Over a chequered career history that stems from 1967, right through to their break-up in 1977 due to arguments regarding the way the name of the band was used. A reunion of sorts in 1989 soon followed a renaming of the guard (with two new members added) into the now "The Funky Meters." The Meters exemplified energy, wit & charisma so colourful, that even their patent trumpet blasts have had paintbrushes & stencils named after them. 'Pass The Peas' as this heavyweight illustration of their humour & admiration for the funk and the voice, carries on that love [...]
It may seem like Soulive's ten-show Bowlive III residency at Brooklyn Bowl has just started, but we're nearing the finish line. Last night marked the ninth guest-filled performance for the trio, who welcomed bassist George Porter Jr., Nigel Hall, guitarist Mark Whitfield, vocalist Ledisi, pianist Eldar and The Bowlive Horns to share the stage with them before the show let out. Hall and Alecia Chakour opened the action-packed evening, with HT contributor Wyllys spinning between and after each set. [All Photos by Phrazz ] The NYC-based band kept [...]

On most Thursdays at Brooklyn Bowl, ?uestlove spins the night away during sessions billed as Bowl Train which means a more compressed evening than usual for the concert that leads into The Roots drummer's DJ gig. As was the case last night, where Soulive took the stage early and welcomed a bevy of guests by the time they passed the baton to ?uesto before midnight. Among the many talented musicians joining Soulive at the eighth of ten Bowlive III performances were Medeski Martin and Wood drummer Billy Martin, saxophonist Skerik, singer/songwriter Citizen Cope, Kofi Burbridge, Alice Smith, The [...]
No, this isn't that television show that your father used to watch. For those who haven't seen or heard about this movie, it takes place in beautiful San Francisco and documents the lives of a few couriers. They are on fixed gears riding at extremely high speeds in a very hilly and commonly congested city, so this movie is exciting all of the way through. I'll post a trailer to show what's going on, but damn, the music in this film is great. This movie is a few years old, but like I said, [...]

Editor's Note: This is a repost from last year, or the year before - whatever. Mardi Gras is the final big blowout before the period of fasting and sacrifice called Lent. Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is the end of carnival season and the final day you can indulge in those earthly pleasures we all love so much. Ash Wednesday is next Wednesday. Feel free to party as you please; here's some music to help you on your way. Play 'em loud, play 'em often and play 'em all year [...]
"As long as we stay positive and stick together, we'll probably be doing some more shows, I don't think The Meters will ever stop playing together. The response to that show at The Howlin' Wolf says it all about what people think about The Meters in New Orleans." Yesterday, LMB NOLA got the opportunity to [...]
The Stones weren't the only ones to meet a gin-soaked barroom queen in Memphis - listen to what happened when five other artists did the same thing...
Ruthie Foster's latest is a smoldering gospel kitchen of fire, rain, love, and the Almighty.

Editor's Note : This is a repost of an item we ran a couple of years ago, reappearing here to help get everyone in that Mardi Gras mood. The links have been updated and the Meters are still not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Radio used to be magic. When the stars aligned, and the right artist played the right venue and radio was there, it could be just beautiful. Here's one of those moments: January 1977, at the Showboat Lounge in the Fat City entertainment district of Metairie, which is a suburb [...]

For your Saturday, a movie (including the Movies) and plenty of good shows: ► "Pass the Music," a music documentary filmed between 2008 and '10 focusing on the Silver Lake/Echo Park indie scene, screens for the first time publicly tonight at the Bootleg Theater. Following the 8 p.m. screening, there will be live music from Manhattan Murder Mystery, Tenlons Fort, Joey Siara (of the Henry Clay People), Radars to the Sky and a set saluting the late, great Silver Lake band the Movies. Check out the trailer right here . ► [...]

L.A. reggae band the Aggrolites have been slogging it out Studio One style since the early 2000s, most recently releasing their Rugged Road on Boston label Young Cub. Hot in pursuit of the question of just how a man comes to play reggae in Southern California anyway, we called Jesse Wagner for a few minutes diagnosis. They'll play New Year's Eve at Alex's in Long Beach. This interview by Ron Garmon. Have you ever had a NYE you haven't worked as a musician? That's funny because I was just talking about [...]
The Voodoo Experience is now in the rearview and the relentless fall concert schedule is starting to slow down (although one could easily keep themselves busy on the live circuit until NYE) and therefore it's time to start speculating about the 2012 Jazz Fest lineup. Hard to say who will be at the top of [...]
Scroll to the bottom for a photo gallery from Sunday at Voodoo 2011 My experience since being in New Orleans is that Sundays are an exceptionally treasured day in the city, and this perhaps never rings truer than during the all-too-common special weekends and particularly, during local music festivals. Sunday at Jazz Fest this year [...]
After seeing them doin' their thing once again on Sunday at the Voodoo Experience, it is time to help spread the word. If you frequent this page, thank you, and also you probably are fully aware of The Meters' importance not only to New Orleans music, but to the world of funk at-large. So here [...]
