Ideal for a lazy Sunday morning like this one: a delightful instrumental from Michael Chapman's '69 debut Rainmaker . Why this guy never really made the big leagues is beyond me. Michael Chapman - Sunday Morning
Say what you will about my musical knowledge (limited and hampered by a constant case of musical ADD) but I'm still on the discovery end of English folk rock. Oh sure, Light In The Attic's Michael Chapman releases are gangbusters, but that's where my toe dip ended ... until now. Drag City just put out [...]

Now that the Fall Fundraising Drive is over here at the station (thanks to everyone who donated), Rocktober marches on with another great week of shows ahead. On Tuesday, everyone's favorite Gossip plays at Showbox at the Market, and on Wednesday night Das Racist plays there too. Thursday night, Admiral Fallow is at Tractor Tavern. Friday is definitely the busiest night out with a ton of great choices, including the third annual Reykjavik Calling , a free show presented by KEXP with Icelandic artists Apparat Organ Quartet , Sudden Weather Change , [...]

In honor of Independence Day, KEXP is saluting some of our favorite indie record labels who's DIY-spirit helped revolutionize the music industry. As an independent radio station ourselves, KEXP is thrilled to give a 13-gun salute to these pioneers with a series of label spotlights through the Fourth of July. Despite getting his start working at major record labels, Josh Rosenthal has resolutely stuck to his own eclectic, and at times seemingly unmarketable interests, releasing fascinating compilations and re-issues through his label, Tompkins Square . He cites his work in [...]

The description for the recently released Michael Chapman tribute album, Oh Michael, Look What You’ve Done: Friends Play Michael Chapman , credits Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore with igniting American interest in the English folk veteran. In the same 2009 Fretboard Journal interview that brought said attention, Moore attributes Chapman with affecting his own improvisational sound. With all this reciprocal influencing, it follows that Moore would contribute to the aforementioned tribute record, and now we can hear what he delivered. While Chapman's 1969 original "It Didn't Work Out" is by no [...]

I have a nasty habit of getting stuck on a single song. Not sort of stuck, more like playing a song more times in a month than most folks listen to in a lifetime. My most listened to song of 2012 which I got on New Years Day has been played more than 90 times. [...]
Well, it's been one of those years. For one reason or another, my record searching out ability, and time or inclination to sit down and write something about records, has been seriously curtailed this year. And so it seems appropriate that the first two records in my list weren't even released this year. So it goes. The Obligatory Album From Last Year That I Only Heard This Year Cotton Jones - Tall Hours In The Glowstream Tipped off by the marvellous Song, [...]

Until about a fortnight ago I'd never heard of Michael Chapman . Browsing a review of Glenn Jones's The Wanting , and searching for the CD on Amazon, the recommendation engine did it's usual "People who browsed for this also shopped for" and Michael Chapman's "Trainsong" caught my eye. Don't know about you, but I usually ignore this, but for once I thought I'd give it a try. How glad am I. For this record is a work of huge beauty. Chapman, now 70, has re-recorded 26 of his songs from his [...]
