Thanks to the good folks over at Indie Montreal , I have another exciting ticket giveaway offer for you all today. This time it's for an artist we've covered before , the New Jersey-based chillwave virtuoso Dayve Hawk, better known as Memory Tapes. Hawk is touring in support of his new album Player Piano which came out last month, and he will be stopping by Montreal on Friday, August 12th to play a show at Club Lambi with Golden Isles and Tops. If you want to win a pair of tickets, all you have to do is write to me at [...]
July provided us with a massive compilation, boasting 18 tracks that span over an hour. As expected with a compilation of that length, there are plenty of interesting stylistic pursuits inside. The Stepkids nod to the '70s by tackling a genius fusion of soul and psych-rock, while the '80s make an appearance with several artists [...]

Windish Agency I've no doubt that Dayve Hawk loathes the term/scene/epithet "chillwave" that was attached to his musical identity of Memory Tapes when he emerged last year, and fairly so - its connotations were rarely positive, or at least applied without some snark, and many of the acts who would been considered his peers were kind of terrible. But if I hadn't done the cursory, "so what the hell is this all about" investigation, I might not have ever heard his debut Seek Magic and that would have been [...]
The stripped-down sound of Warm Speakers provides an excellent example of modern-day bedroom pop. Long Island native Patrick Berlinquette follows in the footsteps of names like Washed Out, Neon Indian, and Toro y Moi in crafting a sound full of nostalgia, with '80s electro-pop meshing with several electronic fusions from the '90s onward. For Warm [...]

For our showcase this month we were very excited to work with Carpark Records to get Class Actress on board. Not only are they home to a bunch of killer artists, but they happen to be based in DC as well. Their roster, however, goes beyond district boundaries, including heavy hitters like South Carolina's Toro y Moi , Baltimore's Beach House and Adventure , and Jersey's Memory Tapes . For those of you enrolled in Record Label 101, Carpark is a must-know for the final. Familiarize yourself with their [...]

Well, I wasn't expecting that. I figured The Memory Tapes would roll into Slims in SF, play something chill and roll on out leaving their fans relaxed, all mellowed out. Clearly, I didn't do my homework. Saying they played songs from their last two albums (more heavy on their recently released album, Player Piano ) in a more uptempo fashion would be doing the live versions a disservice. Every song was dancified and extended, and with great effect. The ambient, chill melody, 'Yes I Know' , the first single off their newest release Player Piano , was played [...]

It doesn't get much better than this, people. Memory Tapes latest, Player Piano , is also his greatest; a triumphant collection of electronically-enhanced, self-confessed girl-group inspired pop songs, book-ended between two quaint little instrumentals. Although the lyrics throughout can and will invoke darker atmospheres of isolation and longing, the music rarely enters a particularly gloomy state, preferring to offer nostalgic trances reminiscent of the 80s. Songs are encouragingly vibrant; take the first major track, "Wait In The Dark." The song begins with a propulsive drum-beat and soft synths, before breaking out into a beautiful harmony of dissonant electronics. Dayve [...]

On July 5, Dayve Hawk, aka Memory Tapes, returned with his sophomore release Player Piano , a 12-track album more musically bold, with handcrafted lyrical tales and charmingly reedy vocals than the reverberated 4AM synth dance-pop party [...]
Painted Palms and Memory Tapes do San Francisco. Hot.

Photograph by Paul Bridgewater "I still think I'm totally blagging it", says Seams - better known as Jami Welch, even to most of his listeners - as we tie up our interview which has now probably gone on too long, dangerously veering somewhere either side of the hour mark. Our Q and A session has somehow made multiple unravelling digressions and taken us on some idle, not entirely fit-for-publication tangents: weighing the socio-technological value of Google Plus, a detailed discussion of Jami's love of all things [...]

Your solid Saturday touts: ► Power pop fanatics need not stay home tonight, because the Posies [pictured above] play 19932s "Frosting On The Beater" tonight at the Viper Room. ► She never really just worked 9 to 5. Country's legendary lady Dolly Parton plays a second night at Hollywood Bowl. ► Chillwavers Memory Tapes headlines the Troubadour with local psychedelic, R&B-infused, pop group Electric Guest playing as support. ► If you couldn't get into Ty Segall 's sold-out show last night, San Francisco's garage-rock [...]
