Before hippies and flip-flop wearing frat boys were going bonkers over Old Crow Medicine Show's version of "Cocaine Habit Blues" (it talks about drugs, y'all!) the songs was already 80 years old. Of course Old Crow did the song justice with their version of it, but, there isn't anything quite like hearing a jug being blown on for the bass lines. MP3: Memphis Jug Band - Cocaine Habit Blues
I've been struggling as to where to go with The Gumshoe Grove. More coverage of current bands? More trips down Nostalgia Lane? More ... girls in bikinis toting machine guns? To tone down the pressure I'm going to bring to your attention a 2CD Americana compilation I purchased years ago, The Stuff That Dreams [...]

Wikipedia The Memphis Jug Band was an American musical group in the late 1920s and early to mid 1930s. The band featured harmonicas, violins, mandolins, banjos, and guitars, backed by washboards, kazoo, and jugs blown to supply the bass; they played in a variety of musical styles. The band recorded almost a hundred titles

Here's the Memphis Jug Band. Cocaine habit blues Coal Oil Blues We're going back, way back, to the late 20's and early 30's today. One of the interesting things about this band is that the personnel changed regularly, usually centred around Will Shade who was the glue holding the group together.

I don't know about you, smooches, but I'm feelin like it's been a little too rock-y around here lately. The urge to take a deep breath and get back to basics has returned. The last time this happened, I found solace in Hank. Today I feel like dropping further back, in a time machine sponsored by Crazyfoot, who hepped me to the Memphis Jug Band. Lord, the kazoo can work wonders on the soul. Cub Coda of the Allmusic Guide describes their music as a " freewheeling mixture of blues, [...]
A couple of good bluesy tunes last week Memphis Jug Band - K.C Moon I can hear that kazoo T-Bone Walker - Call It Stormy Monday

Tuesday morning at the doctor's office. All the babies are crying except mine, but that's only because she just peed on the scale. A good pee always mellows her out. She's going to be so mad at me in eight years for writing this. Before I had one of my own, or rather before I became owned by one, sure, babies all looked and sounded the same. Right up to the day before she was born I worried I wouldn't be able to tell my baby apart from others. I shouldna worried. My baby's got personality. Like the [...]
There are probably more beautiful songs. There are songs that more people can probably sing along to. But the way in which "Stealin'" was written and has subsequently been performed makes it an American standard. Of late it seems to have been getting its due as well. Recently, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy took to the stage in NYC and luckily enough the folks from Aquarium Drunkard were there to capture the performance. During the set, BPB and his cohorts included a few versions of old tyme classics – "Stealin'" was one of them. You can find the [...]

It has been a rough weekend. I've come down with a nasty cold and Monday is the beginning of another long stretch of overtime at the plant. If I am to have any chance of surviving long days at work, I figured I'd need the help of modern pharmaceuticals. I know what you are thinking. Normally I would relieve my symptoms with a few homemade herbal remedies, but whatever has taken hold of me has kicked my butt, and with the overtime looming I figure I'll need industrial strength help. I made my way to the local pharmacy [...]

For me, this week brings a return to teaching full-time, which is kind of a drag, but the fact that Old Crow Medicine Show's Big Iron World is being released tomorrow will do a lot to make up for having to kiss my summer goodbye. You can actually purchase Big Iron World right now via itunes, or you can even stream the entire album for free over at CMT. Just click here . I thought I'd do a post today previewing two of the songs that they've included on the CD.. [...]
