I've been listening to Mezzanine Owls' "Slingshot Echoes" at least once a day since it arrived in my mailbox. The only word I can think of to describe the sound is "mesmerizing." I hear some Editors, some Silversun Pickups, some Arcade Fire, some Bright Eyes - if you ...

First of all, I want to thank anyone and everyone who came out to the show Saturday night to see the Bridges, Bang Bang Bang, and Chainestereo. There was a great crowd, and the music was simply stellar. We'll do another one in the future, I'm sure. Second of all, I have been collecting a large number of emails from promo companies and labels, and quite frankly, I've been overwhelmed. I haven't had a chance to listen to it all between the holidays, the vacation I took, and being a miserable person in [...]
Hey kids, tonight marks the start of what I hope will become a weekly event. I get some emails that I'd love to post from great folks at various PR companies and record labels, but I can't really post on all of them. I am merely one man, after all. However, I plan on using this format for an infodump of all the pertinent stuff I get. Think of it as a one stop shop for all your info needs. Plus, there's an mp3 at the bottom, so enjoy that as well. First [...]

The uniquely titled Mezzanine Owls hail from the Los Angeles area, embracing their current local scene with atmospherically enjoyable rock songs layered with reverb, effects, and entrancing vocals. The band formed when singer/guitarist Jack Burnside met drummer Pauline Mu through a "drummer wanted" ad in the LA Weekly. The two hit it off and later met keyboarist/guitarist Jonathan Zeitlin through another ad. Fortunately, the three then met bassist Dan Horne through friends and not through ad inquiries, which I imagine became a tiring process after several attempts. With all four in tow, they began to write songs with [...]

Lots going on this coming week beginning tonight with Lavender Diamond and Eleni Mandell at the Getty. Quincy celebrates the release of her new CD Come Closer at Amoeba. And The Muffs headline over at Safari Sam's for another edition of Kiss or Kill... Echo Park Music Festival should be fun over at the lake Saturday and Sunday. Future Pigeon, Listing Ship, and Very Be Careful are just a few of

Elvis Perkins: I don't normally write about up-and-coming musicians that much for one primary reason: most of them aren't very good. This isn't necessarily a knock at other bloggers that seem to keep up a steady drum-beat of hype for a bunch of no-name musicians. But as Jack White says in one of the essays in Chuck Klosterman IV: "Usually when somebody brings up something obscure, I assume its not very good, because--if it was--I would've heard it already. Music collectors are collecting. They're not really listening to music." Fair enough. But in the past [...]

I've been reading more and more recently about the Mezzanine Owls and how everybody loves them. It's all true. The Mezzanine Owls are an LA band that finished up recording their debut album Slingshot Echos which I think will be set for release later this year. You could call it shoegaze, some pop, but really just always worth listening. Reminds me a bit of another LA band, Silversun Pickups. and too many other things. I first heard of them via The TripWire who has some great words about the album and the band. [...]

Day 14 in an Austin Texas hotel room. We're all up late and wired, so I'm posting some tunes. I put an offer on a house today, I'm starting a new job, my wife is carrying our first child, and I've already fallen for this city. Life is good. Enjoy some new music. 01 - Fionn Regan - "Abacus" . I may as well lead off with this one as it's my favorite tune from this set. A recent signing by the increasingly impressive [...]
