1. Menomena - My My - First, let's all thank Barsuk Records for sending me this advance copy of the forthcoming record Friend and Foe (due 1/27/07). Without their help, I wouldn't have this quirkybeautiful collection of songs for another month. I'm pretty sure this song will be around on my best of 2007 lists in another 11 months. [from Friend and Foe | pre-order ] 2. The Acorn - Dents - Yes, I did a piece on the Acorn last week, but [...]
Well, we're in the last few days of 2006 and many are already beginning to look forward to next year in music. What's in store for 2007 you may ask? I've made a schedule of sorts of albums that are being released in 2007 (or are being projected to be released) that I'm looking forward to. It's a understatement to say that it looks like it's going to be a great year for music. If I have a single/demo/live song from the album I've included it as an MP3 download. I'm going on a cruise this week [...]

With piano, drums, guitars, bells, and even multiple vocalists, this gem from Portland's Menomena somehow manages to sound both large and minimal at the same time. The classic tension/release dynamic is also well utilized, giving the track an irresistable appeal. And despite it's quirky art-school feel, the song has a catchy pop charm that will definitely make it appealing to a wide audience. As well as appearing on an EP by the same name, which is currently available on Film Guerrero , "Wet and Rusting" will be featured on Menomena's upcoming [...]

1. Gotye - Heart's a Mess - This strangely-named and talented artist is shrouded in weird mystery. Something feels antique about his recordings, they don't sound like they were made in the last 10 years. This one is vaguely tribal, a chilling reverb hiding behind the vocals, and slowly burns to a fabulous climax. And who doesn't love those? [from Like Drawing Blood | buy ] 2. Chet Baker - I Get Along Without You Very Well - Oh Chet, you can do no wrong. This [...]

Tonight's loaded with solid lineups. Tonight's Pick: The Little Ones / Small Sins @ the Echo ($10) – For the indie pop fans. Later today I plan to release my top 10 list for local bands. The Little Ones are very high on that list. I wrote a lot more about them there. This is their homecoming show and the last night of their tour with Small Sins. Also Appearing: The Morlocks / The Superbees @ Safari Sam's [...]

Hi, I'm Chris from gorilla vs. bear . So, Kevin is up in Flagstaff for some reason, probably becoming one with nature or whatever those hippies do up there. So I guess I can stop playing with my Wii (get it? ha.) long enough to take over So Much Silence and post some songs that hopefully you guys won't hate too much. Kevin asked that I post a photo of men in a [...]

Midlake will be here in Sydney in six days, very excited about that, now on top of that i was happy to hear the 2001 EP Milkmaid Grand Army recently. Self released and only selling 1000 copies, it now sees the light of day after the band's success in the past couple of years. Closer to the eccentricity of "Bamnan and Slivercork" then the lush sounds of "The Trials of Van Occupanther" it nonetheless shows off the prodigious talent of the Denton, Texas pop masters. Here is the first track off the re-release. [...]

With only one release from a veteran band ( The Long Winters' Putting the Days to Bed ), Seattle super indie Barsuk Records used 2006 as a showcase for its newest roster acquisitions. There were seven releases by 'new' artists in 2006, most of which were by acts who had already established themselves on smaller labels ( Rocky Votolato , Mates of State , Viva Voce ). The three true newcomers to the national scene were teen duo Smoosh [...]

"Welcome to the world," says Portland's Menomena. (See left.) Menomena's debut album, I Am The Fun Blame Monster (can you say anagram?), featured a flip-book as an integral part of its album artwork. (I mean, how do you beat that?). In the words of Dyanu, "It would have been enough." But beyond masterful packaging feats, Menomena put forth a flip-book with the accompaniment of an entire album-worth of indie-pop piano-bass-drums coolness. Sure the second album was only three tracks long and instrumental, but hey, when you're described as an experiemental rock trio, why not do whatever the fuck you feel like? [...]

Son of a gun. I know this site isn't that popular. Either that, or I have a bunch of secret visitors I don't know about. Either way, option #2 as far as free file hosting was tapped as well. December 1st it'll reset and all shall be well, but until then, I guess I'll just find songs streamed from band's websites and stuff. Those are never the best songs, but can't do much about it currently. But turkey day was last weekend, and mine wasn't too special, just the usual, but for my dad's [...]

Son of a BITCH. I'm nearly all better now but that was one killer illness I had last week. Thanks to all of you guys who wished me well, it was appreciated. And sorry for the absence, I just couldn't really even look at a computer. Couldn't type, didn't feel well enough to listen to music, or anything. It was a dark time. Now, thanks to the miracles of modern medicine, I'm feeling better. Mo' better well enough to bring back the sweet goodness that happens when EAR FARM takes a look at [...]

Daydreams of Patagonia , red meat and the beautiful rhythms of incomprehensible Spanish; the only thing stopping me from wishing that this year would end however, is the knowledge that there'll be another one starting in it's place. mp3: Wet and Rusting website: http://www.menomena.com I love Menomena at the moment. It's a big musical crush actually. Sure, I only caught the end of the I Am the Fun Blame Monster! buzz in 2003/2004 when some nice people I know were listing it as an end of year favourite. But I was right in there for Under An Hour , the pretty instrumental triptych recorded in collaboration with Portland dance group Monster Squad. I'm listening to that [...]

Menomena will be releasing their third album Friend and Foe on Barsuk Records on January 23rd, 2007 (they signed back in August). The experimental rock band consists of Brent Knopf on guitar, keyboards and glockenspiel, Justin harris on bass, guitar, baritone sax and alto sax, and Danny Seim on percussion, with all three doing a bit of singing. You can't fault these guys for not being expansive at least. You can download one of their new songs, "Wet And Rusting," below. It's a slightly odd song, a mish mash [...]

MP3: MENOMENA "Wet and Rusting" ( Barsuk ) The accessibly experimental indie pop band Menomena make their Barsuk debut after releasing two albums on the small label Film Guerrero in their hometown of Portland, OR. They create pleasant melodies with incredibly crafty structuring on this track from the album, Friend and Foe , out early next year. Every shift within the song is unexpected but completely unjarring. tags: music | mp3 | [...]
