We're already nearing the close of 2008, which means nerds and obsessives like yours truly are thinking about what we're going to include on our year-end best-of lists. While my list of top songs isn't yet ready for public consumption, I thought I'd share some songs that will likely make my final cut, but haven't really been widespread hits. The playlist below includes some of my favorite underexposed 2008 gems: None of these folks are wildly obscure, but you can hear more from these artists at their respective MySpace pages, which [...]

Menahan Street Band consists of members of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Budos Band, and other bands who producer Thomas Brenneck brought together to "record hits" in his Bushwick apartment. In fact the band is named after Menahan St. in Bushwick. " Led by Dap-Kings/Budos Band guitarist Thomas Brenneck, the album is, as THE FADER puts is, "filled with untouched palettes waiting to be sampled," while XLR8R says "most of the all-instrumental tracks waver between Motownish and Stax/Volt-esque flavor; the mood is very 'Soulsville'-era Isaac Hayes-meets-The Funk Brothers. Crisp, tight ensemble playing defines [...]
Menahan Street Band's full-length debut, Make the Road by Walking, is coming out next week on Daptone/Dunham Records. There have already been a few tracks up for downloading and streaming (and streaming), but AOL Spinner is currently exclusively streaming the entire album for this week and next. That doesn't happen to just anyone. In fact, the [...]
I hope it doesn't shatter your image of me as a rock and roll heavyweight when I admit that I look forward to chill Sunday mornings, going through my music library to find the sound that's just right for the quiet, testing the ingredients: relaxed but energetic, something that has enough grit to wake you up but not so many volume spikes that you feel jolted into the quietest day of the week.

Menahan Street Band, headed by the Dap-Kings/Budos Band's own Tommy Brenneck, already gave the world "Make the Road by Walking," the 45 of which was picked up by some producers who happened to work for, um...Jay-Z. Now, as autumn begins to slowly uncurl itself across the continent, the band has unveiled the second single off [...]
No, that's not an Emeril quote...Daptone Records really never does slow down! The Brooklyn Academy of Music has just made an announcement about TAKEOVER, an event curated by Sufjan Stevens that features a whole lot of Daptone music. Both the Afrobeat-funk connoisseurs the Budos Band and gospel-singer extraordinaires Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens (accompanied [...]

Menahan Street Band: Home Again! From Make the Road By Walking (Dunham/Daptone, forthcoming 10/14/08) This has to be one of my favorite songs I've heard all summer, a beautiful mid-tempo ballad off the new Menahan Street Band. The MSB is the brain child of Tom "TNT" Brenneck, the guitarist for the Dap-Kings and a rising songwriter/producer from within the Daptone's deep camp. I wrote about MSB last fall after their single, "Make the Road By Walking" was sampled for Jay-Z's "Roc Boys" and I've been eagerly awaiting the release of [...]

MUSIC : "Choice Of Colors" --- The Impressions (zShare) "Choice Of Colors" --- The Impressions (savefile) "My Deceiving Heart" --- The Impressions (zShare) "My Deceiving Heart" --- The Impressions (savefile) In addition to being blessed with an uncanny and seemingly supernatural ability to reflect the times during which he lived, Curtis Mayfield 's awe-inspiring music has also extended a wealthy inheritance to the soul children of the new millenium. While it may be difficult for younger listening [...]
Central Park's SummerStage may have finished last week, the McCarren Park Pool may be over, and while that may herald the end of the free show season, it does not indicate a dearth of good live music. In fact, it means anything but. Here are just a couple for the next month or so. Naomi Shelton. [...]
Central Park's SummerStage is definitely one of the premier events of the season in New York, and Daptone Records is quickly becoming one of the city's premier labels, so what better way to celebrate both by having Daptone close out the venerable series with a good old-fashioned revue (even better: it's totally free)!? Sunday, August [...]
If you remember Jay-Z's "Roc Boys" you'll be familiar with the trumpets and beats from the sample on that song. Turns out that sample is the song "Make the Road by Walking" by Brooklyn's Menahan Street Band, one of the many projects of Thomas Brenneck, best known as the guitarist for the Dap-Kings, the Budos Band, and Amy Winehouse. MSB are releasing their debut album on October 14 on Brenneck's

I don't claim to know a ton when it comes to the soul/funk/jazz arena. I leave it for folks like O-Dub , Funky 16 Corners or Scholar at Souled On . But I know when something moves me ... or, more appropriately, makes me move. That's been the case with the Menahan Street Band , whose forthcoming album, Make the Road By Walking (out Oct. 14), has captured my attention. Like most people, my introduction came in a somewhat backward manner. The title track to the album is the [...]
Menahan Street Band "Home Again!" - When I was young and growing up in the Hudson Valley, I listened to a lot of radio from New York City. In part, this was because I didn't really have many other options -- all of the local tv and radio stations were in fact the New York City stations. All of the media was focused on the city and so I became fascinated with this place that was so close, but so completely different from where I lived. I suppose I picked up on the notion that interesting [...]
Great news! The incomparable Sharon Jones will play at Central Park SummerStage this summer. The soul funk diva has been touring all spring and summer throughout the world with her Dap-Kings in support of last year's much acclaimed, Motown infused 100 Days, 100 Nights. The Soul Sister #1 will be back in her adoptive city [...]

Monday, July 14, 2008 Just so you know, Sarah did well at tryouts on Saturday and made the cut. All she has to do now to be able to officially call herself a rollergirl is complete a whopping 90 days of TXRD training. Cross your fingers! OK, I have a lot of upcoming things that I could share today, but instead of any of that I'm going the way of semi-new so that I can ramble about the Menahan Street Band. [...]
You’ve heard the hook before â€" the staccato eighth notes, the warm horn swells, the cry of “speech.†It’s the opening to Rolling Stone’s number one song of 2007, Jay-Z’s “Roc Boys (And The Winner Is).†But those trumpets aren’t coming from some obscure 70s soul sample. Instead, Hova’s production team looked a bit closer [...]
