An unexpected, yet very welcome, side effect of the latest Ghost Capital mix has been an (of this writing) unyielding Michael Hurley bender. I want to highlight "I Paint A Design," culled from Hurley's 1994 album, Wolfways and featured in Ray McKinnon's poignant southern gothic short-film The Accountant MP3: Michael Hurley :: I Paint A [...]

A singer/songwriter in the subversive Greenwich Village folk scene of the late '60s and '70s, with several songs lent to the Holy Modal Rounders, Michael Hurley maintained an infrequent solo career into the '90s but was more famed for his writing credits. Born on December 20, 1941 in Pennsylvania, he migrated to Greenwich Village by the early '60s and was ready to sign a major record deal when he contracted mononucleosis; after spending several years in the hospital, Hurley returned to music and released a Folkways album in 1964 titled First Songs. Though he was inactive through the [...]

Lately I've been spending a lot of time listening to Strand of Oaks' brilliant second LP, Pope Killdragon , so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Timothy Showalter recorded a few covers for Aquariam Drunkard recently. And while you're at it, do yourself a favor and check out Pope Killdragon . It was one of the best records of 2010, and you can preview the entire thing at bandcamp.com . But to get you started, here's Showalter performing one of the album's highlights, "Sterling," at the edge of a pier: [...]

Like I said in my last post, I'm really looking forward to this upcoming weekend in Portland, OR. Indie Shuffle will be attending this year's Pickathon Indie Roots Music Festival from August 5-7. We already went over our top 10 favorite bands playing at this year's folk soiree; today's playlist features five lesser known bands that we're really excited to see. From Latin roots to 1960s folk, the artists featured here may have been lurking in the shadows for a while - we're happy that they'll have a chance to shine at Pickathon this year. [...]

(Day 2 photos coming soon, courtesy Cary Whitt.) Mud & Music, that was Day 3 of Nelsonville. Lots of both. Mud isn't quite as interesting to photograph, though, so here's some bands. Over the Rhine Wanda Jackson I was a little worried when I saw [...]

photos by Chris La Putt Michael Hurley @ Brooklyn Bowl Jonny Corndawg @ Brooklyn Bowl Jonny Corndawg completed his April residency at Brooklyn Bowl last night (4/25) with an impressive lineup of openers that included Jason Isbell ( who played Bowery Ballroom a few days earlier ) and folk legend Michael Hurley who Jonny is [...]
With an unmatched focus on environmental sustainability, Pickathon Music Festival 's only vice is some wonderful noise-pollution for neighboring Portland, Oregon. Taking place in Happy Valley, OR between August 5th and 7th, the indie-roots festival bypasses the normal list of festival regulars , to establish an eclectic family-friendly bill of banjo pickers, acoustic outfits, soul legends, and other bluegrass greats. For its 13th installment , Pickathon already tapped Mavis Staples, Bill Callahan, Lee Fields & The Expressions, plus the Fruit Bats and others, and are now completing the lineup with 11 new acts - pushing the [...]
Local DIY radio station Hollow Earth Radio is getting ready for its fourth annual Magma Festival this March and while the video announcing the line-up might give you nightmares, the bevy of great local and national acts that are playing won't. A $60 donation to Hollow Earth, will not only help the volunteer run, non-profit [...]
My friend Jeremy lives in Harlem; I live 3,000 miles away. As such we do not see one another all that often; and when we do it's mostly centered around when his band, Roadside Graves, is out West touring or I'm in New York City. But somehow, when we do get together, the conversation, after [...]
All month long, all San Francisco/Bay Area bands. That's the rub. Get with it. - When I decided to write a label showcase for San Francisco's up-and-comer Secret Seven I dipped back in to The Daily Choice archives to see if by chance, I'd focused on this label's output in the past. And sure enough, I have, [...]
Barbara Manning has kept a low profile over the past few years-playing shows mostly in her home base of Chico, California-but those who are in the know, know (and all very beautiful, intelligent people). With no new records to speak of you might think she'd called it a day. Impossible-I've seen her notebooks and tapes filled with pure pop gold. Manning has recorded and performed songs with new bands like The Sleaze Tax and Champion, and more recently a short-lived power pop band called Rocket 69 that performed with her heroes The Clean in San [...]

"Why should anything be hidden? p Is it not a mere trick? p Why much in little? Why not much in much? p Is not understatement a kind of cowardice, or at best miserliness? p It is no use talking about suggestiveness or imagination, for this begs the question, which is, why should we (be forced to) imagine what might just as well be displayed in full? p When we eat Christmas pudding we are not asked to imagine the raisins – R.H. Some Japanese wiseguy named Hokekyo Sho once proclaimed that ´at the third cup, wine drinks the man´. He got pretty famous with that one, and he just may have been right, too. Which hardly ever stops me from pouring said cup, but that´s another story... Here´s a grand cru , slightly country-flavoured tenpack with a velvety aftertaste about a mighty fine drink. "Strawberries, cherries and an angel´s kiss in spring, my summer wine is really made from all these things..." Salud ! Charlie Walker - Who Will Buy The Wine MP3 [...]

Allwood Sisters, Porch Stage I just want to sing the praises of the Nelsonville Music Festival for a minute, because not only did they provide me with a pretty killer weekend, I think they deserve some props for putting together one of those things that makes you feel psyched to be in Ohio, and that you're kinda glad not everyone knows how good we've got it. I'll preface this with a story that describes the tone of this festival and the people who are involved: I called down to Stuart's Opera House [...]
