Cover Art by grafista I hope you enjoyed our little duets one year anniversary mixtape as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you... but now it's time to get back to the business of our presentation of the Essentials mixtapes entered into our Society contest , to keep the new year going, proper. Next up, in no particular order, is grafista and his wonderful entry Don't Fear The Music . After listening a shit load of times, stuck on mad repeat, I [...]

From here : Blue Buttons are not true jellyfish, but are Chondrophores. These are actually colonies of polyps. In other words, they are like a tiny colony of animals. Each animal contributes something different to the colony. Some form the central disk, while others form the tentacles. Blue buttons exist in colonies, and mass beachings frequently occur since they are at the mercy of the [...]
As I mentioned in August, Vetiver's 2008 all-covers album, Thing of The Past, has been a favorite around here over the past few months. Today, we're taking that interest a little further. If you're curious in the artists behind the scenes, below are the twelve original versions beginning with Elyse Weinberg and ending with Louisiana's [...]

This comparison has been rattling around in my head (and in my headphones) for a while now. These two are artists, separated by 44 years and many many miles, but they share a very similar vocal style. You've probably never heard of either one of these guys, one a Columbus performer I first heard just a few months ago, and the other I just became aware of a few weeks ago when the disc from Smithsonian Folkways arrived at my doorstop. According to the myth as told by Wikipedia, Hurley was "discovered" in 1964 and this disc, [...]

Michael Hurley - "Light Green Fellow" (Gnomonsong 2007) Michael Hurley – Ancestral Swamp / Gnomonsong I've been searching for just the right way to place the minimal folk of traveled songwriter Michael Hurley in context with contemporary music for a good hour now. I don't think it can be done, at least not snugly. Ancestral Swamp , the folk veteran's twentieth LP and first for the Devendra Banhart-helmed Gnomonsong imprint, acts as a sort of wormhole in music. Though his voice reflects his mid-60s [...]

Ik reed er pas nog langs: het meertje waaraan een camping gevestigd is. Achter het meer loopt een spoorbaan en hierachter ligt een klein stuk bos. In dit bos had ik ooit mijn spannendste verjaardag van een vriendje ooit. Wij,...

The Cat's Just Fine He Never Left by Will Hubbard It is true, as Charles Simic says at the beginning of his recent review of The Collected Poems of Robert Creeley , that publishers' recent affinity for printing elegantly bound, thousand-pages editions of a single 20th century poet could make for some tedious reads. Perhaps it all began with Donald Allen 's brilliantly edited Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara , which at 560 pages still managed to garner the [...]

I don't have all the answers about Michael Hurley and how his "outsider folk" and rambling ways somehow managed to connect with some of our generations great independent artists (Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, and Devendra Bernhardt all claim him as an important influence). This is his 20th record and I suspect it's the first I've heard by him. His first record came out in 1965 and the story goes that it was recorded with the same reel to reel machine as Leadbelly's Last Sessions . On Ancestral Swamp , just out on Bernhardt's own label - [...]
Michael Hurley - "Be Kind to Me" A sloppy, lumbering country boogie, "Be Kind to Me" is a humble, but ultimately unreasonable plea for kindness. The specific form of kindness that Mr. Hurley is after is the reciprocation of his love for a particular woman - "the best ol' girl you've ever seen" - who for years has rebuffed him at every turn. "I hardly feel like a mustard seed," Hurley whines, "because your love is all I need." What kind of pain must this man be in to describe his status as sub-mustard seed? Unfortch for The Hurler, he [...]

Image: Global Graphica Werewolves In The City - Viking Moses It would be easy to dismiss "Werewolves" as the paranoid rantings of another acid-scarred beardo with a psychedelic dream and a beat machine set on "stun." Viking Moses, aka Brendon Massei, doesn't do much to discourage this notion. His official bio claims "many balls-to-the-wall musicians adopt a bohemian persona to fit their music, but Viking Moses is the real deal," adding [...]

Play it: Deadwood Season 1 Tonight marks the third season of the David Filch created HBO drama Deadwood . But instead of buzz about the new season, talk has centered around how a critically acclaimed series like this got dropped for it's 4th season. This won't be the end of Deadwood , as there is in the works plans for two 2-hour movies next year to wrap [...]
