R.E.M.'s major label debut, Green , was released on Election Day in 1988. It was a canny move from a political band, making their mark on the public consciousness on the very day the Reagan administration turned into the first Bush administration. The record also happened to be the band's entry into the big leagues, going from a small-town Southern band with a knack for jangle guitar and art-punk posturing into a world conquering behemoth that would become one of the most popular bands of the 902s. While the album itself is [...]

"There's a sucker born every minute" -- David Hannum Yawn...the last few releases in R.E.M.'s 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition series have been extremely lackluster and the band's new EP, "Live in Greensboro", which is a companion piece to the forthcoming Green reissue (out May 14th), doesn't fail to disappoint. "Live in Greensboro" is being marketed as "featur[ing] a handful of performances from the Greensboro show that, due to space constraints, are not found on the [ Green ] Deluxe Edition". While the implication is that this EP [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Music Appreciation Sandra-Lee Phipps, REM HQ It was this week some 30 years ago that Athens, GA band R.E.M. released their first proper studio album Murmurs , kickstarting a career that would yield dozens of worldwide hits, 15 studio albums and James Mercer 's eternal ire because he knows The Shins will never be as good as them. Murmurs is [...]

If you can legitimately love, love , an album, then I most certainly love R.E.M.’s Murmur . I’ve traveled everywhere with it, and have listened to the band’s debut hundreds of times over the years. It props me up when I’m down and keeps me level when I’m up. I know every Bill Berry drum fill, every guitar sound emitting from Peter Buck’s Rickenbacker, and every intricate bass line and harmony courtesy of Mike Mills. As for R.E.M.’s front man, Michael Stipe, his lyrics on this and other early R.E.M. albums remind me of extended family members. I [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List Michael Stipe Successful touring musicians often live fishbowl lives -- the center of attention, gawked at, photographed. Now more than ever in this age of camera phones and instant uploads they rarely escape the public's gaze. Some of them turn the tables, picking up their own cameras and looking back-at their audiences, [...]
Those familiar with the first Rogue’s Gallery issued back in 2006 might approach news of a follow-up collection, Son of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys , with a mixture of delight and apprehension. This curious enterprise, the brainchild of Pirates of the Caribbean team - specifically, Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Hal Willner - brings the light of day to largely traditional songs of the sea that otherwise might have remained in Davy Jones’ locker. The performers lend a whole new meaning to that familiar title, Various Artists, as the [...]

Here's a question for your next late-night game of Trivia Pursuit: What was Michael Stipe' s first recording following the demise of R.E.M.? The answer is a pirate shanty - yes , pirate shanty - with Courtney Love (!) titled, "Rio Grande". Welcome to the end of 2012. And possibly the world as a whole if you're so inclined to believe. Once again, we've taken the stray thoughts that fell through the cracks in our Annual Report and compiled them into one (hopefully) comedic list. As my esteemed colleague Jeremy Larson wrote last year , "Year-end summaries, lists, recaps, and reports are just study guides for an exam that’s never happening, you guys ." True, but by listing things and poking a little fun, we're doing our part to remind you that the music industry can be [...]

When it comes to putting on a benefit concert, you'll have to pull out some heavy artillery. The 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief did just that, with some unforgettable moments. Sure, at times it felt overstuffed, which is pretty unavoidable for five and a half hours. Paul McCartney [...]
