It is a bumper week for Scottish bands on tour internationally this week with 18 bands playing across the world. Highlights include Camera Obscura and A-Lix in South America, Codeine Velvet Club in Romania and the mighty Bis at the Primavera Festival. Vic has more on Bis alongside the full listings below: As a side note, [...]

Through a wash of loose, overdriven guitars and thunderous drums, a thickly accented Glaswegian voice stumbles and allures throughout a landscape of melodies. This is the structure of Frightened Rabbit's third full-length album, The Winter Of Mixed Drinks , eleven songs of ambitious focus and monumental proportions. Each track is a mini-story right down to its charmingly sloppy title. The band's honest and overwhelming journey of sound means there's no shortage of moving drama to fill up the listener's ears as well as penetrate the heart of the listener. You'll find that Frightened Rabbit are [...]

Photography by Jodi Miller It was a beautiful Wednesday evening in mid-April when I, sun slowly but surely settling in for the night off to the west somewhere, found myself lost in my old black beat-em-up pick-em-up 1980 Toyota Pick-Up in the “neck of woods” that I should know by the back of my hand. I’m over-confidence’s bitch tonight, I thought as the clock on my phone was getting uncomfortably close to 8pm, the time I was fucking supposed to be there! I thought right now as I think back to [...]

I'm afraid the gig listings this week are going to be little more than a great steaming post of Toadspam. We've a lot on this week, and I'd hate to think you'd let other people's wonderful creative efforts distract you from the fact that the most important thing you can do this week is give a needy, gin-soaked virtual amphibian a bit of validation. So as such please bear in mind that it is most definitely NOT the This is Music fourth birthday celebrations this Friday, and Meursault are certainly NOT going to go down to Sneaky Pete's [...]

Time again for bit of a Song, by Toad Records and Various Other Bollocks update, because there are several little bits of news in which you may all be interested. No, make that very interested. I'll start with the tour stuff, I think. Meursault get back from their European tour this weekend, and I am generously going to give them about half an hour to rest and recuperate, before getting the lazy fuckers' noses back to the grindstone. They are playing a homecoming gig at next Friday's (21st) This Is Music birthday [...]

Crank Resolutions mp3 Meursault All Creatures Will Make Merry .... buy it Sleet mp3 Meursault's sophomore album, All Creatures Will Make Merry , has carried me away. No, I take that back. It has dragged me away, far away from all the other music in my inbox and on my iphone and in my music library. This is truly the album that we, who are true fans of this band, have been waiting for, and wishing would come sooner to our doorstep. Those of you [...]

From Deep In The Woods by Robin Barber Thee Oh Sees - "I Was Denied" I was denied the title of King of Mud Beach. I was 14 and I was a bully. Mud Beach was a crappy septic lake off a campground where I spent my summers in the "care" of my great uncle Hugh and his caterpillar colonies. I used to wake up with caterpillars on me. One time with one on each eye, I thought I was dead. I used to sit [...]

Meursault God Don't Like it have a free Download of Meursault’s ' Crank Resolutions ' up for grabs. It's taken from their 2nd album “All Creatures will Make Merry” which is due out at the end of May. Wounded Knee I caught Drew aka 'Wounded Knee' last week at the warm up to the Dead Parrots 3rd birthday bash, alongside the ever fabulous RM Hubbert. Both of them put on top performances, so I must admit that I was well chuffed when I stumbled across his newest release, The Ayrtime.Org EP, it's [...]

The scene above shouldn't look unfamiliar if you've been to a music festival at least once in your life. The photo was taken at Russian festival Nashestvie , which attracts 100,000 visitors every year, and proves that you don't have to be stuck in a Scottish summer to know that mud + music = merriment. With the cost of going to a large-scale domestic festival now equivalent to a five-day package holiday in the Canaries, foreign festivals have become a realistic alternative for punters, and not just for financial reasons. For starters, there's often very [...]

The hardest thing about working with a band from Foreign Parts is that there is a bit of a limit to what you can do for them from far away, especially when you're our size. Generally, all the things I can do to help a band out around here - Toad Sessions, tell my friends about them, try and get them written about on blogs or on the radio or on live bills and so on - are much harder if no-one gets the chance to see them and have my general pestering backed up by other people. [...]
