Trolling through the archives of showbiz periodical Variety, I came across this unique Basil Wolverton rendering of legendary voice actor Mel Blanc. Wolverton, as you can plainly see, was one of Robert Crumb's main inspirations. Mel Blanc was known for his prolific work on radio, notably The Jack Benny Program , and, of course, as the voice of most Looney Tunes characters.

Despite heavy snow and internet problems, I'm here to bring on my little pile of Holiday Goodies for ya. Perhaps you caught some of my multi-part Celebrity Anti-Drug PSA series here at BOTB, well these last six entries are some of the crown jewels of my spoken-word files and I've been enjoying them a great deal ever since I taped the 'Get Off volume 2' radio-only lp at KZSC Santa Cruz in 1982. Today's focus is on the legendary Mel Blanc and his fantastic and unforgettable anti-narcotics PSA's, [...]
For the past few weeks, my daughter has been watching Looney Tunes cartoons quite a bit…and I must admit that I've plopped down on the couch and joined her a few times. After all, who doesn't love the Looney Tunes ? Think of all the classic characters they created; Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Tweetie Bird, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Speedy Gonzales, Wile E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester Cat, the Tasmanian Devil, Pepé Le Pew, Marvin the Martian, the list goes on and on. Sheesh, my co-workers and I have even been reminiscing [...]

This will absolutely be the silliest Multiple Monday ever, and it's also another oddball one. We're looking at some wildly different (but all closely-related) versions of a call-and-response style of song. (Next week I can put up a regular MM post, I think.) So, sometime in the last four hundred years (estimates vary and historians are widely divided on the genealogy of the song ), German-speakers came up with a call-and-response song named " Schnitzelbank ." It's known in America these days as a drinking song heard at Oktoberfests all around the [...]
As usual, here is the recap post, offering you one-stop shopping for Christmas songs. I encourage you to browse the archives and read the notes. By coincidence, I notice that many of these songs are originals, rather than cover versions, and I also notice that there's only one traditional carol. It wasn't intentional, but it's a reflection of my interest in holiday pop originals. Most of the time, people do covers and I understand why. It's hard to write a really good new Christmas songs and people usually want to hear to old [...]
Golly, remember novelty records? I love them. For the past thirty years, you'd find them mainly on the Dr. Demento radio show, but one would occasionally break through to the radio, such as that damned " Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer ." This piece by Sean Ross and this one by Rodney Ho look at why radio has abandoned the novelty song and left it to the Internet to pick up the slack. For example, "Weird Al" Yankovic's " White and Nerdy " got [...]
