Back at the beginning of the year, Mice In Cars released two new songs packaged together as Good Men Are Monsters . Edgy and intense, both tracks are strong offerings from this outfit, each one building up into a triumphant climax. Recently, I expressed my preference for the more manic and aggressive Mice in Cars —the one with the slashing guitars and screamed vocals. But after watching this indieATL session, I have to admit that this more atmospheric version—the one with the textured grooves and melodic singing—isn't bad in a pinch. Taken from their 2009 EP, 53 Bicycles and a Dead Man , "All Birds Are Edible" finds the trio doing their best Hum impression with the echoing ambiance of the trio's more spacious musings paving the way for some seriously thunderous, alt-rock [...]

Dear Mice in Cars , This raw shit you're dropping on your new Good Men Are Monsters single is working for me. The first track was a little lackluster, but I'm feeling "Six Months on Mir." You say you recorded this in your rehearsal space at Thunderbox? Kudos gentlemen, this sounds NASTY. It's lo-fi, but still crisp and urgent. So you know what? I'm thinking ALL YOUR SONGS SHOULD SOUND LIKE THIS. No lie. Lose the clean vocals, keep the aggro screaming. And those rough-and-tumble guitars? Keep them too. Only go a little more scuzzy [...]

2011 was the year I dove headlong into local music. I listened to just about everything I could get a hold of, scouring through Facebook, Bandcamp and Soundcloud in my attempts to discover as many local artists and as much local music as I possibly could. But even now I feel as if there's so much out there that I'm missing out on. New bands and artists seem to to be sprouting up every day and the landscape of Atlanta music is constantly in flux, morphing and shifting into something unique and different. And so while the list [...]

So here it is: the last ATL Records to Listen For post of 2011. If you're putting together your year-end list of best local records or are just a fan making sure that you catch a taste of everything that's out there, here are your final entries. Although I can tell you for certain that there will be more records to surface in the coming weeks because, well, there's always more. I mean, just last month we had at least a half dozen releases suddenly drop into our radar with little or no warning. Some really excellent records, [...]

If you're getting just a little sick and tired of all the airy lo-fi garage pop rock psychedelicness streaming out of the Atlanta airwaves these days, and are yearning for something with more power and backbone, Mice in Cars might just be your ticket. Heavy on '90s era post-grunge guitars, the Atlanta trio craft surprisingly versatile alt-rock that swings effortlessly from bruising riffs to well-textured Hum -esque space rock. Their latest EP, and third studio cut overall, Burn the Reader , was recently released on the group's Bandcamp page where it can be downloaded [...]

As promised , February was an especially terrific month for local music with an array of solid releases from a diverse range of bands. The were some disappointing developments (where's the full HAWKS record dammit!), but there were also some unexpected and welcome surprises. In addition to the records highlighted in last month's post, we also got a double whammy from the Back Pockets in the form of, first, their three-song Bulla EP followed by the release of their sophomore full-length, Hello Dandelion . Indie rockers New Terminus got in [...]

It is a great day for checking out local music in Atlanta. Corndogorama closes out tonight with Dead Confederate and they just did a Laundro Matinee session that you can check out here . After that, there are two great options for the afterparty. Mice In Cars are playing The Earl right down the street. I've been listening to their newest album, 53 Bicycles and a Dead Man , and have been enjoying it more and more with each listen. It is very raw and the vocalist is definitely an acquired taste, but the [...]
