In March 2010, Big Star' s Jody Stephens honored late band mate Alex Chilton with an impromptu all-star performance of the band's 1978 classic, Third (later Sister Lovers ), during South by Southwest. Later that year, Stephens unearthed the album's original scores and began staging a handful of shows across the country, featuring a shifting lineup of performers and singers, along with a full orchestra. Now, the project has announced two new performances for Chicago (June 28th) and New York City (June 30th). Stephens will be on skins for both outings and [...]
It's been a long weekend. I'm gonna go watch Game of Thrones and then hit the sack. In case you were wondering, I only got a couple of the RSD exclusives I was hoping to find, including the Chelsea Wolfe 73 (apparently no one in Silverlake likes her, as we still have 2 of the [...]

Yes, this Saturday is 4/20, but if you can detach yourself from the bucket bong, it's also Record Store Day. The annual celebration of independent record stores has grown into quite an industry, and as ever, there's a heap of awesome-looking releases to trawl through once you've fought your way through the crowds and thrown enough judicious elbows to make your ways to the crates of vinyl — so much so, in fact, that the selection can be somewhat overwhelming. Never fear, though, because we've sifted through the list of this year's RSD exclusives to [...]
Church music... - by Benjamin Bland
You'll need no such inherently petrifying medical equipment to jack up the pulse next Thursday, 4th April other than Michael Gira and Swans' inaugural Mouth To Mouth shindig, that's for sure. Taking place from five in the afternoon 'til the evening ticks on over into Friday, the NYC stalwarts' primary grumbler is to bring an itself electrifying line up to north London for the first night of 'an annual series of musical events curated by M. Gira/ Swans around the world concentrating on urgent performance-orientated music, irrespective of arbitrary genres or styles.' Sounds precisely what [...]

Fabulous freaks The Flaming Lips announced recently that they were planning to re-release their quadrophonic musical experiment Zaireeka (originally to be purchased as four albums, and played - impractically and simultaneously - on four units) for Record Store Day 2013. Which reminded me: a) Wayne Coyne and t'Flips havealways been wonderfully bonkers, it's not a new thing and b) all big experiments start with smaller ones. In this case, the concept for Zaireeka seemed to start out in Oklahoma parking lots. Fast forward backward to [...]

2013 is quickly become the year of the guitar. The year many of us had hoped would come. Paul Dillon is not new to music and his credentials speak for themselves-having played with Mercury Rev, Longwave and Sparklehorse. His first ten songs under the Miracle Falls moniker, known as the Debasement Tapes , range from Loveless- worship to golden grunge-pop in the vein of Teenage Fanclub. According to Dillon he will have another release coming in the Fall, but for now enjoy three of [...]

Swans are set to curate the first in a series of one-day festivals at Koko in London. The first outing will take place on 4 April 2013, with Swans being joined on the bill by Xiu-Xiu , Mercury Rev Tettix Experiment and Ben Frost . Tickets are available here , with more acts to be announced. Swans' Michael Gira told The Quietus : "This is the [...]
[Photos courtesy of Dana (distortion) Yavin. See more of her excellent work HERE .] Here at NYCTaper, we have a special place in our hearts for Dinosaur Jr . Not only do they make outstanding music and have chops second to none but they have long supported the taping community, making several appearances on this website including one of the first recordings posted here . We were particularly ecstatic when the original lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited in 2005 and have since released three superb albums. In the interim, we have [...]
Lonerism finds Australia’s Tame Impala subtly evolving their sound and avoiding repetition.

I was going through my music directory and went, hey, Mercury Rev! I remember they have some good songs (since why else would I keep them around?) and start digging to find the gold. It's actually their most popular song, but we'll say I was digging really hard anyway! It's as catchy as STDs at a brothel when you have coupons, and just makes me wonder, where the heck is this goddess off to? Unfortunately, the song does not answer this question! Fortunately, it does not reduce my enjoyment of it one bit. Goddess On A [...]
Holy fuck this is what an epic song sounds like! After all these years Swans prove once again why they are one of the greatest with " Mother Of This World ." Sure I could spend the next hour explaining how important Swans are, if you don't already know Google them it's going to save us both some time, instead I'm going to make this little post as short as possible so I can listen to this track on repeat uninterrupted for the next hour. There are songs that [...]

When we first introduced Conveyor nearly a year ago, it seemed as if the band was in transition: on their debut EP, happy-go-lucky tunes with thick instrumentation like “Sun Ray” sat alongside more chilled tracks like “Foreword” , a song so serene it bordered on being slowcore. The mix of styles could easily have been put down to growing pains, with Conveyor getting used to being a four piece band rather than the keyboard duo they once were. Now, with the release of their self-titled [...]
Estaba equivocado. Veamos [...]

PRIMAVERA SOUND W PORTO | WSTĘP + DZIEŃ 1. | DZIEŃ 2. | DNI 3. i 4. Gdyby PS była korporacją dostęp do - w miarę festowych możliwości - komfortowego odbioru muzyki byłby jednym z jej filarów, sztandarową policy, hasłem [...]

We made it through another week and here we are, Friday afternoon. This weeks Friday Flashback Track takes us back to 1991 debut LP, Yerself Is Steam, from Mercury Rev. This is Frittering. Enjoy.
