Midlake's debut album, Bamnan and Slivercork , has spent the last two years flying well below the radar. Not as quirky as Grandaddy and less pretentious than Radiohead, Midlake gently nudged their way, sonically and alphabetically, between those two bands in my music collection. With the recent unveiling of their new album, The Trials of VanOccupanther , in stores July 25th, Midlake won't be able to avoid the spotlight for much longer. For the most part they've ditched the keyboards replacing them with more guitars, acoustic and electric, as well as more vocals. The resulting sound boldly embraces [...]
MIDLAKE "The Trials Of Van Occupanther" MIDLAKE "Bamnan And Slivercork" NEWSFLASH! Classic rock has infiltrated indie rock. Yes, it's been going on for some time now, even before Karate starting doing Steely Dan inspired imitations. But, now, you can go to your uber snot friend's parties and no longer are they ashamed of a little Fleetwood Mac or Supertramp popping up on the iTunes, rather,
At first I didn't plan on doing a mid-year review list, but then I thought, "what better way to celebrate your July 4th then to read a music list compiled by me". Then, I thought of about a million better ways to celebrate 4th of July, but I'm doing this all the same. Truth be told, this has been a year has been filled with heaps of fantastic releases and even my honorable mention list would give
Six months in the bag, so it's time for a quick retrospective. Check the blue radio.blog for some of the finest tunesmithery from the first half of 2006. Some of the tracks, including offerings from The Strokes, Broken Social Scene and Guillemots, have all been rockin' the Philadelphia headquarters for months now, while more recent cuts from Mojave 3 and Phoenix have managed to become objects of obsession in just a couple weeks' time. There are a few quieter numbers, including an exceptionally pretty song from Midlake that I've also posted for download below. Overall, however, [...]
Of course, since I only had to work a half day today, I put off planning the show until this evening. So this is an incredibly short notice "preview." Still, I'm at least going to at least give you the f ree mp3 of the week : Midlake - " Roscoe " I got a copy of The Trials of Van Occupanther in the mail last week, and I have to say, "Roscoe" has finally grown on me. The song has been on the internet for a [...]

Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. Such is the first principle of existentialism. It is also what is called subjectivity, the name we are labeled with when charges are brought against us. But what do we mean by this, if not that man has a greater dignity than a stone or table? for we mean that man first exists, that is, that man first of all is the being who hurls himself toward a future and who is conscious of imagining himself as being in the future. Man is at the start a plan which is [...]
With the disappointment that was Naperville's Ribfest , I really need to hear some live music outdoors. Evidently the fire marshall stopped allowing people into Ribfest shortly after 5PM yesterday evening. We arrived at about 7PM to see REO Speedwagon (they went on at 8PM) but were turned away along with a few thousand other people. What a joke. In the wake of last night's Ribfest fiasco, I can't wait for Lollapalooza . Here is another batch of tunes for all of you to sample from [...]
