Reworking and sampling '00s r&b hits into abstract electronic loops is the trend du jour in the postdubstep world nowadays. British bedroom producer Memotone is the latest to join the bandwagon, by recontextualizing Aaliyah 's Timbaland-produced stone cold classic "Try Again" into a beat-heavy, cowbell-adorned number, while still retaining some of the hip-hop flavor. And it's surprisingly replayable. The chipmunk pitch shifts are expected, but the drumwork here is really impressive. It couldn't be released at a better time, as today would have been her 33rd birthday. Sometimes I do wonder how different the R&B [...]

Its Friday again - you're happy, we're happy, let's get our dance on. Awwww yeah! Download Dance Music Post. 14 (.zip) Last week we gave you lovely people a heavy dubstep remix of The Weeknd's "D.D.", and this week we have a much less aggressive remix from Pretty Lights Music signee Paper Diamond, who's taken "Same Old Song" and given it the old once over. No one really knows what the old once over is, but I hope we can all agree that the results are pretty fantastic. [...]

Experimental beat maker Memotone brings a fresh perspective to the electronic music scene, spanning the wonky house to the jazz influenced electronica. Minimal, dark and thick with layers, think Four Tet meets Burial, his cleverly crafted tracks are brilliant in their individual right. He had some of his music played on the Gilles Peterson show a few months back and is set to release his latest "Memotone - EP" on Raised By Records. Get on down to Start The Bus in Bristol for the launch party on the 16th Sept, and witness yourself some good [...]

Memotone is defiantly an artist . You can tell. His songs are the archetypal male-alone-in -a-room-with-lots-of-electroni c-boxes music, and his website has lots of videos of him performing such rituals. His music is life, animated. Take Fractal : a quiet cacophany of clicks, found sounds and clips of everyday noises - spinning a coin, picking up some keys - all suddenly take on a huge importance when exposed to the punishing glare of a song that is as sparse as it is brightly lit. What is most [...]

This week it was my turn to pick/host the Monday Mixer, in which a bunch of blogs get together and each submits a track based on that week's theme. I decided to go with a "dubstep remix" theme because of my growing interest in dubstep, one I'm still trying to figure out myself. When I picked the theme, I thought I was going to get a lot of submissions that, honestly, I wouldn't enjoy. The internet, more specifically SoundCloud, has been plagued by a shitload of beyond ellaborate, gaudy attempts at dubstep. But to my [...]
