Under solo alias Hubble, The Men's Ben Greenberg will take the tiniest of musical gestures—essentially, a grace-note-like snippet of guitar noodling—and play it over and over again until the listener kind of looses track as ... read more

Here is how the headlines will remember the week. President of the Catholic League is so fired up at Bowie's "The Next Day" music video that he called the pop star a, "switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen", while the media hedgefund-scaled hype surrounding The Great Gatsby redux only further reminds us of our current-crap-economic conditions, that finds Santigold moonlighting on "The Office" along with Clay Aiken and Aaron Rodgers to find "The Next Grea...
For the first time in - dare I say months? - I took a friend's music advice and it led to me stopping by Amoeba to pick up a new LP. This happens very infrequently. Alas, the album - Excavation by The Haxan Cloak - was too good to pass up. I know I don't typically post [...]

Robert Semmer On the list of ideal days on which to announce a tour itinerary, there's not many occasions better than the day the album you're actually going to promote goes on sale. And so yesterday, with the official release of their latest full-length Monomania , Atlanta's Deerhunter have announced the itinerary for their Fall tour behind it. It's an outing that brings them to The Phoenix in Toronto on September 12, and that leg of the tour also includes support from Marnie Stern , who herself released [...]

I picked up a new toy a few hours before my show. My bike had been in the shop for a few days with a broken spoke and to get a new chain and cassette (the latter of which was a special order item), and I decided to try out a 2012 model Trek. Ended up using my old bike as a trade in and coming home with the new ride pictured above. With this kind of reckless spending, I needed a garage/psychedelic rock kind of night. Here's my playlist for [...]
Elodie's name may means "keyboard" in French, it's well on a canvas she plies her fairy fingers. Elodie Clavier is a style-savvy illustrator, French Brittany native, whose inspiration tilts on daily street-seen details. For Maison Kitsuné, she painted silhouettes from the Spring-Summer 2013 collections, in airy inks. Below, find out this serie of watercolor-like paintings, which [...]
Here's what a fucking moron I am. I accidentally overdosed on Sudafed yesterday and wound up not getting a wink of sleep, with an insane heart rate I couldn't calm. It was one of the most uncomfortable nights of my life. I thought I was taking 6-hour Sudafed but I was taking 12-hour. The instructions [...]
Tweet [Photos courtesy of David Andrako ] The Men are one of those bands that have earned their critical darling status, not only by being a great live act, but by never standing still. Their 2012 effort on Sacred Bones Records , Open Your Heart , deservedly earned " Best New Music " status, softening some of the hard edges of the previous year's dirge-y (if solid) effort Leave Home. With 20132s [...]

White Lung is one of few modern bands in their genre on my radar, but it's with good reason that they were able to cut through the noise. Their music is strident, yet simple, their shows are grimy, but comfortable, and their frontwoman Mish Way's dissident attitude on and off-stage is magnetic even when it's feels off-putting. Last week the Canadian four-piece swung through Brooklyn on their tour with Iceage for a "secret" show, that turned out to be not-so-secret, at our best dingy garage-venue, The Acheron. We caught up with the band's female [...]

So I guess it's weird to everyone else that I like The Men . Sometimes I'm even surprised I like The Men. People never fail to voice their surprise when I tell them I've been loving the stuff they've been putting out for the last year and a half or so. I guess I get why – they're probably thinking of The Men of records past; the barreling hardcore brewed on the Brooklyn noise scene. If that's all you know of them, I guess that would be pretty weird to hear coming from me. I'm not exactly [...]
