Supergroup my ass. That term generally signifies bland half-baked jams (Superheavy, Them Crooked Vultures), main group throwaways (Golden Smog, Monsters of Folk), intriguing novelty (The Baseball Project, Tinted Windows) or sheer wretchedness (Chickenfoot). Middle Brother brings their A game and top flight songs. Middle Brother brings together three songwriters (Deer Tick's John McCauley, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith and Delta Spirit's Matthew Vasquez) whose main bands have yet to rise above club status. They cherry pick the best attributes from each band and reign in their excesses. While Vasquez (the Crazy Horse inspired "Blue Eyes", the irresistible 50's [...]

Sorry about the long delay (went on vacation, got distracted, etc.). I have a good feeling that this one is going to show up close to the top of my partner's list, so I won't steal his thunder. Enjoy.

I first saw this card and started thinking of all the other lyrics that would be appropriate for cards for the indie music lover in your life. Of course there are an infinite number of options and these were what came first. I hit a wall while browsing the more extensive discographies of bands like Wilco, Elliot Smith, and Ryan Adams. In some cases the lyrics are grossly out of context and may be found in a heartbreak kind of song. Sometimes that one sweet line has a way of standing out above the real meaning of the song. This [...]
I know I am a little late on this, but here are the albums that I am looking forward to hearing the most. Please understand this is not my guess at what will be the best albums of 2012, or my attempt at finding the pulse of what the general public is most excited about. These the 12 albums that I am personally the most excited about. Also know that I have excluded several albums that have already been released that surely would have made this list, had I done a month ago, including the new ones by [...]

{Hey fuckers! FYI: Fuckers is a term of endearment. Another FYI for you: I forgot I had a blog. But the accidental blogging interim did provide me with much time to not sit on the internet all day. It gave me time to process a break up. I mean, I think it was a break up. I officially gave up on getting married (I NEED SOME CATS!) and living on a farm. That was tough on my brain. But I'm fine now, all. Music is again my boyfriend. The break also gave me time to hang with my child, buy [...]

5. The Barr Brothers – The Barr Brothers The Barr Brothers' debut didn't exactly come out of nowhere, b ut it certainly exceeded my high expectations. Seamless shifts from hushed vocals and plucked harp to ragged bluesy bluster, with gorgeous sweeping melodies throughout. [...]

And so here we have our top ten albums of the year. To be honest the order is fairly arbitrary - on another day it could be a completely different as really these ten records have so little between them in turns of the pleasure and enjoyment they gave us. If you've not acquainted yourselves with any of these then we're pretty sure you won't be disappointed. 2011 - what a fine year for music. 10 Twilight Hotel - When The Wolves Go Blind Download Twilight [...]

Well, you have seen my top 60 songs of 2011 posted on here over the past couple of weeks. There were a few that I reluctantly left off the list but still think they deserved some credit. Here are some of the stragglers that just missed out. Enjoy. Free mp3: The Black Keys - Sister Free mp3: Gardens & Villa - Black Hills Free mp3: Middle [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. Welcome to the top 10, albums that to be quite honest, could all be number ones, but hey it wouldn't be a list without some order. These are the thoroughbreds. I'm sure [...]

2011 was another year of musical discovery for me. Clocking in highest on the discovery meter were San Francisco's Girls ; but right up there with Girls were two bands that can't technically qualify for my best of 2011 album list: Delta Spirit and Titus Andronicus . Their latest albums - History from Below and The Monitor (respectively) - were both released in 2010, but I didn't hear them until this year. Overall, when I think of 2011, these three [...]
Here at Hidden Track, compiling our end of the year list of the 25 best albums has been eerily similar to the process of devising another top 25 list - the college football top 25. When we started four years ago, we attempted to devise a quantitative methodology that systematized the rankings and took the individual biases out of the equation, while still incorporating the collective views of everyone involved at HT. Well, that was sort of our BCS. This year we're going back to the old school and running it AP Top 25 style. In other words, every writer [...]

John McCauley has already had quite the busy 2011, having toured and released albums with both the indie-roots super-group Middle Brother and with his longtime band Deer Tick. The singer-songwriter's latest project sees him teaming up for with Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Ian Saint Pé (The Black Lips), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate) and Bryan Dufresne (Six Finger Satellite) for another unique "super group" they've dubbed Diamond Rugs . The band will release their debut album next Spring via Partisan Records, and this past week gave a sneak preview of what's to come by [...]

Our final Top Ten selection comes courtesy of the lovely, and ever radiant, Mrs Mackerel. Over to you girl! It's been a great musical year. But such a plethora of riches always presents a problem – what's a girl to choose? Fortunately some fine contributions in the preceding week means most bases are covered. Live gigs, although few and far between this year, have been rich in quality, and particularly finger-picking good on the guitar front. A fine ensemble of gig friends too, thank you. Without further ado, here's my humble opinion. And remember [...]
Heycoolkid!'s 100 Best Songs Of 2011 (41-55) . . 55. Middle Brother - "Me, Me, Me" What is there not to love when combining key elements of Delta Spirits, Deer Tick, and Dawes? "Me, Me, Me" is an indie honky-tonk set on fire. Every element from the Jerry Lee Lewis style piano to the Lynard [...]

So, the penultimate entry before Mrs Mackerel finishes off this year's set of Top Ten postings tomorrow is my very own. Without further ado... 10. Milk Music - Beyond Living Although it was released early in the year, I only discovered it recently. A full on, no holds barred, nihilistic 70s punk attitude and the very best of the heavyweight riffs of the grunge era is a mighty powerful combination. One that makes me wish my car stereo went all the way up to eleven. Download Milk Music - Beyond [...]
