What with all of the excitement of yesterdays BAMS post, I forgot I hadn't scheuled this post to go up. Better late than never eh?! This weeks chosen albums of the year come from Adam Stafford, A Band Called Quinn, St. Deluxe, Mondegreen, The Son(s), Bear Bones and Sparrow & The Workshop... Micachu & The Shapes - Chopped & Skrewed chosen by Adam Stafford Most of the albums that I've admired in 2011 have come [...]

by Stephanie Stevens-Wade Photos by Joshua Lawrence For a majority of music lovers the start of summer is the start of festival season: overpriced tickets, boxes of wine, headache-inducing lights shows and portaloos that burn your nostrils. Whilst you're packed like a sardine in the crowd dodging the flying cup of 'cider' spinning above, a day festival, set in a secret serene Kentish woodland sounds like heaven. Curated by The Laurel Collective , [...]

Each year in a unique forest location, somewhere in Kent, Laurel Collective curate a small festival, unlike any other- In the Woods . Curated, organised and built by the band with a small team of dedicated helpers, including celebrated event producer Lisa Farrell, the festival is fast becoming known as a benchmark show for breaking acts, having seen Anna Calvi , Micachu and The Shapes , Connan Mockasin and The Invisible all play storming sets on the cusp of career success. Indeed, Micachu returns this year to play a headline set, off the back of their project with [...]

Όταν ο Homme έδιωξε τον Oliveri από τους Queens of the Stone Age η έκπληξη ήταν μεγάλη αφού ο Josh ανεχόταν παιδιόθεν τον καραφλό και εκδηλωτικό μπασίστα με το μουσάκι. Άργοτερα έγινε γνωστό πως οι λόγοι είχαν να κάνουν με το γεγονός ότι ο Oliveri κακοποιούσε [...]

Micachu and the Shapes and the London Sinfonietta - "Everything" . Spending rapped knuckles like currency. Three punishments and you can buy a bowl of fruit. Makes you smug. Pear in your pocket, taunting teacher, asking for it. 3 o'clock; go home; dream of tearing the sidewalk with each rotation of a bicycle tire. Sometimes it gets so late that you can't remember if the minute-hand is long or short. It is so late and you don't know the time. Your mother and father don't care; they're snoring. You're on your own, eyeing dessert-knives in their drawer, imagining your heart [...]
tUnE-yArDs has been growing on me over the last few weeks. I think that I finally came to grips with Merrill Garbus's sound when I was able to define it. tUnE-yArDs is basically what happens when you mix The Dirty Projectors with Micachu and The Shapes and then run it all through a blender on the puree setting. Garbus stopped by Yours Truly to answer a few questions and play a live version of "You Yes You" which appears on the band's genre bending album w h o k i l l . If you [...]

When I first saw Micachu and the Shapes at CMJ in 2008, I was fairly underwhelmed. In hindsight I think it was probably the perfect storm that happens when too much hype (every review I read was all, "this chick plays a vacuum cleaner! OMGZ!") meets an awkwardly early set in the wrong venue. Of course, they'd also literally just signed to Accidental Records two months prior to that show. Not surprisingly, in the three years since then Mica Levi - the gender-bending Micachu herself - has [...]

In a time when genres become ever more blurred and, let's face it, utterly ridiculously named (Witch house? C'mon, WITCH HOUSE?!), artists who span, blur and eschew conventional musical boundaries aren't uncommon. Despite this, the classical world seems to have somehow remained quite resolutely separate from most (for want of a better all-encompassing term) popular modern music; an impenetrable fortress of stern appreciation, silent seated recitals and complicated sounds that even your noise cancelling Sennheisers can't do justice to. Separate, that is, apart from Mica Levi, better known as Micachu, who's long had one foot firmly in the classical camp. [...]
Not a standard second album, instead Chopped & Screwed is the result of a live collaboration between Mici Levi and her band and leading contemporary orchestra, the London Sinfonietta last year. It's Micachu , folks, but not as we know her. The process of chopping and screwing is a hip-hop technique whereby the tempo is halved, beats are skipped and the result is different from the original in almost every way. Think normal tunes but sloooooooooooooowed waaaaaaaay dooooooooown to the point where the hip, the hop and the hype are barely recognisable. The result is a [...]

With her near unpronounceable stage name and invented musical instruments Mica Levi is quite the alternative. And that's before you even take on board what her latest album 'Chopped and Screwed' is all about. The album was recorded live using a technique used in 902s hip-hop wherein songs are slowed down, speeded up and generally put through the cheese grater. While this appears about as appetizing as shower mold soup we have become quite taken with 'Everything'. Yes, the prevailing winds are unpredictable, yes Mica pulls shapes our ears are not accustomed to but the piece has an undeniable charm. [...]

scribed for This Is Fake DIY The eccentric talent of Mica Levi was refined and bred at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied composition. And this surprises a lot of people when you tell them, mainly because her debut album under the 'Shapes' moniker suggested very little restraint or any other common characteristic of your composer-by-numbers. Levi, you see, is anything but by-numbers. That debut, 'Jewellery', was one of 2009's finest records. Many saw its appeal solely through the fact that Levi and co. managed to construct [...]

Here's a list of the 7 artists I'm mostly looking forward to see at SXSW 2011. You definitely should have heard of these artists by now. If not, click around below and turn up your speakers! OWEN PALLETT: Formerly, the artist known as Final Fantasy is surnamed Pallett. Apparently #FF was taken. Shucks, so wow-much more nude name now. What do you get when you mix queer theory as applied in multi-layered solo performances w/ stringed instruments [...]
---Swear, there's an mp3 below. I've been neglecting this blog for over a day in order to start up a twitter (visible from our site now), and working on a new project which can't be unveiled to y'all yet. Before I consolidate the two worlds of music blogging and music tweeting, and come back here for good, I wanted to try an experiment. Instead of tweeting about this blog 200+ times in three days, I decided to blog a bit about an mp3 I posted on my twitter. The song is Micachu and the Shapes - [...]

This full-length mix is meant for those interested in who the premiere groups which SXSW is showcasing this upcoming weekend. I plan to be in attendance [about a 6-hour drive away]. Classical music collaborations are big this year. Only last week we reported Micachu and The Shapes work with The London Sinfonietta while last month Farris Badwan of The Horrors brought his Cat's Eyes project to The Vatican in Rome, you can see that performance here . Now premier dance-duo Basement Jaxx have collaborated with the Dutch Metropole Orkest for a one-off experimental gig. The performance took place in Holland's Muziekgebouw Eindhoven where London composer Jules Buckley conducted the orchestra and band. Felix Buxton composed [...]

When we first heard Micachu & The Shapes , we had a pretty good idea that there was something really unique going on here. Then we read up on the group, led by frontwoman Mica Levi, and were even more impressed. You see, the reason you hear so many unusual sounds on their 2009 album Jewellery (listen to Golden Phone right here ) is because Levi makes many of the instruments the group uses basically from scratch. And I'm not just talking about building instruments that already exist, I'm talking about creating instruments [...]
