered, I probably wouldn't have been so shocked by her latest effort, See Your Midnight Breath in the Shipyard . Even then, Hamilton was working on darker (in my opinion Beach House) sounds, [...]

MEGAN HAMILTON - SEE YOUR MIDNIGHT BREATH IN THE SHIPYARD Megan Hamilton 's sophomore release See Your Midnight Breath In The Shipyard is to be released on April 7th across Canada, and it really is a hauntingly beautiful piece of work. She continues to keep her feet firmly grounded in the world of ethereal folk rock, but the combination of experimental arrangements and her unique and slightly strange voice helps this one rise above your typical indie fare. The album opens with a few [...]

Frank Yang You know what they say about the best laid plans, right? Well I should have known after assembling my complete itinerary for Canadian Musicfest last week (I've opted to not be difficult and just accept the new branding), it would get - if not thrown out the window then at least shaken up significantly. Thursday night started as intended, at the Silver Dollar to see Ketch Harbour Wolves , but I'm sad to report that their live show failed to impress the way their recorded output has. [...]

A quick update before I run off to terrorize the stage at my local open mic: Megan Hamilton , friend of WHK and ethereal Toronto musician extraodinaire, recently announced the release of her sophomore full-length album. Called See Your Midnight Breath in the Shipyard , the album is set to come out on April 7, 2009. The press releases describes it as a combination of "Mazzy Star/Joanna Newson/Beach Boys/Velvet Underground/Chad VanGaalen" so it should be pretty interesting! Of course, April's still far away, so what is Megan Hamilton doing for you lately? Well, on [...]
Date: April 4, 2008 Venue: Rancho Relaxo Getting off my butt to see a Megan Hamilton show had been a long time coming. I mean, I was introduced to her music last year and she even became the first (and thus far only) artist to be featured in a WHK spotlight (more on the way...I promise). Seeing the Toronto songstress live was the next logical step and this past Friday night at Rancho Relaxo provided the perfect opportunity. Kicking [...]
Friday morning and we're almost done the work week. Woohoo! Megan Hamilton has a track to help us reflect. She is a classic singer/songwriter that sounds like a folky Sheryl Crow, but plays music like the lovely Joanna Newsom, throwing in what I can only describe as a flitty island sound about a minute and a half into the track. Toronto singer-songwriter Megan Hamilton released the follow-up to her 2006 debut Feudal Ladies Club this week in the form of the How We Think About Light EP. It picks up where the full-length left off, with its woozily playful countryisms and heads off to a more high, lonesome and autumnal place with some new production tricks (My Morning Jacket called - they want their reverb back) and even some rock attitude in tow. The benefits of playing with a full band, The Volunteer Canola, [...]

We received a nice email from Megan Hamilton letting us know about her upcoming record, How We Think About Light . Megan's last effort – Feudal Ladies Club – was a delicate slice of country/folk pop that dripped with emotion (full review here ). The new record marks a very big change for the Hamilton. She worked with Mark Vogelsang again, and the familiarity obviously helped Hamilton grow. The first track, Are the Birds Caught in the Trees , sounds more like a Beach House track the [...]

Megan Hamilton and David Pico just finished up a Canadian tour. I wish they'd have come South to Chicago. They both have new records out and compliment each other well. Megan is a whispy singer but not mousy in any way. Her songs just don't explode out of the speakers. On "Don't Ask Me" her hazy whispered vocals are perfect for this tale of the fading love affair and subsequent breakup. This is not a point counterpoint type post so just [...]
Megan Hamilton is a Toronto-based songwriter. Her debut album, Feudal Ladies Club , is a suprisingly sophisticated release. Her country/folk vocals are encased in beautiful arrangements, and supported by drums, guitars and even some autoharp. Although this description is accurate, it also simplifies Megan's work. This isn't just another coffee house act releasing a debut album. Her voice has strains beautifully at points, showing that the emotion and the feel of the record was the most important aspect of recording. As the album opens with an old piano, [...]
