Thanks to Nick Cave's old buddy Mick Harvey (formerly of the Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party), we now have confirmation about PJ Harvey 's (no relation) autoharp-laden new album (via TwentyFourBit ). Said Mick on his MySpace page at the end of August: "There will be extensive touring commitments with my dear friend Polly (PJ) after the release of her new album in February 2011." He continued, "We recorded her album back in May in Dorset and it's a remarkable piece of work - quite unlike anything else out there. Would [...]
![Nick Cave - Henry's Dream [Remastered] CD Review (Mute)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2551294_lg.jpg)
Nick Cave's seventh studio album, Henry's Dream (1992), is the last of the current set of reissues. This sound of this album heads back toward the dark intensity of Tender Prey without giving up the acoustic sounds of The Good Son . "Henry's Dream," explains Nick Cave, "was one of the first records that I came to with an absolute sound in my head as to how this record should be. What I wanted to make with Henry's Dream was a very violent acoustic record, basically using storytelling and [...]

Mick Harvey : Mother of Earth [ purchase ] There's a story that Billy Idol heard the Gun Club playing Mother of Earth, tried to copy it and came up with White Wedding. Former Bad Seed Mick Harvey simply decided to cover the song. Think of this as a prayer by a man who has used up all his chances. Think of Edward Weston's photograph of a dead drifter he stumbled on in the desert. Think of John Fante's "Ask the Dust" if you want but try not to think of [...]

Jeffrey Lee Piercen (1958-1996) muistoa kunnioittava We Are Only Riders ei ole perinteinen tribuuttilevy. Tunnetuimpien kappaleiden sijaan mukana olevat sangen nimekkäät artistit ovat lähteneet tulkitsemaan yhdessä erinäisiltä kaseteilta ja nauhoilta löytyneitä viimeistelemättömiä Piercen kappaleaihioita. Osa biiseistä perustuu karkeisiin demoversioihin (mm. Ramblin' Mind, Constant Waiting ja Free To Walk), kun taas toisten pohjana on ainoastaan instrumentaaliraidat ilman sanoituksia (The Snow Country). Ainoastaan Lucky Jim on aikaisemmin julkaistu, mutta sekin rakennettiin tätä albumia varten erilaista demoversiota hyödyntäen. Mielenkiintoista on huomata, miten artistit ovat päätyneet hyvinkin erilaisiin lopputuloksiin, vaikka rakennusaineet ovat olleet samat. Kappaleet ovat myös [...]

The first time I saw Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire was a life-changing moment for me. The films beauty, music and message overwhelmed me and literally changed my perspective on life. One of the many messages of the film was it's ode to appreciating the smallest things in life; the color of a flower, the smell of food and the sensation of touching a womans' skin. Within the film, there are performances by two bands whom I was only vaguely familiar with previously. Nick Cave and the Bad Seed and Crime and the City Solution provided [...]

In homage to Brigitte Bardot who celebrated her 75th birthday last Monday, we bring you l'histoire de BONNIE AND CLYDE . The year was 1967, Serge Gainsbourg had landed the job of writing and directing a few musical numbers for Le Bardot Show . A working relationship very quickly developed into a series of steamy romantic liaisons, much to the chagrin of every other Frenchman opening his copy of France Soir to see paprazzi snaps of their divine B.B. arm-in-arm with her frog prince, whom [...]

Anna Maria, regular guestposter from Sweden, wins a copy of Gainsnord with her entry on her fave Serge song: Anita Lane, Nick Cave's old flame sang a lovely version of Overseas telegram on chief Bad Seed Mick Harvey's Serge tribute Intoxicated Man. It's in English but Lane's vocals are very suited to Gainsbourg's material. She's got that breathy close-mike Jane Birkin approach that works so well and makes this one of my favourite Gainsbourg covers. The strings are bursting with yearning as are the vocals on this version. You can really believe she misses her man. Lane's take on [...]

The Stooges are one of those bands I like but not enough to do much about (I own one album), but when I heard Kim Salmon was playing with Mick Harvey at this belated tribute to the late Ron Asheton I thought I'd better go and see that. I never saw Bored! during the early 90s - the whole "Geelong scene" left me pretty cold, me not being interested in scenesters - so I had the always interesting
Mick Harvey has finally fled the pod, as he leaves the Bad Seeds after quarter of a century : "For a variety of personal and professional reasons I have chosen to discontinue my ongoing involvement with Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. "After 25 years I feel I am leaving the band as it experiences one of its many peaks; in very healthy condition, and with fantastic prospects for the future. "I'm confident Nick will continue to be a creative force and that this is the right time to pass on my artistic [...]
![Mick Harvey Quits The Bad Seeds [Bad News]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1476128_lg.jpg)
Just wanted to chime in with my disappointment at the news of the departure of Mick Harvey from Nick Cave's ace backing band, The Bad Seeds. It stung when Blixa Bargeld left in 2003, but this one really hurts. Harvey's been involved since the beginning, and he's always been a stolid live presence in what (to my mind) is the greatest, most tasteful backing band around. Plus, Warren Ellis has been nothing but a glory hog (and an oft out-of-tune one at that) since his admittance to the band, [...]
Compare and contrast: First Choice Holidays advert (currently showing on UK television) Serge Gainsbourg et Charlotte Gainsbourg – Lemon Incest You can imagine the F*rst Ch**c* project brief was to come up with a poignant, yet heart-warming image of family holidays (with none of the usual trappings: arguments, tantrums, sunburn, fry-ups, etc). And the music? A stark and lilting piano version of Serge Gainsbourg's 'Lemon Incest'. Look! There he is cavorting on black satin sheets with his [...]
Poor Sheffield United. I can't say I'm one of Neil Warnock's biggest fans, but he does give good soundbites, making a comedic alternative to most of the cliche-laden managers in the Premiership (apart from the 'special one' - everything that comes from his mouth is a joke, especially his post Champions League semi-final comments). Who would have thought a decade ago that relegation from the

Black Ghosts "Any Way you choose to give it" (Playgroup remix) Entendu dans une soirée hier, [...]

Dear friends, I wish I could hang up a "Gone Fishing" sign 'cause in a sense, that's what I'm doing right now. Please bear with me and enjoy these covers. 1. The elegant Captain commands from the dunes. Mojo magazine decided to get a bunch of bands to cover Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in its entirety and Captain had the nerve to do A Day in the Life . We [...]

Are there songs by Serge that can't be sung by a girl? Requiem pour un con springs to mind, but there are at least two female versions of this bitter, angry revenge-song Serge wrote for (and sang in) the 1968-movie Pacha , with Jean Gabin. See that great scene here . To me, the song is a speech on a funeral of a major asshole, read by someone who finally sees his chance to get even. Ofcourse, girls can feel that emotion just as well, both Zazie and Vanessa Paradis did credible [...]

It was 1967, and the Summer of Love had had immense consequences. Take the young, gorgeous French filmstar and the ugly, talented French songwriter. Her marraige was afloat, he fell for her mightily. Those two were Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg, whose working relationship developed into a love affair. Bardot was starring on tv in the Bardot-show , a kind of MTV clipshow avant la lettre. Serge wrote some of his best tunes for her, which were performed with lots of costume changes and outlandish backdrops. One of the songs Serge wrote for BB was Bonnie & Clyde [...]
