I used to loathe hippies. Not really for any particular reason; it was just part of the code lived by the young indie/punk rocker. No hippies. Sure, the reverence to shitty bands like Phish and the exaggerated use of patchouli always irked me, but god damn if those hippies weren't always smoking the best wacky tabacky. Now older, none the wiser, I realize that to slow the pace of the hectic world around you, one need only descend into a stone-cold, mellow groove. Yeah, you heard it. It's time to get your jam on. I'm not sure what [...]
When I notice Graboid posts back to back, it just makes me sad. The fact that I can't squeeze anything in between, just shows either how lazy or distracted i've become as of late. It's obvious that I need help with the blog, and i've extended an invitation for anyone to write ever since it started. I think a few emailed me but I don't know now because I deleted everything a couple of weeks ago. So if you were interested, email me again and we'll talk. Lots of great albums this week, with [...]

Pete Doherty on a different kind of high photo by Shaun Peter Curry We're getting about as tired as you are of hearing that Pete Doherty has been arrested , has landed back in rehab, so we thought we'd bring you some actual "news," and the focus today seems to be on musicians making changes, but first, it's Tuesday, and you know what that means... Tuesday's the day to dig deep into your pockets to pay for new [...]
Alex Kapranos and Erol Alkan spread New Order synth luster all over Franz Ferdinand's take on LCD's "All My Friends" -- so maybe we're just in that mode, but John Cale's version sounds like "Isolation" off of Joy Division's Closer , just with a James Murphy melody, right down to Cale's Curtis-sized delivery. For the trifecta, the "All My Friends" single also will have LCD covering Joy Division. There's a connection in there, somewhere. Hear Cale's cover at myspace.com/dfarecords .

I'm really liking the new Blonde Redhead album "23" which has a great consistent sound with their other stuff. They are actually playing tomorrow at the Glass House and I am guessing the tickets are long gone. They will also be performing at Coachella with a gazillion awesome bands! I will do a short Coachella entry next week for some of my favorite bands playing. Something totally strange: The hits on my site go up around 75-120 hits on average a day. Who the crap is looking [...]
While Mice Parade are great instrumentally, the main draw of the band (for me, at least) is the amazing drumming. So it came as no surprise to me that Mice Parade was originally the solo project of New York percussionist Adam Pierce. Because that is what's really at the core of Mice Parade: that driving, fantastic drumming. Aside from that, what can I say? It's instrumental, it's lush, it's atmospheric. It's cool. Mice Parade don't really have an official website, and they have no tour dates listed at their label's site, but these were [...]

What can I say about Adam Pierce that hasn't already been said? Actually, probably quite a bit. I don't think many people have officially heard of him, or his alter-ego otherwise known as Mice Parade. I was quite surprised to learn about Mice Parade a couple weeks back, and to find out Adam has been releasing albums under that moniker for almost 10 years, having released 6 albums. So now I feel bad for not having heard of him earlier, because if the upcoming self-titled album (his 7th) proves anything, it's that Mice Parade is worth listening to. Though I've [...]

Release Date: 05.08.07 Some albums are not meant to be cerebral or thought provoking. There is nothing wrong with some easy to digest pop, as that does often hit the spot. But then there are those times when the listener wants to be challenged. Sometimes we want to be taken on a journey, away from the monotony of daily life into a whole different realm. Mice Parade's self-titled album does just that, picking you up by the headphones and carrying you into a world of beautiful textures and interesting melodies. Mice [...]
Here's a handy roundup of clips from Thursday's Tribute To Bruce Springsteen (Featuring Bruce Springsteen) at Carnegie Hall. The vid quality is fair to shitty, but until a charitable bootlegger steps forth (please!), it's the best of what's around. (The...

Last Wednesday we saw singer/ songwriter Emi Meyer perform at the Montmarte Lounge in Hollywood. I have never been before and for a club it was huge with tons of swankin' expensive modern furniture, lighting and 3 bars! The show was a multiple act with art show, but I think the event didn't match the venue. Emi has a 4 song Ep trio style with drums, bass and a 'live at the Hotel Cafe' CD with 14 solo tracks. Emi recently won 1st place in the Seattle-Kobe Jazz [...]

Even with the rash of new albums being leaked via this old internet, I'm shocked no one is talking about the new Mice Parade release. I guess on one hand, it makes sense. How do you talk about an artist that doesn't really fit into any genre. The one I hear the most - jazz rock - is one I don't really thing exists, especially when you contrast the sounds of Mice Parade to that of Sea and Cake (whose new album we already gushed about). Rather than relying on floating, seamless, light [...]

I think I want to get back into taking pictures. My friend Tim just got a new digital slr for his wife. How rad. The trees below were taken just yesterday at a nameless park in Placentia , My home town 2.0 for the past couple years. I've always liked biking passed those trees. So there they are. Yesterday William and I scored big. There was this really nice guy selling a Greg Lemond Elite 10 speed roadbike for $30!!! WHAT?! He [...]
It's the peak of summer down here in Oz, so how about a short & sunny mixtape for everyone: Sound General's Warning: may contain traces of honey-coated, sugar-dipped acoustic ear candy IAN POOLEY - intro (this dude may be [...]

So! This was one of Mice Parade's earliest releases, the ones till this point being quite limited; this EP, My Funny Friend Scott , is the first listed in Fat Cat's Mice Parade section. This song, quite long by the artist's standards, is nonetheless a good introduction to the style of music Mice Parade represents. As I so often complain, it's difficult to describe, and I resent any categorization of something this diverse. I'd say it's sort of a groove-based instrumental organic electronica, but that's a mouthful in addition to being a completely [...]
Today is a mishmash. I've been working on a special project with the Bully of Culture himself, Chris , for a while now, and I just haven't had the time to dig for that next new artist. So I thought I'd resort to something more expected, I suppose. Today I'm serving up a mini-list, with a couple of mind blowing tracks. Downloads: Herbie Hancock - [...]

Another great weekend for live music in Dublin (as well as a unique one in terms of the first riots seen in Dublin for 25 years) , with the Wrong Music crew mashing it up in the Legal Eagle and Channel One's excellent free gig in the Music Centre launching their EP. So with all the great music I've been hearing I decided to post up some tracks I've been listening to a lot of lately. MP3s Channel One - 8 Divided by 13 Channel [...]
