The Appleseed Cast's purchase is as strong as ever with new EP. This stalwart Lawrence, Kansas band returns with 28 minutes of what it does best, namely swath the listener in a dreamlike haze. Fifteen years into its career, the Cast delivers one of its most vital tracks to date with "Middle States", which highlights the chiming guitars of Chris Crisci and Aaron Pillar plus the acumen of the Nate Whitman (bass)/John Momberg (drums) rhythm section. The 14-minute closer "Three Rivers" is a long and winding piece...
The Appleseed Cast is not a band even dedicated indie music aficionados seem to think about frequently. The band so readily slips between the cracks of emo, indie and vocal post-rock, it's almost tempting to label it shoegaze. It's certainly not emo anymore, not even second-wave. And the quiet niche that is post-rock nerds don't hype the band with unceasing praise that Unwed Sailor or Godspeed You! Black Emperor receive. That's not to say the Lawrence, Kansas quartet isn't worthy of acclaim. Its most recent EP, Middle States , is a rare, skilled demonstration of what [...]
Duluth natives Low love Democrats as much as you do. They'll be showing just how much tomorrow at Painter Park, where the DFL is hosting a Blue BBQ to celebrate progress (and summer, obviously)

The Lawrence, Kansas emo veterans persevere with another mediocre EP. The Appleseed Cast pride themselves on evolving with the times. Their gentle, often fluid indie rock sound has morphed slowly since the band's inception in 1998, from the emo of their late '90s albums to the post-rock of their early aughts experiments. The group has remained something of a character actor in alternative music, however, partly because of their isolated Midwestern origins and partly because of an innately lackluster originality. With the Middle States EP,...

It quite apparent that I love the Appleseed Cast , duh. I remember watching their set at Fun Fest this past year and wondering why more people weren't screaming "THE CAST!" like I was. Sure, the newer stuff isn't quite as enjoyable as the old favorites, but it's still solid. So today I'm pumped to hear about a new EP from the band entitled Middle States coming our way June 7th on Graveface Records . Also with this news comes the first taste of the EP in the form of new song "Middle States". It really reminds [...]

Coming from the middle of nowhere isn't always the greatest way to grow up. Sure, life in the big city can be hard, but at least there's amazing culture, wonderful food, and other people to share in the joy and misery with. But if there's one group that makes that place sound oh so wonderful, it's the The Appleseed Cast . Formed in 1997 in Lawrence, KS, the post-rock group has made a career taking that small town energy and hunger for something more and making intense and powerful music. So, with the upcoming release of Middle States [...]
A little bird just tweeted in our ear news of a hot benefit show going down at Lee's Liquor Lounge this Saturday night. Wind Cries Mary is being held in honor of Mary Michaels, a local punk and art scene mainstay whose battle with breast cancer came to an end only one year ago. Mary [...]
Head on down to the Lowry Theater this Saturday night for North by Midwest. You'll be treated to local rock slingers The 757's, The Magnolias, Little Man, and more! For a show of this magnitude, a modest $10 cover is quite fair. Now, be there! Links The 757's - Website / Myspace The Magnolias - Website / Myspace Little [...]

Take a sample of the new releases this week, and maybe you'll find something you didn't expect to discover. This week's highlights include new records from The Bird and the Bee , Loney Dear , and Cotton Jones (Michael Nau of Page France ). Or maybe you would be interested in something more familiar like Bruce Springsteen's or Franz Ferdinand's latest. [...]

Anybody out there remember the early 90's when bands like Material Issue ruled the world? When Urge Overkill was singing about Sister Havana (my ex-lived across the street from where they filmed the video). I do...and apparently Middle States do as well. Here's this band in the tail end of the first decade of the 21st century and they sound so much like every band from 1992 I had to make sure I wasn't still doing my radio show at UM. Think of Middle States as a comfort food [...]
