You may want to start at the beginning, to have this make any sort of sense. “Hey, Steve,†you say. “Hey, brah,†Stephen says, contemplatively. “I’m the singer of Middle Distance Runner. I like lyrics and acoustic guitars, ‘cause I’m [...]

Editor's Note: This was written by Ian Glinka from DC's Middle Distance Runner . This is part of a series of posts that they are writing today. Continue to the bottom, to link to the rest. I'm Ian -- bass player for Middle Distance Runner. Like most people, I hate things and I love things. Because this is a music blog, I was forced to can my original idea of just talking about how much the original Maniac Mansion [...]
Yeah, the rumors are true. Today is my birthday. Thanks to everyone that has wished me well. I was trying to figure out what the hell I wanted to do for my birthday post, then it kind of hit me. I wanted to do a mix of some type. I also have been wanting to do a mix of some of the best local music, so it seemed like a good fit. This mix includes bands from the Baltimore, Washington, and the southcentral Pennsylvania region. This is the whole region that I cover. [...]

These guys are their own hosts. Great guests. Means they get bumped up in the queue, too, by default ('cause I'm still trying to wade through the ez archive mess. "EZ"??? What a fucking misnomer that is!) Not that these guys don't deserve a post . . . They do. They've released one of my favorite discs of the year . Middle Distance Runner has released what may be my favorite indie unknown record from the second half of [...]

I like the do-it-yourselfers, the go-getters and the humorous. Middle Distance Runner fulfills all three. Their self-promotion of their new album Planes In Flames came with a $1 Virginia scratch-off lottery ticket. MJ and I don't play the lottery, but we do play the "What if we won the lottery?" game. Of course, as the swindlers say, "You gotta play to win", but you never win. Anyway, this was fun because MJ finally got to play, and for free! Of course we [...]

For every great band name there are about a hundred that I think are absolutely awful. While I won't go as far as to say their name is awful (sorry), I do think the music that Middle Distance Runner is putting out is definitely worth you taking the time to listen to. Hailing from Washington, DC, Middle Distance Runner is quickly amassing a following and garnering some great interest with the release of their record Planes In Flames . Making a name for themselves by playing shows and leaving free CD's around the city, [...]
I feel as though I've just been a party to payola. Not because Middle Distance Runner included a (losing) lottery ticket in their package, but something far worse. You see, in exchange for writing about them...I received a CD with some wonderful pop tunes (Sorry. We studied ethics in Journalism ...
Despite the cover image of a paper airplane crashing into a bleak and barren grassy field, D.C.'s Middle Distance Runner should be sailing high on the love being lavished on their self-released debut, Plane In Flames . MDR are on a classic rock-pop trajectory; they've stopped along the way to pick up influences from Bends -era Radiohead and The Strokes; with a lay-over in some funky towns, adding a dance floor sensibility to the proceedings. Each cut exudes confidence, showmanship and a clear sense that these boys are having fun while rocking out. [...]
So I was all set to do a big-ass post yesterday, but then Shanna Moakler bitch-slapped Paris Hilton and I had to work late (yes, I am officially writing for three people now); hence random crap today. But it's good random crap. The musical equivalent of pooping a bouquet of daisies, even. Datarock, "Fa-fa-fa" - By now, of course, the cat's pretty much out of the bag on "Fa-fa-fa"; I'd really been hoping that I'd be the one to brighten the blogosphere with its introduction, but then again I never really [...]

Who else cannot believe that it is freaking October already? While it may suck that we will be freezing our asses off in a few weeks, not all of the news is bad. The Baltimore region's fall concert influx is in full swing and continues this week. The Hold Steady The week begins with a solid Monday. Elf Power and Water School bring the indie rock to The Talking Head . The Hold Steady and [...]

Yesterday, I got an awesome pacakge from up-and-coming band D.C. band Middle Distance Runner . Not only did they send me their CD, and a hilarious personalized note, but also a slightly used pack of Dentyne Ice Arctic Chill (because in their words, "Apparantly nothing is colder then ice, dentyne ice"). As it turns out, I found both the gum and the album to be extrememly fresh and satisfying. The album starts off with the wonderfully catchy "Naturally", and the handclaps draw you right into the album. Garage-rock "Man of the People" is the [...]

This should have my inbox cleared out of what was there up to a week ago. This is it for now, but you will see more of these in the near future... If you go on their pure volume site, this is what you wil get: " GCM are a three-piece band from Edinburgh, Scotland. Listen to the songs." If you go on their myspace site, you don't get much more. I don't have a picture of them posted, because they don't have one available. If you ask for [...]
