Memory Tapes – Grace/Confusion [Album Review] The summer of 2009, or the summer of “chillwave” as it were, was a fun, nostalgic trip for indie rock. Debuts from Neon Indian , Washed Out , and Toro Y Moi were the soundtrack to beach trip car rides and backyard parties across the country. Replete with hazy, drug-induced synths, slow-mo dance beats and submerged vocals, the chillwave sound dipped into synth-pop and dance rock while layering plenty of shoegaze sensibility on top for added dreamy effect. But what better way to come back than to a new Memory Tapes album? I've enjoyed frontman Dayve Hawk's work since 2007, when I featured his disco-friendly Hail Social project. He remains a highly infectious and varied songwriter with Memory Tapes, where he has produced his best and most expansive works to date. Stream New Memory Tapes LP, “Sheila” Track Memory Tapes gets a bit less "chillwave" on his latest "LP"   Grace/Confusion (LP in quotes because not sure how 6 songs can be considered an LP...but i digress).  He's added in a good amount of aching guitar lines and heavy bass breakdowns which has resulted in a much more broad range of styles throughout the album, keeping things interesting and less bedroom-y. You can stream the whole album over at pitchfork , but i've embedded what I consider the standout track "Sheila", which starts off with a light piano (organ?) [...]
