It wasn't until the mid-'00s that Canadian independent music began to really make waves this side o' the pond. Broken Social Scene – the rather ironically entitled moniker to Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning's all-encompassing collective – had already released three full-lengths, the '05 eponymous third of which picked up umpteen plaudits here as well as being certified Gold over yonder, selling over 50,000 copies. Indeed, the duo's artistically embracive vehicle united members from such esteemed likes as Stars, and Metric, and Leslie Feist, and Reverie Sound Revue, and Do Make Say Think , and so forth. Startling records [...]

Seeing as winter is close at hand here in the Northern Hemisphere, I feel it is high time to talk about an album that was dropped at the beginning of summer. After a nearly three and a half year break from the studio, punchy Canadian foursome Metric has returned with Synthetica , an 11-track step towards what seems like the ultimate explosion of new-wave psychedelia meets haunting indie eloquence. When I first tuned in to Synthetica, it seemed to buck up tell me outright that [...]

Verse Metrics , a Glaswegian quartet, have released their moody EP, Radians today. A five-song EP, it traverses indie post-punk well with clacking rhythms and slow guitar melodies that feel like Interpol threw them out for the bums to fight over. Now, Verse Metrics does this with some class - don't let me call them bums. They shine in certain spots, where in others, they just sound like Mogwai b-sides. The guitar-only bit that builds in "Aches" is incendiary, and you can download the single from their [...]

Last week we bought your our review of Radians, the new EP from Scottish rocksters Verse Metrics. Within said review we praised the " expansive, atmospheric five tracks " and declared the EP as " the work of a band that ask for your full and undivided emotional attention." Well, now you no longer have to take our word for it as we're very pleased to bring you an exclusive stream of the EP in full here on GFP. It's only going to be available until 5pm tomorrow, so [...]

Radians by Verse Metrics Words by Dan Carson Scottish music is without doubt the deviant, troubled child in the Home Nations family; the one that gets high, doesn’t call home and tells mum to piss off in the morning. From Primal Scream to The Twilight Sad; they’ve all stayed true to themselves and made emotionally raw, often self-destructive but always poignant and beautiful records. That balance is the key because Scottish music thrives on intelligent angst. Glasgow four piece Verse Metrics release their new EP [...]

"Born in '82, I grew up with cassette tapes and compact discs. I mainly remember playing CDs as somehow, even when I was very young, I knew cassette tapes were rubbish (in the same way we all knew Minidiscs were rubbish when they made their brief interruption into our musical lives). My early memories of vinyl involves only 2 records – Eddie Grant's “Electric Avenue” and Sex Pistols' “Something Else.” These were the only vinyl records I was allowed to play when I was younger as they were unwanted Christmas presents passed on to me by my Dad. Unfortunately for [...]

Frank Yang It's probably a reach to think that Sloan had some sort of master plan for the past couple years that would pull their career from the respectable but not overly remarkable holding pattern that it'd been in for the past few albums and make them both exciting and relevant again, but that's pretty much what they've managed to do. Their twentieth anniversary as a band last year was kept from being a one-way trip down memory lane thanks to The Double Cross , arguably their best album this century [...]

We're approaching year 15 of Metric, and in that time Emily Haines and company have matured from Canadian soft-rockers with a taste for synthesizers to stadium-calibre headliners. 20092s Fantasies provided the acme of their rise, with a non-stop barrage of radio-ready jams that were capped off by the too-apt "Stadium Love." And now we have Synthetica , the first taste of 'made it' Metric. The singles here ("Youth Without Youth" and "Speed the Collapse") follow the model laid out on Fantasies : big, bombastic pop tracks mastered for speaker stacks. But something seems a bit off elsewhere on [...]
Frank Yang Ideally, I'd have been able to label this one as " Metric covers Neil Young ", given that both acts are in town this week making sure the Air Canada Centre is still hosting some serious Canadiana even with the NHL locked out, but that wouldn't be quite correct. Even though Metric as a full band can officially include the Young-penned classic "Expecting To Fly" in their discography, the track I'm posting predates that by a good five years or so when frontwoman Emily Haines was operating as a solo artist and [...]

Joseph Yarmush It's been interesting to keep up with Montreal's Suuns over the last few years, starting from back in January 20009 when they were still a mostly-unknown outfit calling themselves Zeroes, opening up for Land Of Talk, through their rebranding and 2010 debut Zeroes QC . From the get-go, their intention of melding post-punk, new wave, krautrock, psychedelia, and really any other sound they could conceive of into an occasionally serene but more often discomfitingly danceable brew was clear but the progress they've made at realizing it, measured [...]
