'Out For Blood' is a surprising gem. The opening bars are sincere and simple but the simplicity eventually breaks down into terrority you would never expect. Intricate guitar lines drop in, solo vocals grow into choruses, drums open up and gather space... there's alot going on under the bonnet. 'Out For Blood' is the creation of Colorado's James Cooley, a 23 year old solo artist who records under the moniker Mesita . James is currently working on the next Mesita album 'Coyote' due in the coming months. Download audio file (Mesita-Out-For-Blood.mp3) [...]

I'm not much of a Folkie, so a lot of the subtleties of the genre are lost on me. But every now and then, a Folk project just sounds "right," like the songs really did need to be written in an abandoned church in the woods. Microphones - The Glow Pt 2 grabbed me this way, and it sounds like Phil Elvrum is a major influence for Mesita, at least for A Million Shades of Sky. The long-form song structure, guitar vamp, subtle arrangements all nod to Elvrum, but Mesita isn't afraid to layer in a synth or drum break [...]

Mesita's " The Coyotes " was an instant favorite. Multi-instrumentali st James Cooley creates his music DIY style, but you wouldn't know it by listening. The music is a fully-realized concoction of pointed sounds that come together like a small army. It's not aggressive or overly electronic, but this homemade indie rock certainly isn't your usual hushed and muffled blob of singularity. We're honored to premiere a second track from his upcoming album The Coyote . This song is from an album that I'm working on called The Coyote. It'll be 15 tracks long or so, and will be out in a [...]

As I turn my ears towards more wintery fare (because it's finally not 60 in NYC anymore), I find myself enthralled with 23-year-old James Cooley's Mesita project. I'm looking mightily forward to his upcoming LP The Coyote , due out sometime in the early months of 2012 (Happy New Year, by the way!). I missed the boat on their 2011 LP Here's To Nowhere (digging through it now, you should too ) but I'm well caught up on their 2012 plans, starting with the fantastic new-ish track "On [...]

Mesita - The Coyotes Like the blanket of snow depicted here on the mountainous album art from his home state Colorado, James Cooley ’s music has the soft comfort of looking out the misty window of warm winter cabin. I n my imagination, he’s trapped inside with four-foot drifts blocking the door, echoing the acoustics of a dampened dry crystalline snow of the Rocky Mountain west. This is the lead single from his upcoming album The Coyote , to be released early 2012. Get the track free from his Sndcld .

James Cooley is a 23-year-old from Colorado. He goes by Mesita. Acts that balance on the shoulder of one man (or woman) often reflect that singularity, but that's not the case here. Cooley adds body to his music, opting out of the "I'm alone in my basement making a song on a keyboard" vibe. Layers of vocals over a lush backdrop makes "The Coyotes" sound like the work of a band, full of body but still maintaining a raw, unmistakable indie quality that gives it a bit of a serrated edge. "The Coyotes" is from Mesita's [...]

Following the first single, "On Through The Dark," which was released a couple of weeks ago (and premiered by our good selves ), James Cooley, aka Mesita, has released the second song from his next album. The song's called "The Coyotes" and the album, which should be with us sometime early next year, is to be the non-pluralised version of that: The Coyote . Fitting in with the wintry images now covering Mesita's website, the song's a bit more of a colder affair compared to his sunnier moments from his past releases but there's still [...]

We're always happy to be able to announce more new material from Mesita ; a longtime favorite of all of us at BIRP dating back to his debut full-length Cherry Blossoms in 2008. With that being said, we're even happier when we get to premiere that material ourselves. Such is the case today as we get to offer a first listen at his brand new track The Coyotes . For those [...]
