The picture you see above is my unused ticket to see The White Stripes last night. Unused because I have spent the last two days puking my guts up and emptying my bowels out. Not nice to say the least. Whether it was a bug or food poisoning, I don't know. What I do know is that it was enough to stop me from seeing Jack and Meg which i am gutted about. Currently I'm feeling about 67% better. Just very low on energy and strength. However, it isn't going to [...]
Folks not familiar with Buffalo, NY-spawned Mercury Rev 's back catalog may be surprised to learn that they once could almost out-Flaming Lips the Flaming Lips . And that at one point guitarist Jonathan Donahue played with the Lips; Rev bassist Dave Fridmann of course has recorded the Lips many times. The Allmusic entry for Mercury Rev is full of other revelations and we recommend reading it. We turned onto Mercury Rev, and this song in particular, long before we became Flaming Lips fans. We were in the brand-new-at-the-time studios of Bucknell University's radio [...]

First off, I want to give big ups to the very generous individuals that donated money to East Village Radio on behalf of my radio show, Sandy Acres Sound Lab. Thank you for your donations. Without you, I am nothing: Matt @ BrandSpankin ! FiL @ PogoAGogo ! John @ CityState ! Warren @ Drawer ! Angelina P in NYC! Bradley M in Evanston, IL! Janet B in Boise! Ion in San Diego! Treat your first post as if it's your last. SkinnySlim told me this once, with great conviction, as he lay in my hallway, the blood from the axe-wound puddling beneath his Kangol. Anyhoo, to go along with the general spirit of ass-backwardness with which my stint at 'Stamps will be undertaken, let's start things off with a song of parting. Some say The Proclaimers are a one-hit wonder. To them I say: Dude, stop bleeding in my hallway...

The release of Deserter's Songs back in 1998 probably marked the start of my interest in alternative music, before that I thought the musical world revolved around Blur, Oasis, and whatever DJ was flavour of the month at the time. The album is still one of my true favourites, with Opus 40, Holes, Tonite It Shows and the tub-thumping Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp all still getting frequent plays. I'm not sure they ever topped Deserter's Songs for me, their other albums are great but don't tug at the heart strings quite as effectively as [...]

I've wanted a tattoo since I was in high school. I came up with new ideas every month, desperately searching for the perfect image to get emblazoned on my skin. I never got anything, though, because despite my longing to decorate my body with ink, I knew that I hadn't come across anything that I thought would mean as much to me in my later life as it did in my youth. When I went to Greece in June/July, I was fulfilling another long-surviving desire. I'd wanted to go to Greece for at least the past year, but [...]
Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be) - Sly & The Family Stone If You Want Me To Stay - Mercury Rev Music MP3 music

Ok, am back. ezarchive is too bad so I followed kwaya na kisser advice and went to fileXoom . So to catch up for last week and the overall disruption, there will be several posts this week. First, Mercury Rev . Saw they just released a "Best of". Hate "Best Of's". Because great songs are always missing, like Spiders and Flies. Not entirely sure where this version is coming from, most probably Black Session. MP3: Spiders and Flies (Live Black Session) Buy: Deserter's [...]

Welcome to another edition of "Please Release Me," in which your Idolators request--nay beg --that an out-of-print, delayed or held-up-in-customs album be issued stateside: Artist: Mercury Rev Hometown: Buffalo, NY Album: See You On The Other Side What is it? : The third album from this ever-evolving psych-space-pop outfit is tricked-out and trippy--strings, horns, flutes and everything else are jammed together, often on the same song--but never inaccessible: "Sudden Ray Of Hope" streamlines cooing soft-rock sanguinity with guitar squonk, while the seven-and-a-half [...]

The Gallagher brothers of Oasis provide a "World Exclusive!" to Uncut , sharing who knows what exciting "stories behind their greatest songs". It must have been burning at those poor lads, having held in all these stories for so long, just waiting for the right moment to tell them. Now at last Noel can tell the world that the title of "The Importance Of Being Idle" comes from the title of the book, The Importance Of Being Idle . "It's also one of my personal favourites," he says of the song. And now you [...]
Song of the Day - 10/5/06 You could say I've been having a bit of a phase lately. No, it's not some new indie band or anything like that, but rather with dream pop. Dream pop (shoegazing) is best characterized by bands like Low, Luna, Mazzy Star and one of my new favorites, Mercury Rev. From what I can gather, Mercury Rev was a changing lineup of extremely talented musicians. Consisting of players like [...]

I have about as much trouble liking Mercury Rev as I do disliking them. I saw them perform at Coachella in 2005. They went on late and played well past their time. I was trying my best to get as angry as I could that they were holding up Spoon , who were scheduled to finish out the night. But when "Holes" came on and lead singer, Jonathan Donahue, belted out the sweeping ballad in a manner that would not be out of place for a conductor for an all-transvestite orchestra, I couldn't help but suspend any [...]

It is very odd to me that Mercury Rev doesn't enjoy as much success as some of their contemporaries especially at their home country of the United States. They are often compared to one of my favorite bands The Flaming Lips in sound, you can call it a mix of dream pop and psychedelic rock in a modern sense. The Flaming Lips had actually shared Jonathan Donahue who appeared as guitarist on two Flaming Lips albums, In a Priest Driven Ambulance and Hit to Death in the Future Head . More importantly the Flaming Lips' long [...]

As promised, here's my second Peel Session for the day, this time from Mercury Rev. The session was recorded on the 11th October 2001 and broadcast on the 15th November that same year. It was the band's last session for Peel (of 5). Four of the songs are from their fifth album, All Is Dream , which was released on September 11th 2001. Planet Caravan is a Black Sabbath song, Gymnopedie 3 is by Erik Satie. That's all for now, hope everyone reading has a good weekend! Mercury Rev - [...]

I feel a little bleurgh today. I'm all out of sorts. Combination of simulated violence in the morning mixing with an overindulgence of the alcoholic kind last night. But as we ended up in some horrible stag do cattle market of a club last night, I felt that drinking far too much was the only way to cope with the surroundings. It certainly numbed the pain of being in the kind of place I would rather not be, listening to the kind of music I'd rather not have to. So forgive me if this [...]
Not that Mercury Rev need much of an introduction but there was life in this band before ‘Deserter's Songs’. A pretty turbulent one too it has to be said as drugs, internal feuds and lack of recognition meant that ‘Holes’ et al may never have seen the light of day. Reputably formed after its various members met in a psychiatric hospital Mercury Rev released an uneven joy in 1993 called ‘Boces’.
