Last year's Menomena album Moms was a bit of a late discovery for us, but it has been a record we've been listening to solidly since then. So we're a bit quicker off the mark with this, their new single called Toomer , the lyrical meaning is clear, " I'm a cancer/you're a tumor " as they carry over their themes of disease, despair and suffering from the album. It is out digitally now. Follow @madmackerel

photo by Dave Lichterman Summer may be a ways away, but for Divine Fits , anytime is a good time to go for a dip in the pool... as long as you're fully clothed. The supergroup's latest video for the synthy "My Love is Real" finds them diving into swimming pools in suburban backyards and jumping through hedges. Their debut album, 20122s A Thing Called Divine Fits , is certainly worth a listen, and you can catch them on tour this winter, too. [...]
Menomena's new single is a fractured and chopped up bit of ambience that reminds me just a bit of Mac Demarco , if he were ever to put down his guitar produce an electronic track. "Toomer" is leftover from the sessions which birthed Moms , holds its own as a single quite well. Stream it below. Menomena say it's not a "Toomer". Menomena will release a double A-side single, featuring the tracks "Toomer" and "Banyon" , recorded during sessions for their latest album, Moms. Check out the new song, "Toomer", below. Tour Dates: 2/12 - The Mill - Iowa City, IA # 2/13 [...]

The new single "Toomer" from Portland, OR duo Menomena . Available now at digital retailers everywhere with drummer Danny Seim taking over the vocals

Just months after the release of the highly-personal Moms , Portland indie rockers Menomena return with "Toomer", a single plucked off the cutting room floor. The track's shimmery, wah-wah guitar work and driving percussion radiate a similar musical intensity, while the succinct hook ("I'm a cancer / You're a tumor") neatly expands upon the concepts of death and isolation. Stream it below. "Toomer" b/w "Banyon" is out now via Barsuk Records. The band will continue to tour behind [...]
Last year, the tricky Portland indie-poppers Menomena released Moms , their first album as a duo, and handily showed off that they'd be just as able to crank out melodically dizzy tunes with just two dudes. But there's more where that came from. The dizzy and ephemeral new song "Toomer" comes from the Moms sessions, but it didn't appear on the album for whatever reason, even though it's definitely good enough to make the cut. So now it's a single instead. Listen to it below. Read More...

"Plumage" where Menomena shows us their forms of plumage. "Plumage" is off of Menomena's fifth album, Moms. A boat captain, fisherman, alcoholic IQ man with a bloody nose from probably doing a lot of blow, snipers, free-lifting army soldier..it's great.
It's so unfeasibly unheard of for a support act to upstage their supposed superiors of any given gig, though Leah Pritchard's Empty Pools indubitably did so when they played second fiddle to Menomena late on last year . They blew 'em clean out the water then and this morning their forthcoming double-sider – due March 11th on Battle Worldwide Recordings – has gone one better by providing two further wholly immersive experiences. Its prioritised side, Small Talk, proves as impactive now and on record as it did then and live: Pritchard's vocal [...]
Louis CK - Word Recorded in 2010, Louis CK's Word was used in bits and pieces in those cutaway comedy scenes in Louie. As such, it suffered a bit because you've probably heard some of this before. But it's such strong material delivered by such a great performer that it's hardly a detriment at all. [...]
Favorite Songs of 2012: Part 2 (50-1) You will have to take these list rankings with a grain of salt, because although I tried my best to accurately arrange the tracks, I change it every time I listen to one of the songs. I also only included my favorite song from each artist, so there are no doubles (except for I think one person, but they were part of two different groups). A few songs are also technically from before 2012, but they all appear on albums or [...]

Say goodbye to 2012 with our end of the year mix. It's up for the week and that's it. Thanks for all of the support in 2012. Music to Combat Commuting Doldrums 2012 [ mp3 ] [...]
Here I am, left to go last once again with my favorite songs of the year. I feel as though I listened to more in 2012 than in any other year, and my musical experience was all the better for it. More music means more candidates, which admittedly makes lists like this one tougher. But [...]

My top ten for the year, with a brief explanation/comment. Enjoy & Happy New Year! ...... 1. Grizzly Bear – Shields The guys in Grizzly Bear killing it, once again. This record is almost perfect. The compositions are strange & beautiful, and they complement the haunting singing styles of Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen. If you didn’t get this album – you missed (but there's still time!). Check Out: Yet Again [mp3] [...]

Clif's top ten list for 2012 with twenty others receiving honorable mention: 10. Cat Meat – Cat Meat We previewed Cat Meat’s self-titled debut as a Friday Free Feature on November 9, and it’s been in constant rotation between my iPod and car stereo. A complex, experimental alt. country/folk album that claims influences such as Wilco, Sparklehorse and Califone; the classic psychedelic experimenalist, Captain Beefheart; and the legendary bluesmen Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie McTell. When you listen, they’re all there in subtle drips, drabs and dollops. [...]
2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]

My last post was about the concept of taste, good and bad and how can that possibly really be defined. So I'm here to define my taste for you for 2012. These are my favourite albums of 2012. The ones that drilled into my heart and brain. They have variances in style but I guess they are mainly rock based with crucially plenty of melody, heart and emotion and hopefully originality. 2012 seemed like a good year for music. Probably quiet to start but strong to finish. Especially that week in September that hit like a cyclone. In one remarkable [...]
