I don't know whether I had heard Avalanche by Folks some time ago, clocked it as a great song, and subsequently completely forgotten about them, or whether the wave of familiarity and quality I was struck with was purely down to the brilliance of the track. I hope it was the latter, but really, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that Folks are yet another fearsomely talented act from Manchester. Yes, the same Manchester that gave us Wu Lyf, Secret Pilot etc etc etc. The one band that may be of note however is Oasis, specifically Noel [...]
Tweet vaso link This video is just an excuse to listen to this song. The video means nothing. I suggest you just close your eyes and appreciate the simple brilliance of Menomena-inspired hip hop. ScHoolboy Q is an affiliate of the esteemed Kendrick Lamar. They are both members of the so-called Black Hippy. Mr. Q has three previous releases to his name. His most recent, Habits and Contradictions , was independently released earlier this month. I can't recommend it enough. But the song that really [...]

Portland-band, Lost Lander , has caught my ear in a bear trap called fusion. "What type of fusion?", you may ask. "What the hell does that mean?" you will more likely ask. Well... I suppose it means they've got my attention and aren't letting go. Lost Lander fuses the sounds of Fleet Foxes , Broken Bells and a whole lot of their own flavor. Matt Sheehy has done his share of solo work, as well as work the band Ramona Falls , formerly Menomena (previously featured on MTIB), but for whatever reason this [...]

BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]

Rare Monk resemble a mix of Celtic punk, avant-garde rock in the vein of Man Man, and southern gypsy-pop complete with quick-moving strings and snarling vocals. For a more concise comparison, think Modest Mouse with an extra shot of caffeine

I figured with my previous show being devoted to songs that remind me of sleep, this one would be the opposite. After a few bouts of standard indie rock, things got thick and loud. A shout out to my buddy Brett, for tuning in from Sedro-Woolley. Next time I'll have to add Tullycraft to the list in honor of how we met. The show began with a song off one of my desert island top 5 albums, and ended with a track that's nearly thirty years old. [...]

I thought Lost Lander 's "Cold Feet" sounded familiar. The song appeared on this year's PDX Pop Now! compilation. But there's more. Lost Lander is the new band of Matt Sheehy and Brent Knopf (Ramona Falls, Menomena). "Cold Feet" has the sound f Knopf's other band and his prior band, though a bit more restrained and calculated. Lots of vocal harmonies, precise percussion and intense instrumentation. The song is off the band's debut release, DRRT , out in January. That makes [...]

Words by Jacob Barron Last year was the first complete year of soundtracking and yea, our earth continued to spin, and we are hence blessed to find ourselves faced with yet another autumn. The same pile of leaves that you raked up last year will soon form in your backyards and the same bittersweet feeling you had last year will seep into your listening, or at least it should. That feeling of happy sadness goes along with autumn as it does with indie rock, since that sort of ambiguity is what fuels a great [...]

NPR is streaming ' Muppets: The Green Album ' a collection of Muppets tunes featuring contributions from Andrew Bird, My Morning Jacket, Weezer, OK Go and Rachel Yamagata. The only beef? Instead of The Fray covering "Mahna Mahna" the album producers should have gotten Menomena, whose band name was inspired by the Muppet's song. Tweet
How did you celebrate July 4th? On a rooftop BBQ listening to our summer mix ? Maybe you stayed in and watched old episodes of Hoarders on Roku? Maybe I stayed in and did that. There is no way to know. But all across this great country we do know there were fireworks to be seen and Beyonce to be heard singing "God Bless America" live on TV. Via the magic of Twitter we also know some of our favorite musicians spent the day overeating, overdrinking, watching Independence Day , and in two cases, [...]

Today's delivery is brought to you by Menomena . You may have recently noticed we picked up the Indie Sabbath feature which is written by our new contributor, Ronnie. It has been a huge success and not just on the website itself. Ronnie has personally turned a lot of us onto music we may not had heard before and has really opened alot of ears and eyes. So, he recently turned me on to this group Menomena who hail from Portland, Oregon. They've got a sound you might expect coming from Portland but they do it so [...]

One of the world's most isolated land masses is home to one of the better venues I've visited. Next Door , nested in the heart of Honolulu's lounge district, offers a wide range of touring and local acts, attracting an equally diverse group of music fans. As one native told me, "Really amazing bands pass through here. I've been way too stoked to see Menomena ." Opening the evening were two Hawaiian acts. Clones of the Queen enamored our ears with atonal electronic waves in the vein of Bjork. Stephen Augstin [...]

Our lovely friend Cherilyn MacNeil aka Dear Reader is finally back. Two years have gone by since her depute album " Replace Why With Funny " came out, but Cherilyn has been quite busy. She moved from her hometown Johannesburg to Berlin, her band mate Darryl Torr left the band, she kept on making music and now her new album will be out on September 2. Brent Knopf ex member of the band Menomena and now Ramona Falls is the producer, " Idealistic Animals " is the title and different kind [...]

Menomena — Sepia Menomena , a band near and dear to my heart, has done the right thing and given their '03 masterwork I Am the Fun Blame Monster! a deluxe reissue. While the album still sports the same lovably juvenile artwork (see above), it packs a whopping 9 extra bonus tracks and a retrospective DVD. Above you can hear "Sepia", a quietly epic brooder that has robo-drummer Danny Seim firing on all cylinders. [...]
Friday, May 20, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: If you do anything tonight it should consist of rolling down to the Mohawk for the Midgetmen's 9th Anniversary and CD Release Show. La Snacks are opening, the Sour Notes are headlining the inside stage, and I'll be there passing out high fives. Why would you ever consider missing it? Tix are a measly $8. Doors are at 8pm. See you there. Music! Enjoy. : Ty Segall - You Make [...]
