Do you know about Gillian McKeith, the Awful Poo Lady? She pretends to be a doctor and goes round looking at people's excrement. Strange sort of hobby if you ask me. The thing is, she believes that by carefully examining the poo she can tell a lot about the person who made it. Things such as the fact that they're very bad at flushing the toilet after them, and that they sometimes forget to lock their front door. It's madeupology of the highest order. But what if it wasn't bonkers? And what [...]
Even Stevens , the first single from the new Bullion/Jesse Hackett project Blludd Relations , was a fun and colourful pop song. It sported a wry, playful smile on its face for the whole of the track’s 4 minutes and 47 seconds – I loved it for that. This Micachu reinterpretation, not so fun, but fuck me it great. It chugs along at a sloth’s pace, moans, shuffles and at times is frustrating as hell to listen to – but my god it’s engaging. It might only sound like the original track’s twice-removed cousin, but [...]

After hearing that James Blake's forthcoming overgrown album would sport features from Brian Eno and RZA, we couldn't help but imagine what other artists would have great chemistry with the UK singer and producer. With something to offer for just about every fan of music, James Blake's sound is rooted in everything from soul and R&B to dub-step and hip-hop. Which makes him such a stellar candidate for this installment of Armchair A&R . On the list you are going to see a number of notable names as well as rising stars, including everyone from Janet Jackson [...]

We were fascinated to see a new video from The Creators Project recently — it explores the work of South Korean artist Viktor Jan , and specifically a home-made Traktor controller he's made that starts or stops various loops as you put them in and take them out of a kitchen saucepan. The device blurs the line between art and utility, but it does call to mind all the weird and wonderful ways you can make music if you step outside the idea of using the same prefabricated instruments that everyone else does. Here are some other [...]
Skiffle gets laughed at. People seem to think that it's a joke musical form, that playing washboards and jugs and tea-chest bass is an indicator of novelty. It was actually an indicator of not having enough money to buy instruments but wanting to make music anyway. Punk didn't invent DIY, it just plugged it into an amplifier. I've got a lot of respect for the ethos of the music, if not the music itself. Now Micachu isn't actually skiffle, but she does make catchy music and abrasive noises with strange DIY instruments. I'm [...]

Fresh off a tour with Animal Collective and last Saturday’s canceled show at Williamsburg Park, Micachu and the Shapes (@m_a_t_h_e_s) headlined Le Poisson Rouge on Monday night. The first thing I noticed when the doors to the venue were opened was that the stage had transported itself to the middle of the floor and changed shape! Surrounded by spatterings of people, the now-circular stage held the night’s opener, Mykki Blanco . The tall, shirtless Blanco , sporting what looked to be shorts over plaid pajama pants (hey, it [...]

Father John Misty / photo by Dave Lichterman We can sum up the somewhat short list of shows this week as follows: all killer, no filler. Starting at the Showbox at the Market on Monday night with Iration & The Expendables and Cisco Adler . Tuesday, Animal Collective and Micachu & The Shapes are at Paramount Theatre, Bob Mould plays Copper Blue and Silver Age at Showbox at the Market , Sweden's Holograms are at Barboza with FF , and James McMurtry and The Gourds [...]

Milk, Brooklyn, 2012. We are now transmitting as well as getting sweaty in all of the wrong places in Brooklyn, or what I like to think of as the San Francisco of the east coast. It seems that the packaging and the story have all been repackaged nicely in terms of location and food. Here's the new of our old. Animal Collective - Applesauce - I found out that a bunch of these guys went to a high school near my high school [...]

Stacey Hatfield As performing names go, Daughter certainly exists pretty far on the "not very" end of the Google-ability scale, but they're worth the effort. Originally a pseudonym for London's Elena Tonra, its scope eventually expanded to include guitarist Igor Haefeli and now, with drummer Remi Aguilella in the fold, represents the trio and is a proper band - one whose dark, quietly dramatic, atmospheric folk turned out to be one of the highlights of this year's SXSW . Considering that hot on the heels of their festival appearances came the word that [...]

Frank Yang For a band for whom a large part of their appeal is being unknowable and otherworldly, there's been a high degree of predictability with Sigur Ros , at least when it comes to their Toronto shows. For over a decade, they've come through town in support of each record for an exquisite show at Massey Hall that would send 2700 or so of their fans dazed into the night. For the last time they set up anywhere besides the Grand Old Lady of Shuter Street, you'd have to go back to May 2001 [...]

Frank Yang The arc around The xx's 2009 debut xx was a narratively perfect one, rich with mystery, sex, and drama as the London trio vaulted from obscurity to Mercury and, most prestigiously, a place on my year-end list . And perhaps most crucially for a perfect story, they ended. Or at least went away for a while. Real life differs from stories, however, in that it generally doesn't let you just ride off into the sunset, and so after some deserved downtime [...]

Micachu & The Shapes - Never Rough Trades Records: 2012 Micachu and The Shapes waited for the perfect time to release their sophomore album Never , a follow-up to the to the over-the-pop, experimental album, Jewelry . It’s a time when things are getting weird. The entire First World is about to dine-and-ditch the economy. The weather, in all its rage, is actually an interesting topic of discussion. And, the state of American politics is like something out of the Twilight Zone , in which, [...]

Ryan McGinley Though Bat For Lashes were certainly due to release a new record this year - 20092s Two Suns feels like it came out forever ago - it was certainly a relief when Natasha Khan officially announced last month that her third album, entitled The Haunted Man , would indeed be coming out this Fall. But cognizant of the fact that simply knowing it exists will only keep fans happy for so long, some more specifics about the record have been released. [...]
Micachu & The Shapes have created a video for every song on their new record, Never , out now on Rough Trade Records . "Easy" "OK" "Low Dogg" Watch all the videos here .

It's Monday, which means it's time for another edition of our regular start-of-the-week stream-a-thon, wherein we scour the Internet for worthy and/or noteworthy albums that are streaming this week at absolutely no cost. It's a bit of an uninspiring haul this week, to be honest, but happily we've still managed to dredge up five records that are worth your time, led by the excellent new album from ever-fascinating UK producer Micachu and her band the Shapes. There's also fine indie pop from the antipodes courtesy of Lawrence Arabia, a killer new reggae compilation for the 50th anniversary of Jamaica's independence, [...]

Miss Management With her debut album Jewellery , Surrey's Mica Levi - professionally known as Micachu - was responsible for one of 20092s most unique albums - a clattering, noisy, collection of songs that sounded like they were created by a rummage shop collapsing on itself but was still unquestionably pop - albeit on the fringes - and compelling. Three years later, Levi has returned with a follow-up in Never , due July 24, and the whole thing is currently available to stream courtesy of [...]
The long awaited follow up to Jewellery is finally upon, thanks to the whimsical work of Micachu and the Shapes. Their latest effort is called Never , and it stands strong with lots of chaotic musical jabs, just as their 2009 debut did. Don't expect many soothing melodies here, as jagged instrumentation dominate here. With such short tracks, and harsh lyrical delivery, Never could be mistaken for a modern day punk album, with a touch of indie and grime. But the idea is not to hold Micachu to any genres, as you and [...]
