This past summer I caught a local show featuring She Wants Revenge , but I really went to see IMA Robot . I enjoyed both and wasn't disappointed, but I was actually blown away by the band I wasn't even aware would be present, the opener, Mellowdrone . An LA quartet led by guitarist and vocalist Jonathon Bates, Mellowdrone skillfully skips from atmospheric shoegazer moodscapes to hard driving synth pieces. All songs are layered with a wry wit that is both melancholy and cynical but never nihilistically inaccessible. I'll post a [...]

On Saturday September 30, my wife and I drove down to Delaware and went to that evening's showcases for the Dewey Beach Music Conference . The showcases were free, so we wandered around quite a bit. I picked up several cds that I still need to go through, but there were a few live highlights that I would like to mention. A band that I stumbled upon, was NYC's The Primms . They are actually a British band [...]

I found out that today is one of our Baltimore reader's birthday. I have been wanting to do a mix for awhile now, so I thought that this would be a great opportunity. This mix is basically inspired by some of her favorites and is mostly older material. It's nice, because this is some stuff that I haven't been able to get to much recently and it is a nice break from all of this ACL coverage. Our readers mean everything to us, so Happy Birthday. We wish you the best! [...]

Ready for another round of weekend-long festival madness? No? Well, too bad because Sunset Junction is back with another impressive lineup of local awesomeness. Highlights include Redd Kross , eels, and Lavender Diamond on day one and Hank III, The Cramps, and Dave Alvin on day dos. It will be hot and sticky and filled with no-shirt wearing hot and sticky people. Fabulous... Another must-go is tonight's yearly songwriter tribute at the Will Geer Theatricum. This summer's series finale will be in honor of the great Woody Guthrie and will feature performances from Van Dyke Parks [...]

Run Chico Run / Slow Action ( Boompa ) British Columbians Run Chico Run became a duo by circumstance when the third leg of their trio bailed right before a tour and the unconventional arrangement has served them well. The sound on their latest album Slow Action is quite a contrast to what I witnessed when I saw them at SxSW in 2004 - while that was a storm of drums, huge fuzzy walls of keyboards and questionable facial hair, their [...]
Just heard about this group and like em alot. Their debut album "BOX" comes out January 24 and after what I've heard already, I will be buying this album. Reminds me of Muse, yet not as hard but still edgy. I really want to bring attention to their music video for "Fashionably Uninvited." It's great cinematography and beautiful effects for such a great song. I can't wait to get my hands on some more of their new music. "Fashionably Uninvited" music video.
