DJ Camilo Lara (above, left), the mastermind behind the Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS, Instituto Mexicano del Sonido), is a hip preservationist of Latin music. With MIS, Lara has found a beautiful connection among cumbia and mariachi and hip hop and rock. He also has a slant in the music business as president of EMI Mexico. His personal collection of vinyl albums is vast and includes works of major influence such as Kraftwerk, The Clash, and Animal Collective. MIS just finished their new album, Politico , which will be released this summer. [...]

Camilo Lara is one of those producers/DJs/artists that is always hustlin' working on something new and never content to rest on his laurels. "El Jefe" is iTunes Mexico's single of the week and the track would rest nicely in a Quentin Tarantino flick. The shag vibe Lara throws is the first off of the forthcoming album from Mexican Institute of Sound titled, "Politico," to be released next year. Mexican Institute of Sound - El Jefe [mp3]
Outside of Rock in Rio , no festival features a more eclectic bill than the Quebec City Summer Festival . Last year, for example, Rammstein, Arcade Fire, and the Black Eyed Peas all played . For the 2011 edition, set to take place July 7-17 across various indoor and outdoor venues in downtown Quebec City, festival organizers have tapped Metallica, Elton John, The Black Keys, Ben Harper, Girl Talk, Death From Above 1979, and John Fogerty. Other confirmed notables include Dropkick Murphys, Omar Souleyman, Cut Copy, M. Ward, Cage the Elephant, Dawes, The [...]

Wake up. Get up. Throw up. Fuck up. But never give up. James Vincent McMorrow - If I Had A Boat ( mp3 ) This extraordinarily vivid slowie comes from Dublin's James Vincent McMorrow, a man who has a superb and long beard to go with his superb and long name. The reverie in question features drums like death knells, Wild West guitar twangs and vocals as intense and raw as a gunshot wound doused in vinegar. Slowly the noise amplifies and increases, before retreating meekly. [There is a video that cannot be [...]
Producer Camilo Lara celebrated Mexico's Bicentennial by crafting a 26-minute composition under his moniker Mexican Institute of Sound . The final piece includes lyrics based on the Mexican constitution and traces the sound of the country from North to South. Today's Top Tune is an excerpt from the Suave Patria EP, called " Educación ."

The second act in the Ozomatli curated Latino Alternativo tent was one of the more outlandish to grace Bonnaroo's mainstage. Wearing t-shirts that read, "Yo Digo Baila Tu Dices Dance," the Mexican Institute of Sound wove bombastic sound collages reminiscent of Projecct Jenny Project Jan's more frantic work. It was a high energy, ridiculous affair - exaggerated actions on stage to match the exaggerated music emanating from the speakers. It was bold, but deservedly so; the complete lack of pretension complemented the trio's self-aware good nature perfectly. They dijeron "baila," and we totally did. [...]

For the first time, EF had a correspondent entrenched in the manic heat of Bonnaroo to report back on the highs and lows of this rural Tennessee institution. Here, contributor Laurie Kamens considers the most over and underrated acts from this year's festival. Billed as a modern-day Woodstock, over 100 bands played this past weekend (June 10-13) in Manchester, TN at the 9th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. The Tennessee farm was packed with over 150,000 heat exhausted hippies, hipsters and frat boys for four days of music, mud, comedy and body odor. [...]

Arizonan (don't hold it against them) duo Calexico will join Ozomatli , Los Super Seven , and The Mexican Institute of Sound for ¡Viva Mexico! and their first performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The concert, part of the KCRW World Festival series, is to honor the bicentennial of Mexico's independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution, neither of which (contrary to the beliefs of tequila lovers everywhere) is celebrated on May 5th. Indeed, the event takes place on September 18th, and will also feature Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles [...]

As first alluded to in our recent interviews with Bonnaroo co-founder Ashley Capps, the Manchester, Tennessee based music festival will look to expand on the success of last year's "Africa!" themed tent by bringing a Latin themed tent to this year's edition. Curated by Tomas Cookman and Amy Blackman-Romero of Cookman International / Nacional Records, "Latino Alternativo" will bring several of the genre's Latin acts to the Bonnaroo farms on Saturday, June 12th. Included to take part are Ozomatli (who will also MC the stage), Los Amigo Invisibles, Aterciopelados, the Mexican Institute [...]

I don't think I've said this, but Happy New Year! I'm eight days late in saying so, but I started thinking about resolutions for the new year. Some have already come to fruition. I've joined a book club! Our first book is "the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay: A Novel " and we meet quarterly. I'm going to stop eating out as much and start cooking more (save tons of money that way). Last, but not least, the very cliche, going to start hitting the gym again. We have an elliptical , but it's stored in the [...]

Mexicans Love Morrissey or so they say, there's definitely a string of emotional pounding in his profound lyricism that we find arousing. Mexican Love Remixing Morrissey too, well, perhaps it's a bit too much of a stretch but Toy Selectah's remix for "When I Last Spoke to Carol" made quite a big buzz around the web. Here is a new awesome remix by the Mexican Institute of Sound and NSM PSM, and it just happens that it's for my favorite track in Years of Refusal . In "Something is Squeezing My Skull" (Mexican Institute of Sound vs NSM PSM [...]
